It didn't strike me on first listen, but it's true. Coming from Steve Perry (and his band), I dare to hope that it's the result of a writing clumsiness and that he doesn't embody _“the evil of the night”_ he denounces around 2:00. Otherwise, the message of the chorus would apply even more to him than to the young woman: _"Stop yourself before you fall, stop before you lose it all. Stop yourself before you start, don't look back, don't lose heart"..._

The injunction not to turn around _“Don't look back, don't lose heart”,_ the fact that the video was filmed in a desert ruin... Could this not be a reference to the myth of Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt in the Book of Genesis? Given that in the band, at least guitarist Lincoln Brewster was/is indeed a committed Christian, I figure it's not impossible that this was one of their deliberate references... What do you think of it?

I remember the first time I heard this. I thought Journey had released some new music with Perry. Love of Strange Medicine, is an incredible album. Some of Steve Perry's best work since leaving Journey. Still one of my all-time favorites.

I agree with you. It's worth noting that even though Steve Perry had forced Journey into dormancy for several years, _For the Love of Strange Medicine_ was a springboard for a reunion with the band in 1995 and the release of _Trial by Fire_ the following year, before their regrettable definitive “divorce”. At the end of this solo album, Steve addressed the band with an apology song written with Tim Miner, _"Anyway",_ and here's what he said about it in a 2011 interview with Andrew McNeice (Melodic Rock): _"We were brothers 'til the very end. You can't become successful in such an endeavor like becoming a world-known rock band unless you really band together (which is where the term “band” comes from), unless you band together like war buddies and you're absolutely brothers 'til the end. Though you have your moments and you hate each other, you're joined at the hip because you have a mission. And we had that. We had that spark. We had that goalpost in our hearts, all of us. And it truly was a fire that burned inside us all. And that song was my homage to them... and I don't think any of the Journey members ever heard it to be honest with you."_

Is this the earliest video of Lincoln? First time I saw him was when he had short hair and a LONG Mohawk after his Christian rock album, the one with Everlasting Love on it. An album later, he and his band actually played at our church in Lake Elmo, MN. So talented, and humble. A paraphrased quote: “the people that hear the guitar work on my album are kinda missing the point”.

Presumably, yes (during these same studio sessions around 1994, they had at least also recorded _I Am_ and _Listen to Your Heart_ from the same album, but unfortunately I've never found the full music videos on KZbin). That same year, Lincoln and his wife Laura got married, before he embarked on a North American tour to support this "For the Love of Strange Medicine" album. In the Journey Force's last newsletter (1993), Steve Perry tells his friends Lora Beard and Cyndy Poon about their meeting: Lora: _How about introducing the guys who played on your record?_ Steve: [...] _I found Lincoln Brewster, the guitar player, through Randy Jackson_ [Steve's friend, whom he recruited as bassist on Journey's latest album at the time, "Raised on Radio"]. _Randy is now the main West Coast cheese for Sony Music. He knew I had been looking for a guitar player for a long time. There were so many people in this town that could play a lot of chops but they really had no feel. The more I looked, the more disappointing it felt. There wasn't a whole lot of heart in their playing. Randy called and said he was given this tape a kid had made in his home studio. The songs were unfinished, but they stood on their own; they were so pretty. I was standing here in this room listening to the tape and I could feel that there was something behind his playing. There was soul there. I called him and we talked for a long time. He was living at home with his mom at the time._ Lora: _He must have had a major freak out when you called him out of the blue._ Steve: (laughs) _Yeah, I guess. I don't think about things like that sometimes. Anyway, he came to Los Angeles and that was the beginning of me, Paul_ [Taylor, Winger's keyboardist/guitarist] _and Lincoln hanging out and jamming._ [...] _Paul, Linc and I were at a rehearsal place here in Los Angeles and we were just jamming and having a lot of fun. We were thinking we might put something together, but nothing was for sure..._

Thank you for your feedback, I myself find the lyrics at least questionable. I dare to hope it's the result of a writing clumsiness and that Steve doesn't embody _“the evil of the night”_ he denounces around 2:00. Otherwise, the chorus message would apply even more to him than to the young woman: _"Stop yourself before you fall, stop before you lose it all. Stop yourself before you start, don't look back, don't lose heart"..._ To my knowledge, here's the only explanation Steve Perry gave for this song: _“The city is a magnet, and kids gravitate toward it because they can finally leave the nest. The only problem is sometimes you can get lost on the streets, and when young people get lost on the streets they sometimes don't get back. That's what this song is about.”_ (Los Angeles Daily News, 1994).

Thanks to Velizar (Vel_0000) who merged the full video for us! And here's an extract from an interview published in 1993 in the final Journey Force (official Journey fan club) newsletter, in which Steve Perry relates his encounter with Lincoln: "Lora Beard: _How about introducing the guys who played on your record?_ Steve: [...] _I found Lincoln Brewster, the guitar player, through Randy Jackson_ [Steve's friend, whom he recruited as bassist on Journey's latest album at the time, "Raised on Radio"]. _Randy is now the main West Coast cheese for Sony Music. Thanks for stopping by to comment. However, I think we have to bear in mind that 30 years have passed between this song and those being released this year-end, for example: the vocal abilities of a 45-year-old are not the same as those of a 75-year-old, nor are the artistic aspirations and feelings you want to share with the world, and for Steve Perry in particular, it seems to me we have to take into account a fourth factor that almost alienated him from music and his audience forever, I'm talking about his conflicted departure from Journey in the late 90s. In the end, we're lucky to be able to enjoy his voice again today, even if it's "going for a softer" sound...
@failingup4907
@failingup4907 2 ай бұрын
@@CyregO I didn't mean today, meant raised on radio/trial by fire. Those albums were too soft. It was more Steve Perry solo than Journey. I'm glad Journey got their edge back in Arrival, one of my favorite albums.
@CyregO
@CyregO 2 ай бұрын
@@failingup4907 Oh right, I understand your point better. As much as I find the comparison between Steve's solo albums and _Raised on Radio_ (album released a decade or so before this music video, and produced by Steve with the assistance of Randy Goodrum, his coauthor on _Street Talk_ and later _Against the Wall)_ legitimate; _Trial by Fire,_ although adapting to the studio "technological" evolutions of its time, is for me in the tradition of the _Escape/Frontiers_ diptych, with the return of the Smith/Valory rhythm section. From memory, there are also quite a few tracks rocking hard on it, aren't there? _(after a quick review: Message of Love, One More, Can't Tame the Lion, but above all Castle Burning and I Can See It in Your Eyes, the bonus track on the Japanese version of the album)_ Speaking of the latter song, if you're not already familiar with it, I'd recommend Steve's 2007 solo cover with the punk rock band Guff for their _Symphony of Voices_ album. As for _Arrival,_ this album clearly didn't enjoy the success it would have deserved in its day, but due to Perry's absence, it at least had the merit of proving that Journey's style and sound in the '80s owed as much to Cain and Schon as it did to the former. And I'd even add that the vocal duets of the two newcomers Castronovo and Augeri were on a par with those of Perry and Rolie in the late '70s!

Is it the presence of Joshua trees that makes you say that? Personally, I think so too, even though Wikipedia states (without source) that it was filmed “in the Grand Canyon area” with a link pointing to the main one by that name, in Arizona. Yet the Mojave Desert is closer to L.A., where Steve recorded this _For the Love of Strange Medicine_ album. By the way, I assume by its interior structure that the ruined shack shown in this music video is an old movie set, and given its dilapidated state at the time of the music video, there might be nothing left of it today, 30 years later? On a personal note, this cabin in the desert reminds me of the end of _Ask the Dust,_ John Fante's 1939 bestseller: at the end of the novel, the narrator's girlfriend, seriously ill and consumed by addictions, gives up on the happiness he can finally offer her and disappears *into the Mojave Desert* (😉) after a last stop in the scruffy wooden shack of the narrator's love rival...

@@CyregO You're right, Joshua Trees grow in Arizona too. I do know they only tend to grow in a narrow range of elevation, but, I'm sure there are many exceptions to that. As for the location with Steve, who can say? Could be anywhere. Looks legit. A guy found the actual Joshua Tree pictured on the U2 album Joshua Tree, outside the Park, but close enough to the Park. When I was there, it had fallen over (Pushed over?) and was dead, and not much let of anything, including all the tokens it's been photographed with.

@@hushingsilence Sad if this tree was intentionally damaged... Some information about it from the Wikipedia page for U2's eponymous album: _The tree photographed for the sleeve fell around 2000, yet the site remains a popular tourist attraction for U2 fans. One person inserted a plaque into the ground reading, “Have you found what you're looking for?”, in reference to the album's track “I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For”.
