The Via Rail 692/693 between Winnipeg and Churchill in Manitoba has a really beautiful chord. That chord is C, D# and A# (C, D sharp and A sharp AKA C, E flat and B flat). This chord means so much to me because of my amazing trip I took to Churchill with some of my closest friends, and the first trip I went on post pandemic and my first time on a train since 2001.

I tried to build this but on the LCD screen I get no readout. any suggestions?
@LIRRTV
@LIRRTV Ай бұрын
Couple of things I would look for first: - Double check that you have solid connections going to the correct pins on the Arduino - are you testing on a solderless breadboard? - Does the LCD display show anything at all? If so try adjusting the contrast using the potentiometer and see if you can read it better. - Are you able to compile/upload the whole sketch to the Arduino?
@danpickle7398
@danpickle7398 Ай бұрын
@@LIRRTV yes I am using a bread board to test first! :) The screen illuminates however turning the pot up and down there is no difference in illumination. The code did say that it completed the upload with no errors
@LIRRTV
@LIRRTV Ай бұрын
Interesting, well it's a good sign that it at least compiles and uploads with no errors. Likely just a hardware issue. I've found that sometimes I needed to hit the reset button on the Mega after I gave it power, maybe give that a try. It's the button right next to the USB port. Are you using an LCD with 16 pins like the tutorial or the other simplified type with less pins?
@danpickle7398
@danpickle7398 Ай бұрын
@LIRRTV I actually have both styles of LCD but just to get it working I am using the 16 pin like in the video. Using another arduino I have verified the lcd works with the hello world code
@LIRRTV
@LIRRTV Ай бұрын
Hm, odd. LCD should be using pins 22, 6, 5, 25, 4, and 26 going back to the Mega. When the screen is illuminated, is it displaying white boxes instead of text or nothing at all? On my previous build attempts if I had something anywhere that was wired incorrectly it would mess with the LCD and the rest of the project, it would be worthwhile to double check all of your connections instead of just what's going to the LCD. If you have it connected to the speaker already, can you hear any buzzing coming from it? If it still isn't working shoot me an email at [email protected] with some pics of your wiring and I can help you out some more.

Russ and I are attempting to build the detector. Your YT video computer screen showed that you compiled it on an ESP32 Dev Module - were you successful? I've tried for 2 days to get the proper libraries or mod the libraries to work on an ESP32. Question: is the SD card an I2C or SPI? That is the only item I'm missing in inventory.
@LIRRTV
@LIRRTV 2 ай бұрын
This code was written specifically for an Arduino Mega 2560, as far as I'm aware it will not work with an ESP32. I've tried to compile to an ESP32 before and the libraries seemed to be incompatible. The dropdown in the section where I explain my code just shows the ESP32 Dev Module because it was the most recent thing I had compiled to on that pc, not what I used for this specific project. In terms of the SD card, I'm just using a SanDisk 4GB Micro SDHC. I believe it's actually the one that came with my Nintendo Switch before I replaced it for a larger one lol

Might attempt this build. Sounds like it would make for an interesting add on to a session. I do have a question about the lcd, why did you choose the more complicated version? The version with the integrated daughter board would have reduced the wire count by using the 5vdc, gnd, scl and sda (also lcd contrast control integrated) instead of all the additional wires?? I don't know programming, so maybe it was easier your way. I'm a hardware guy...lol
@LIRRTV
@LIRRTV 2 ай бұрын
That specific lcd was the only one I had laying around at the time, I realized it was more complicated but didn’t really feel like finding another one lol. Would’ve been the same results either way, I suppose I just gave myself more work instead of spending like 6 bucks on another one. You might be the first person to try the build besides myself - let me know if you go for it! I’m curious to see if I made a good enough tutorial for others to understand. If you have any questions feel free to ask here and I can help you out with whatever you need. Or if you see room for improvement I’m always open to suggestions. Good luck!

Merely an observation, not a criticism, but no rear end marker(s) on the tail end. I also noticed that none of the psgr cars were lighted inside, so possibly a power problem with power not able to reach the cars from the HEP. With 161 in the mix, they may have no viable way (or extension cords long enough) to get hotel load to the train. Since no revenue on board, not a great need to worry about it, I suppose.
@LIRRTV
@LIRRTV 5 ай бұрын
Good eye, I noticed the lack of markers too. After looking again it seems the 4 car set was 5019 + 3 cars, which was the original equipment with 409 on train 627 that failed. I’m assuming 404/161 was the original equipment to be taken back, but was sandwiched between the 409/5019 set…weird
@mtk52983
@mtk52983 2 ай бұрын
@@LIRRTV I think you are correct and there was probably an issue on 5019 preventing it from operating as lead car which was why (no pun intended) they wyed 409.

Well where did you come from? Suddenly a single video about your model railroad about using Arduino supplied controls combined with a NCE DCC System. It sure looks like you are headed to fully automating it's operation. Great first video just Outstanding!!! Are you considering using JMRI software? I've started a system where I intend on fully automating a DCC-EX Command Station starting with JRMI's Decoder Pro and Panel Pro so I can begin to operate my layout. I would love to know your background and possibly compare notes. Once again, That's a Great Start...
