With all the problems LIRR has with the dual mode diesels and their unwillingness to electrify the entire network, I'm surprised they haven't considered running DMUs in their diesel territory. At least on a DMU if you have an engine failure you have extra engines in the consist so you can keep going just with slower acceleration.

LIRR should have kept all their GP38's & MP15's. These DE-30's have been plagued with problems from the very beginning.
