I'd be interested to see how you fit the AAs. May I suggest leaving the leads at different lengths so that you have spacing between the joints. Is there a reason you don't twist the wires altogether before soldering?

Yes, it's a pity Roberts don't provide a correct polarity connector with the radio - then that problem wouldn't arise. Thankfully there are one or two manufacturers of suitable mains adapters with a polarity switch or a polarity reversal plug on Ebay.

Hello friend. Thanks for the video. I'm facing the same problem with this Grundig. Unfortunately mine has a bad battery contact like yours. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Only at the source it didn't present any problems but even so I can't touch it much as it also turns off. Today it doesn't even want to show the access display. Only at the source does it come back to life completely. I don't have the courage to make the same intervention as you. I will send you to a specialist soon. Something curious about this radio's SSB: It tunes amateur radios 1 Khz ahead of time and not at the exact frequency. Example 7.055 Khz catches on 7.054 kHz. It's like this in the 40m, 80m, 20m, 11m and 10m.

My sister bought one of the Fidelity Floret radios around 1963/4 it cost her 3 weeks wages I'm guessing the flap over the tuner is to keep it dry when walking around with it

Ive tried to justify, a reason, to like Roberts radios, because they have a British name with cred. But I just cant get it. They're ugilly, outdated, break a lot, Radio itself, is finished, and it's just cr@,p!😒 I found one in the skip last night, in beautiful condition, the batteries were well gone and leaked a small amount of acid. After struggling with the ethics of salvation...if possible, I decided, its such a well made piece of junk it's gotta be scrapped!😒👎

Cardinal rule No.1: When you dismantle absolutely anything PUT THE SCREWS IN A PLATE before you knock them to the floor and irretrievably lose them. Then you have to replace them with non-original ill-fitting screws like has been done here.

That looks like quite a nicely-made unit for what it is, certainly a lot better than the cheap junk available today although Roberts is still a credible audio company so perhaps not surprising. Spoiled by cheap Chinese components as usual - but then it does look to be from 2006 so needing a minor service at its age isn't surprising really.

If Roberts current owners made a modern day internet DAB+ version of this beauty, I would definitely be willing to pay £200-£229ish for one like this or in the dark blue I've seen these in. Especially if they use the same retro "R" badge and not the incorrect signature logo like on the Rambler BT Stereo model. 👍

Why don't you stop buying PP3 batteries and make a unit that is rechargeable? 9x1.2 volt AAA rechargeable batteries and a simple small charger would do the job. But thanks for the video, you have given me the inspiration to make one for my Roberts radio when my wife is in the garden, cheers Bob in the UK

If it will physically fit, then the short answer is yes, it will 'work'. The long answer has many variables, but essentially the audio IC will have to work harder, will run hotter, and ultimately over time, may stress it to the point of failure. Or, it might be okay... So not a definitive answer. I have done it myself previously, and with no ill-effect.

Hi Paul, it's the Murphy B818. If you look at the Bush TR130 PCB they all seem to have been made by Murphy - MR is etched on them.

Nice looking radio, did Bush ever produce a model with FM? Would sound good with that large loudspeaker. Just got a full set of valves for my Leak through line tuner at Golborne, which is also down the road from me in Manchester. Peter.

The Bush VTR330 is the one that has the FM circuitry. Amazing sound. I was at Golborne, George bought this for me there - he knows I love working on them - worst job in the world on these is changing the tuner cap grommets...

Hi, great video and although I've never done any form of electrical repair I going to have a go at replacing that micro chip thingy tda7231🙄. Can you explain what the other tool does ( not the soldering iron) but the clipper things. Are you loosening the solder and clipping the leg bits off the chip to release it. Then does the solder wick clean up the old solder on the circuit board thingy 😂. Any further help would be great and where's best to get the chip from👍 cheers and thanks so far😊

You did? Most of the ones I tackled were audio IC's and / or voltage regulators, a couple with screen issues, one simple one with a dead chargepak - oh, and lots of cleaning the horrible outer sticky cases
