Tbh, even though I play with tech full-time for my job, even I have steered away from Home Assistant due to it's lack of easability, setup, etc. I look forward to seeing what they do in the future

Would I want an "AI" box in my home today? Not a chance. Our only alternative is Nvidia, who unchecked raises prices, undercuts on RAM and is just generally super expensive and greedy. In the future where there is more competition, we would likely see better prices. But even if that was not an issue, today's "AI" models are just too bad at their job. All local models I've tried just don't listen. I would have to REALLY see a model that can actually listen and do things properly before I change my mind. But my bet is that we're still a few years away from that. We need more VRAM on the GPU and Nvidia is cheaping out.

It absolutely looks nice but what I don’t understand is that you need dashboards all over the place when you call your home a smart home and have to push buttons. That worked 50 years ago as well. My home is smart but only have to push a dashboard for an override of one of the many automated scenes.

I caught the home automation bug when I build my house in 98 and installed a Stargate w/ lots of X-10, which I'm slowly moving away from. I've gone down the HomeSeer path before Home Assistant was created, as HS had a Stargate plugin. I've since upgraded to HS4, but now they're starting to charge an annual fee for some connectivity. Because I abhor paying fees, I've now started researching Home Assistant again as I've had my eye on it for years now but just not made the jump. I've a fair investment into Z-Wave equipment, so this video really piqued my interest, as I don't really want to replace stuff with Zigbee.

From 150 to 600 is quite steep just to add local AI. Let's wait for the first results here on youtube! By the way, amazing that the guys come all the way to Austin from Europe and after the conference they continue doing actual hardware testing in the hotel. Commitment!

I'm all for a local AI box, as long as it can do the sort of things my Google Home / Alexa can do and is extensible, because both Google & Alexa have all sorts of problems and limitations. Google isn't even consistent for me - "Play music on <roomName> Sonos" does exactly what I want (play music I like from KZbin Music) when I say it to the device in the kitchen, but if I say the same to the device in the bedroom or office it plays the track "Music" by Madonna in one case, or some random rubbish in the other. At least it's consistent in it's inconsistency, I suppose. And I can't even get Alexa to play music on my Sonos system. I would pay a fortune for a locally running AI that not only keeps my data private, but that I can also tweak to behave as I want.

Sounds like Home Assistant are worried about the sorts of things that Homey has been honing in on for a while now. It's kind of mental that a company that's been around for ten years hasn't figured out that the UI is king.

I already have an AI box in my home as I have a RTX 3060 12GB in my Unraid server that also run my Home Assistant. But yeah, gimme a more efficient true AI box and I spend $1000 easily.

Hi ! Thanks for this sneak peak from the Z-Wave event. 3 years ago I built a small smart home solution for my apartment using openHAB 2.0. At this moment I thought it was the best solution mainly for its very large panel or bindings. You seem very into HomeAssistant. I am planning to start from scratch again for my house. Any thought about HomeAssistant vs current version of openHAB 4 ? Thanks and keep up the good work ! Greetings from Little Belgium 👋

i was using Zwave and HA as my primary setup for smart home 9 years ago. HA has really come a long way. i ditched zwave for wifi and zigbee because it was just too unaffordable and less choices. I hope zwave will have more devices and lower their cost.

I would MUCH PERFERE Nvidia local Ai over any google/apple or other stealing and selling my data without my concent. Expensive yes but might be worth it. Google has no place in my home! Yes my phone is Android but I've blocked everything from google except google maps, and even just there it's a lot of location data even without maps running i can see my history where I've been 😅😳

Currently running Tuya and it works great but lacking a lot of functions that i want. Much rather have China tracking me than USA 😂 since they won't share data with my country or other i don't want. Not that Tuya seems to track anything i do, not asking for permissions for everything like google

I have Homey and HA - Automation in HA .. not so friendly as Advanced Flows in Homey. Yes I can add Node Red, but "Advanced Flow/Node Red" should be core way to do automation in HA and not an HACS add on.

Isn’t a LLM too powerful for this purpose?? I have been thinking about this and planning a new build which has full smart switches and sensors, but at the beginning no automations… using the home would ‘teach’ the system and have it ‘suggest’ the automations that make most sense for the way you live your life! I suspect the NVidia LLm unless it is a cut down system ‘just’ for Home Automation is the reason it is so expensive!

Depending on the AI task you want to run they can totally work on a Pi. An LLM, no, but lots of classification, regression, and optimization models work great on small embedded platforms.

do they know how much smart home people spent on philips hue stuff alone? i don't think they'll find this all that much for running AI at home (although i do find it too expensive for now and would rather just don't run locally)

HomeAssistant for my wired KNX Smart Home is great. (But that‘s rather down to KNX, than just HA. Go check it out. There is nothing better for a new build or rewire than this wolrd wide standard with >9000 devices from over 500 vendors.)
@maxking3
@maxking3 8 сағат бұрын
The future of smart homes is 100% clear: One day, sensors (Pushbuttons, Presence, Thermostats, etc) will be digitally wired, so they can be feature rich, reliable and never need a battery change. For better maintenance, scale and thermal reasons, actuators should no longer be put into the wall outlet, but into a central cabinet. That‘s also clear. That will require a world wide standard for wired smart home components, idealley one, that can be deployed cheaper and more flexible than Ethernet, where you can simply daisy chain the devices and don‘t need to worry about security. Finally, the components should be intelligent enough to even work when Home Assistant or whatever server you use is down. An while we are at it, they should work with multiple servers at the same time, so that you can control the hoise with a combination of HomeAssistant, ioBroker and maybe even some commercial solutions. Oh, hang on. This already exists. It is called KNX and for some reason is totally ignored by the retrofit-consumer nerds, even though it is hands down the best solution for new builds and rewires. Quite simply, if you have not played around with KNX, you should not consider yourself a smart home insider… If you are a KNX Pro, then you can even make a hotel, a train station or an office park „smart“. (Building Automation is the term there) So there is your career path…

Hi, Great information:) I'm currently building a house, and it's in the rough construction stage. What minimal work should I do to prepare the building for smart solutions? Does every device need access to grid power? How can I optimally plan the layout of electrical cables in the rooms?
@indiggioman
@indiggioman 2 сағат бұрын
I would suggest some central location for WiFi router and home automation computer for fanning out radio signals to all parts of the house. Typically these pieces of equipment end up maybe in a basement or attic, so the spread of the signal isn't optimal for coverage. Cabling (Ethernet, video, power) isn't as important as it was before the advent of wireless technologies. Now most devices can be button battery powered, which is kind of a pain, but beats having to deal with powering stuff. Some devices are now using PoE, so you may want to think about that. Otherwise, for certain devices having an AC outlet nearby what you think you might want to automate might be a good idea.

I have a box (not super powerful... intel 10700k, nvidia 3070, 16gb ddr4) dedicated to AI/ML. ubuntu server bare metal. docker (current running codeprojectAI), also have python, pytorch and a bunch of other stuff (like fast.ai). I'm probably not "normal" but having a piece of HW that has some fairly 'standard' AI/ML software that OTHER things can plug into... seems... uhhh... like the future.

Yeah, they definitely need to overhaul Lovelace dashboard when it comes to theming. More settings (like card transparency or tap to open a stack that pops up a room or entity grouping) via UI rather than editing the theme.yaml or getting specialty entities/cards from HACS. Also? Significantly easier way to change wallpapers via UI too!
