Nice video! I've been told that a lake local to me holds an 18lb pike so I will have to try and catch it. I like to fish for carp but the colder temps make that quite a slow process with low expectations of catching. It's nice to see someone using circle hooks. I've had great experience with them for catfish in Thailand (2008ish) and sharks in Florida (2013) many years ago. I use them here for pike with dead baits and on lures. (Regarding Thailand. People used to fish in the margins for huge catfish. Often they'd miss the fish. There'd be a huge commotion (a massive bow wave) and the fish would be gone before they even knew to strike. Well that was when I used a circle hook. I'd just tighten up and hook up every time! It was fantastic.) Well I plan on taking my 6yo daughter Jessica with me and hopefully she gets to see her first pike! Keep up the great content!

Please keep promoting this . Trebles cause so many unhooking problems and often pike deaths . My biggest hate is the massive trebles on these fashionable huge lures that often lodge in eye sockets and cause tissue damage when unhooking. Great video .

@thomashill6633 I've seen people use this with a ledger, however I just use float rigs that way I can tell exactly when I have pick up and hit the fish straight away.

I've been using circles for my Pike and Zander fishing for nine years now. I'd never go back to trebles. I used to use Mustad 39951 pattern, but since last season Eagle Claw L702G circles have become my firm favourites.

I've been using circle hooks for Pike and Zander for nine years now and would never go back to trebles. In fact, I like circles so much that these days I even use Eagle Claw L702G circles in sizes 12/14 with sweetcorn/maggots for Roach and Rudd with very good results.

Just found your channel and subscribed. Enjoying your pike fishing videos. I’m going to do some more pike fishing this winter and looking to start using circle hooks. I’ve had one trip already, but missed the fish, think I hit it a bit early! How long do you wait before you wind into it? Would be good to show it in one of your videos, from bite to strike! Keep up the good work 👍🎣

I really welcome this circle hook development as I've fished for pike on and off for 40 years, but never liked using trebles. The loop at the hook end of the rig is interesting though - I'll have to try that. Thanks for the info.

Great video and thanks for the info about your favourite hooks. Can I please ask what the hooklength material is please? I like the way you can tie a loop in the end of it and then loop on the hook. Do you think the angle created by coming out of the back of the eye helps hooking efficiency?

What hooklength material do you use that you can knot into a loop please. And what knot do you use to tie the loop? I like the way you can simply loop the hook on with the trace coming out of the back of the hook for better hooking I guess.

Are C hooks an effective tool for conserving marine and freshwater recreational catch-and-release fisheries? May 2004 Aquatic Conservation Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems 14(3):299 - 326 Authors: Steven Cooke Carleton University Abstract Circle hooks have rapidly become popular among recreational anglers, based largely on the assumption that their use aids in the conservation of fisheries resources by reducing gut hooking, and hence mortality. In addition, circle hooks are intended to facilitate jaw hooking. Unfortunately, these assumptions have been perpetuated by anecdotal reports with very little rigorous scientific information to support these assertions. A number of recently published, forthcoming, and grey literature reports provide an opportunity to review briefly and synthesize research conducted on circle hooks. We surveyed literature databases and also used questionnaires to solicit information from unpublished or in‐progress circle hook research. Although among studies the results have been quite disparate, overall the mortality rates were consistently lower for circle hooks than J‐style hooks. In addition, circle hooks were more frequently hooked in the jaw, and less frequently hooked in the gut than conventional hook types. There is no doubt that in some marine fisheries, such as tuna, billfish, and striped bass, capture efficiency remains high and injury and mortality rates are drastically reduced. However, in other species (e.g. bluegill), injury can actually be more severe from circle hooks relative to some other hook types. In other species, such as largemouth bass, circle hooks have minimal conservation benefit, but have reduced capture efficiency relative to conventional hook designs. Factors such as hook size, fishing style, fish feeding mode, and mouth morphology all appear to affect the effectiveness of circle hooks. For these reasons, it is difficult to promote the adoption of the use of circle hooks as a panacea for all fish and fisheries. Instead, we recommend that management agencies focus on recommending circle hooks only for instances for which appropriate scientific data exist. The recent interest in circle hooks has been beneficial for stimulating interest and research on the role of hook designs in reducing hooking‐related injury and mortality. We encourage tackle manufacturers to continue to develop new hook designs that have the potential to provide conservation benefit to caught and released fish. This paper provides direction to management agencies and outdoor media for disseminating responsible information to anglers regarding the application of circle hooks for conserving fisheries resources. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Above is a research article I found re. Circle hooks... it seems to me the jury is still out on efficacy ... The article was found on Researchgate dot net... Unfortunately YT wont allow me to include the link but the above extract gives the gist of it... BTW, I was unable to break it up into paragraphs after the cut & paste either for some reason so sorry for the wall of text.. 🙄 Also, I remember reading an article which said there is "some evidence" that circle hooks propensity to virtually alway scissor-hook may in fact be damaging to the jaw-joint of a fish during an aggressive fight.... make of that what you will, we deffo need more proper scientific research though... As an aside, I notice a lot of YT anglers using circles seem to have lower hook-up rates... Thanks for the vid Mikey !! 😎👍☘️🍻
