Many things, even from the first two minutes, would literally take longer than actually making a minimal effort, like reaching for a light switch or using keys on a lock instead of waiting for the automation to recognise his face or that he'd entered a room and process it. It's nowhere near more convenient to set it all up and then deal with the bugs and software and hardware issues. There are many more low tech options that could save a few seconds, like a retractable key chain or a simple sensor light for those two examples.

I’m slowly getting into automations. I only really have two or three. Our house is slab on grade so it takes forever for the hot water to get from the garage to the other side of the house, especially in the winter. So we installed a hot water circulator that unfortunately has one of those old time dial timers. But I hooked it up to a smart plug and have it set to turn on in the morning on days we go to work. I also have it set to turn on after a certain amount of time when I go for a run so I have instant hot water when I get home. I also have a setup that turns it on when I leave the gym and go home. Unfortunately the gas station and drug store are in the same area so it turns on the pump sometimes. I need to figure out how to be a little more precise in the location. And like you I have a smart switch that turns on our outside lights at sunset and off at sunrise

Another automation I want to figure out is how to have the bathroom exhaust fan turn off when humidity levels have dropped back to normal after a shower. I saw someone mention it in a video but I’ve never been able to find that video again to ask them how they did it
@Renegade605Ай бұрын
@@tatts4life838use a home assistant helper to make a derivative sensor for humidity. If %/min change is a large positive number, the humidity just spiked (the shower is on). When the %/min is a large negative number, the humidity tanked (ie. the door was opened). Wait for the %/min to get back to around 0, and it's stabilized and you can now turn off the fan.

Have you considered getting the presence switches from Inovelli to get rid of the plugged in sensors?
@Saturn2888Ай бұрын
I have! After watching Linus's recent video, I realized, they look gaudy, but they would look like part of the house as ugly wall switches.
@dansilchuk27 күн бұрын
@ what switch type do you prefer? In my opinion they are some of the best looking smart switches.
@Saturn288827 күн бұрын
@@dansilchuk I dunno what I was saying looked gaudy 😆. I think I meant my buttons and Everything Presence Lites. They stand out, but they could be completely hidden as Inovelli switches! I bought my first Inovelli switches as Zigbee fan controllers. That's a project I've been trying to do for years. Once I figured out you could control them from the switch, I bought some and found out light dimmers aren't the same as fan dimmers, so I bought the Inovelli to replace my Enbrighten (JASCO). I also bought some in-fan units too as the upstairs fans aren't all on light switches! Point is, I agree that having switches in the walls with motion or presence detection makes them blend in with the house. I don't like light switches in general because they mess up my smart lights, but I could solve that with Inovelli switches as they can turn off the relay in software! Lastly, I have all these IKEA Rodrent switches that work SUPER well. I can put them wherever I want on any wall, and they're also magnetic. I just don't like that they look like they don't belong even though I can place them in spots that make sense unlike my current light switch panels (they're so complicated in this house!). I'm torn at the moment for what I wanna do if I move. In this house? Oh for sure, I'm gonna put a few Inovellis in so my kids and guests don't keep resetting with my smart lights if I move. But it's not an affordable way of doing it. Switch covers make way more sense cost-wise, and that's what I've gone with for now. So really, I don't have a preferred switch. I'd love to explore more options. I know a lot of people use Lutron, but I really don't like proprietary systems no matter how good the brand is.

That is an insane level of automation!

Ha ha. That look at the end. I think that's my permanent face when it comes to chores at home (and picking up the endless amounts of toys that seem to distribute themselves all over the house thanks to my children) 😂

Nursing homes should explore implementing this automation for the elderly and people with disabilities.

I use the aqara leak sensor in occupancy mode with a preassure sensor for automations for when I am in or out of bed, for the alarm I use hassalarm that when It sees the next set alarm it turns on the switch to run the alarm automation which handles my hue lamps turning on based on what time in the morning it is. I have the lamps and led strip set to use circadian lighting to automate temperature and brightness. The led strip I use in the bathroom for saving turning on the main light since it has an exhaust fan tied to it which is using the wasp in a box blueprint to keep it on as long as occupancy is detected, a dehumidifier via a matter based power strip is tied to my switchbot 2 hubs humidity sensor to help reduce that and it's also controlling the exaust fan to tell it to turn on with a 30min timer once its above a threshold that matches when I am in the shower. I just got and installed the airgradient one airquality sensor so I can also monitor my co2 levels in my home and have it automate putting my ac in fan mode to promote airflow and remind me to open a window. As for a doorbell I use a shelly button as my doorbell button and have an automtion to turn on the monitor on my rack where I have my camera feeds show and it also takes a snapshot to display in a persistent notification to show who is/was at the door on the phone at the time, I even use tasker to automate putting the phone out of silent mode, play the sound file for the trigger word in the notification title then put it back in silent. As for smart plugs I have one setup like a wattman to monitor my pc wattage usage and I have a wake on lan automation that runs after 9s after the plug is turned on heh. A lot of my controls I also have mapped to my streamdeck xl when I am at my desk for quick access and everything else is your standard motion/door sensor triggers and I have one that automates power cycling my NBN modem then restarts my router after 5min of the internet being down.

is it normal in the us to waste so much water waiting for it to get warm ?

Hopefully smart homes don't make us dumber.

Well, considering the fact, that we actually call it a "smart home" when it's in fact just voice commands or routines, I'd say: too late.

Your videos give me inspiration… I’m starting to get into the rabbit hole for smart lighting, trying to figure out what hub/bulbs/switches to go with… I think I remember you have videos here and there where you say which ones you like I think Philips hue bridge but go with ikea bulbs…the switches though are confusing … what I really want to automate are the outdoor lights Phoenix Suns!

Now, this is a proper automation.

Are you using any custom written scripts for the automation? For instance the activation of the under table fan if your laptop camera is on? Or is that all through some interlacing of the smart device’s interface? Also the one automation you missed is self watering the plant based on the soil moisture level. You can actually design that yourself with a microcontroller and a small pump in under $50 and it requires less than 20 lines of code.

Reed one thing to help you get enough sleep and be able to wake up on time. Is by going to talk to your doctor and get a sleep apnea test. If you're having a hard time waking up in the morning like I do sometimes it's probably because you have sleep apnea and you don't know it yet. So talk to your doctor and get tested.
