Yeah -Honestly, I never liked Peter. I just don’t. He acts douchy…. You know, like a douche bag. He thinks too highly of himself or he has to keep with the Jones and imagine controlled. He strikes me as shallow. Something Jim of Back Fire and even at times Gavin of Ultimate Reloader can both be guilty of.

This is all so perfectly timed because a video by Erik Cortina just came out called ethical hunting challenge. Go watch it. Basically shows all these top shots can't hit a 5 inch target at 500 yards with as much time as they choose, using any rig of their choice. There was one hit out of the lot. Who gives a shit about your 300 PRC being better than the ought-six if you can't hit your target at 500 anyway.

i elk hunt out west every year for the last 24 years, sometimes multiple elk. the furthest shot i've taken was 608 yards. most have been 100-250 yards. the prc to really really take advantage of it's design over a 300 win mag requires a longer action so they're not really compareable but the prc offers nothing over the 300 win mag in hunting situations. i love the creedmoor but within 400 yards it kills elk better than the creedmoor though the creedmoor works well if you pick the bullets well. if you want reasonable recoil and the bullet mass to shoot anything, the 30.06 does it all. no need for a brake, and i wouldn't really recommend a non braked 300 prc in a hunting weight rifle for really anyone to shoot.

I forgot to mention: the '06 has about the most recoil most people can withstand over long range sessions and still be able to shoot accurately in a hunting-weight rifle, say around 8 to 9 pounds with a good scope. The Ackley Improved version is probably at the upper margin of tolerable recoil in a hunting rifle for most shooters, especially casual shooters. As to its long range capabilities, it is easily capable of shots over 1100 meters, or in excess of 1200 yards with 180, 190 and 200 grain spitzer boattail projectiles, and can shoot well inside 0.7 moa with the right powders and projectiles. Both Ruger and Remington have/do produce long range hunting rifles which have heavy Sporter/light Varmint barrels in -06 that will go inside 1/2 inch with good loads. Remington's Longrange 700 is 8 1/2 lbs, has a 26" barrel, an HS Precision stock and a Timney trigger from the factory. With a good variable scope of sufficient power, it would still weigh around 9 1/2 lbs and would easily class as a long range rifle in 30-06. The extra two inches in barrel length would give a 60 to 70 fps velocity increase over factory velocities, and if you hand load, 180 grain loads in 'o6 can be pushed past 2800 fps easily and safely with some of the newer powders. Just look at the Hornaday and Federal Superformance type loads or Buffalo Bore's loads for the cartridge. Finally, the '06 was a long range cartridge before any of the long range crowd today or their fathers were even born. Hathcock used it almost exclusively for sniping in Vietnam, and so did a number of other snipers. It easily ranged to 1,000 yards and beyond then, and it does so now. It isn't the newest and bestest flavor of the week, but it is reliable, accurate, effective, capable and far more available, not to mention less expensive in all the factory loadings (I reload all of mine) than, say, the 6.5 PRC or the 300 PRC, the latter if which has significantly more recoil, and is a ballistic twin of the 300 Winchester Magnum, another cartridge that I shoot whose ammunition is more readily available, has just as much reach as the PRC, and costs about half as much.

Thanks. I've been shooting a 30-06 for over 55 years, and I find it to be a fine cartridge in the right rifle when used with the right scope. I also own and shoot the .308 win, 300 Win Mag, 25-06, 35 Whelen and a couple of other calibers. All of them will easily reach out as far as I want to shoot game, and the .35's will kill pretty much anything at any distance any of the 'flavor of the week' cartridges will but with considerable more authority. I shoot a Sierra 225 Gameking or a 250grain Speer Hotcor at a nominal 2730fps or 2700fps respectively in them and have shot both loads in practice well beyond 800 yards accurately. I did get William Trotter to put muzzle brakes on both 35's and both 300wm's, though. They needed them with heavy bullets and loads.

He does have tunnel vision, but there is a 'new and improved' 30-06 out there, its just that it was created back in the 1920's I think. It is the P.O. Ackley Improved 40degree shoulder 30-06. It leaves the neck length alone but changes the shoulder angle to 40 degrees and straightens the body of the cartridge, giving the round another 100 to 150 fps in velocity. As to the shape of the '06, it had the taper and shoulder angle for reliable feeding and(more importantly) extraction under combat conditions. That's why John Browning kept the same dimensions when he scaled it up to the .50 caliber Mg round. That's also why the older dangerous game rifles had tapered cartridges. A dangerous game cartridge or a combat cartridge had to both feed and extract reliably every time or you got stomped, gored or shot when it didn't.

In 1970 a 10 year old boy walked into the kitchen when his father said “come in here boy, I want to show you something” and as I rounded the corner, my father handed me a sporterized 30-06 1917 Enfield with a 3X (El Paso) Weaver scope on it. I was very excited to say the least. I could barely hold the thing up… but that did not matter. 7 days later, I took my first deer… a fork horn black tail buck and that started it all. I gave that rifle to my youngest grandson who will be one year old this 9-11-24… it will wait on him and my father kept the same $6.12 box of Sierra 168 grain bullets he taught me how to load for my first deer… inside the box… a note… “Raymond’s first deer” and 16 remaining unloaded bullets. So I loaded them and placed the note from my father inside for my grandson. The 30-06 will and always be a round that will never let you down if you do your part. I am a gunsmith and have built “God know how many” different chambering over the years and when a new shooter asks me “what caliber I recommend?” 30-06 rolls out “like water off a ducks back”. You can buy ammo ANYPLACE (for now) and “it kills bugs dead”. I do shoot long range, but… that is not real hunting… getting close enough to see the moisture on the nose of your quarry is hunting… thank you for your video sir.

71+ year old FUD here. I was laughing all the way through that guy’s Hornady testimonial. The worst was his absolute lack of knowledge about the 6.5x55. Even Ryan on the Vortex Nation pod cast stated same as what I say is that the hand loaded 6.5x55 will leave the 6.5 Creedmoor in the dust. It can be done safely with the Carl Gustaf M94/96/38 actions or the Husqvarna actions. Both are plenty strong. With those long actions you can seat the bullets farther out to take full advantage of the Swede’s larger case capacity. Also the twist rate on those rifles can handle those longer, heavier, high BC bullets. Depending on which model and barrel length the twist rates were between 7.5 and 8.5/1. I’ve stated before when other so-called influencers posting from their mother’s basement asserted that the 30-06 was no longer relevant, that the notion was purely ludicrous. It is still ludicrous. I don’t currently own a 30-06 but I do own a 300 H&H that I can load up or down with the appropriate bullet depending on my needs. If you happen to go to Africa and need ammunition you’re still going to find 300 H&H, 300 Win Mag, 30-06, 308 Winchester, 7x57 and even 6.5x55 in stock at gun stores. I’m sorry but ethical hunting is the distance to where the shooter is less than a 100% hit rate on a 8” paper plate. If you’re not able to hit the plate EVERY time, you’re shooting past your own ethical limit! Most game has a 6-8” heart/lung spread; sure, you can hit the deer but if you missed the h/l shot, you’ve just wounded the deer and then watched it dart over the ridge! A gut shot animal will die, sooner or later, but you might not be able to recover it! I’ve used 30-06, 270Win, 7RemMag, 300H&H, and currently use a 7x57. I mentally draw a 250yd limit for my shots. Not because any of these cartridges aren’t lethal to much longer distances, but I’ve helped a number of people track deer they shot at insane distances, only to see them jump and run away! The rifle, ammo, scope, and even the hunter may be perfect on paper out to 500, 600, or even more but that’s paper! From the time the bullet exits the muzzle, until it reaches the deer, the deer can and sometimes does move… missed, nicked, or gut shot! The 30-06 and the rest of these rounds are all lethal well past ethical distances but my problem with the new breed of long distance hunting rounds is that many people believe that the bullets are magical and they’ll take ridiculously long shots, way past their ability level, and that’s why I love classic cartridges like the 30-06, and my 7x57, they are perfect for ethical hunting. Deer and elk are not paper targets; a less than ideal shot is unacceptable, period!

*Sticking to .30 caliber....Actually, the answer is a resounding NO. I have nothing against the 30-06, I just have no use for it...Almost everything the 30-06 can do, the .308 can do cheaper and is inherently more accurate, whatever the .308 can't do, the 300 Winchester can do better than the 30-06 with the exact same bullets and the same powder charge. For Us reloaders, 30-06 Brass has also gotten prohibitively expensive and due to the pressure the '06 creates, it's notoriously hard on brass. With proper resizing protocols, the 308 & the 300 Win are both easy on brass...Keep in mind, the US Military abandoned the 30-06. for a reason*

These days, to almost all of us, with the price of components skyrocketing, every grain of powder matters. To avoid the detonation monster, even at minimal lodes, the 06 requires somewhere around 20%-30% more powder (predicated on the load you're working with) than the .308 (73 grains vs. 49 grains-. (approximate & respective) and up to the180 grain bullet, provides almost zero advantage over the .308. The 300 Win on the other hand, can handle everything the 06 can handle +, and has the advantage of a substantial increase in velocity & range over the 06 in all load incarnations...Which is exactly why, the 300 Win is the US Sniper's Team COC. High BC bullets at high velocity are absolutely lethal due to the high SD they usually come with...The Springfield has disadvantage of being stuck in the middle without offering any real advantage over either. Some of the "factory" guns shooting the newer cartridges will cost the same, or more, as customizing your 30-06 or 270 Win with tighter twist and longer throated barrel, to shoot the heavy sleeks, it will still shoot factory ammo that costs MUCH less than factory loadings of the new kids on the block. I would ALWAYS recommend .308 Win, 270 Win., and 30-06, for general use, and 243 Win or 6.5 Creed as whitetail and smaller. People getting started should buy what has the broadest available ammo and platform choices. Your point of the '06's beautifully long neck makes it great for loading the long heavies, but not bad for the short pills. Also, 308 and 30-06 will have quantities of surplus ammo and brass that will make them viable, even if loading for "daughter" cartridges, like 7-08, 25-06, 358 Win or 35 Whelen to name a few, that the PRCs will NEVER see. Piet isn't "wrong", but he isn't correct. If someone is wanting to get into PRC, PRC cartridges may be the ticket, but the do-alls of 30-06 Sprg or .308 Win, or 270 Win are 100% what should be recommended to someone testing the water as a hunter. One more point, then I am done for now... Does Hornady offer any "Custom Lite" ammo for their PRC cartridges? They do for 30-06 & 308 Win.🤨

I feel the 7x57mm when loaded into a modern rifle with modern components at modern pressures it definitely competes with it's modern counterparts. If you live on the east coast you hunt mainly deer, feral hogs and black bear. A cartridge like the 7x57mm is where it's at. In reality it is all you really need. It does have the potential to keep up with the 6.5 Creedmoor when loaded with modern high bc bullets. It's definitely a superior hunting cartridge. It is the 7mm-08 ballistic twin. However you can squeeze better performance out of it with heavier for caliber higher bc bullets. That longer neck gives it more case capacity for bigger bullets. I feel the biggest reason it fell out of favor in the main stream is because it doesn't fit in a short action and factory ammunition is loaded to lawyer specifications. It's a handloaders cartridge. For a lot of people who don't hand load, it's a disadvantage. It's rarely chambered in factory rifles. If it is, they are considered special editions. The only manufacturers that still manufacture 7x57mm rifles are custom gun makers such as Rigby, Griffin and Howe, Mauser in their 98 model, and Park West arms. These new production 7x57mm rifles run you north of $10k! If you catch a Ruger, Remington or Winchester that's used you'll be paying anywhere from $900 to $4000 used. Good luck trying to find a Zastava Mauser. If you find one they retail for over $1000. If you like the 7x57mm your best option is to rebarrel an existing modern rifle. A good gunsmith who installs a premium barrel on your rifle is going to run you north of 2 grand. The 7x57mm is not worth the cost to most people even though said cartridge has legendary performance on game and many gun writers sing it's praises. It's more economical to get a 7mm-08 . I also feel the 7x57mm should be more popular than what it is. It just fell out of favor. People running 93 Mausers are the reason for lawyer specifications which did the cartridge a disservice. I have an old Sears JC Higgins rifle built with a Husqvarna 1640 commercial action in .270 win. The barrel is shot out. It doesn't produce desirable accuracy. So, I am having it rebarreled to 7x57mm. It's an expensive project. It should be ready by the 2024 deer season.

I think those “influencer” types get caught up in marketing hype and just regurgitate things without analyzing what they’re really saying. Thanks for always providing great analysis with objective data. And I appreciate that you have your opinions too but they’re experience and analytical driven and if you do apply feelings to your opinions you clearly state when they’re subjective. And that’s fine too! Great work as always!

Isn't 3006 made in Ackley improved?maybe 3006 should be loaded like 45 70 at different pressure levels ,like garland has always been but take it up to 65000 psi like 308 in modern rifles

OMG. It doesnt have to be this complicated or expensive to clean brass guys!!! Lemon juice, dish soap, hot water, and an old peanut butter jar will work just as well.

I have a 6.5 creedmoor and like it, but the 260 has 50 per second faster in factory ammo. The AI get you up in 2800 ft at the muzzle. I have heard good things about the 260 AI.

I like the old stuff, I like the new stuff. I hunt with a .375 Winchester lever action. Im out west and its not that hard to get within open sight distances on most animals and most situations, which renders every advantage of the Creedmoor, PRC, XYZ magnum useless. These new cartridges do get people interested in firearms and maybe re spark something in guys that we’re into guns but lost interest in it which is never a bad thing. I don’t think there’s any cartridge that deserves to be put down, new or old. It’s just a brass casing, powder and a bullet.

When ever I hear talk about a cartridge, it in most cases, it is compared to the 30-06. (the old standard) I hear to much hype on what cartridge is better. Application determines that. Is a .308 better than a 22lr if I am only hunting squarrels? My opinion is get what is best suited for what you are hunting, keeping in mind the availability of ammo. The 30-06 isn't going away for a long, long time.
