Absolutely. I was at the game. The first half was hard battle as NC State led by 9 at half, 49-40. Then in immediate second half, NC State went on a 15-4 run to grab the 64-44 lead which hurts my heart. Debbie called for a timeout. Whatever happened in that timeout, it jolted the team and they rallied to tie the game at 79 at end of intermission - then again at 98, then again at 108 and at last, Virginia's Tony Cardoza stole the ball to win the game at 123-120 in 3OT. I think that game showed that Staley is brilliant player, Reiss is flashy, Cordoza is fighter but who helped this team? Dena Evans - she was intelligent PG who poured everything into Reiss, Cordoza and Staley to win this 55-minute game.

If DT hadn’t got to it, Burleson just might have. Walton found himself in an NC State Sandwich on that play.

One of the best blockers and players ever! If he had stayed healthy, off drugs etc, he easily would've had several NBA titles and definitely better than Kobe during his time period.

No baller has ever had the hops and height of his jumps. Once when he busted his head coming down because his feet hit the shoulders of his center Tom Burleson, about 7'4". Another time he leaped over the PF on his team enroute to a dunk. The block against Walton. And this is just in COLLEGE!!! A phenomenal player.

Thompson's injury in the regionals came when he flipped over the shoulders of Phil Spence not Tommy Burleson. Spence was "only" 6-9. The dunk was outlawed in those days, but near the end of Thompson's final regular season game in Reynolds Coliseum he took a halfcourt lob with Monte Towe and slammed it in the hoop. The place went nuts. He got T'ed up for it, but NO ONE cared. The crowd in Raleigh had been waiting to see that for three years. David was a superhero and one of the best college players ever.

That travel call was unbelievable. NC State may have been in the Final Four that year if they didn't get screwed. They were capable of beating Puke in the next round (don't think they beat Seton Hall, though).

Probably one of the most heartbreaking calls Ive seen with a bad call. The Pack was gaining momentum and Fire would of hit the 3. NCSU would have pulled out the Victory.

Both of the 'Hill' players were the embodiment of class... the kind of student athletes that Duke once-upon-a-time recruited. Those were the best days to be a Blue Devil fan. Sadly missed

Great game. My Junior year in high school. LOVED Thompson (we Thompsons gotta stick together 😀); had followed him since his Freshman year at NC State, even though he wasn't yet on the varsity. But was a diehard Bruin fan back then, and a bit disappointed at the outcome. Walton later admitted decades later that the Bruins took the 'Pack lightly before this game, because they'd already beaten them by 18 , in December earlier that season at the "neutral site" game in St. Louis. Wooden warned them about taking NC State for granted, but,...,well, we know how it turned out. Thompson and the 'Pack were destined to win the '74 title, considering Thompson survived that vicious fall (worst I've ever seen on a court) against Pittsburgh the week prior. And, I waited a year later to see the Bruins give Wooden his last title. Thompson is my 3rd all-time favorite college player. Walton is #2, and Kareem is my #1. This '74 National semifinal is one of the best basketball games ever played.

Also there was a hustling flopper named Stoddard...( I forgot 1st name) who ended up playing for Baltimore Orioles as pitcher, played on the World Series team that blew 3-1 game lead to Pirates in '79. Both times N.C. State won titles in '74,& '83 they were not favored to win championship goin into the semis.

The only guys I remember to dunk from the foul line in a game was David "Skywalker" Thompson and Clude "The Glide" Drexler. Air time was normal for them.
