Thank you for your reaction (and your subscription too), sir: it gave me the opportunity to discover some of your songs. Hats off to you! It's funny that you and Steve share the same surname, because when I first discovered Steve Perry, and in particular his portraits chosen to illustrate the album "For the Love of Strange Medicine", of which _You Better Wait_ was the first single, I wondered if he didn't have Indigenous origins. In fact, it turns out that he is the grandson of Azorean immigrants, from a Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic, who arrived in California when both of his parents were just children... so, nothing to do with it! By the way, do you know the song _Colors of the Spirit,_ one of Journey's songs they co-wrote with lyricist John Bettis for their reunion album "Trial by Fire", two years after this solo album? I've always imagined that it referred to the Wounded Knee Massacre, or at least to a dramatic episode in the American Indian Wars... What do you think of this supposition?

@CyregO4 ай бұрын
Speaking of a “little girl”, I'm now wondering if these two songs aren't related or even addressed to the same person: _"I'm the fool that played the part, the one that broke your heart, girl I'm so sorry... So what more can a poor boy do, I'm reaching out to you, so now don't you stay?"_ / _"Run away, one more day, a broken-hearted child at play... I pray for you Baby Blue, in the name of love I reach for you!"_ And, a little further on: _"Shades turn red from green to blue, what more can I do? I told you this before, so please walk out that door..."_ / _"And the neon lights, reflect your life, only you know where you hide, baby! Stop yourself before you fall, stop before you lose it all, 'cause somewhere there's love..."_ What do you think of these similarities?
@reneeheknowsmyname67714 ай бұрын
@@CyregO ......... Every interesting!! I never really knew how much they back each other up!! I'm not even sure if Perry realizes that!!...lol... Let's see, Little Girl was written in 1980 for a Japanese movie soundtrack 'Dream After Dream' and 'You Better Wait' was written in 1994, Perry's second studio solo album. I have no idea! That's a really good question! I wonder what it would sound like listening to both songs back-to-back!

Can't get enough of listening to it Steve Perry is the "voice"..When I first heard this I thought it was Journey, Steve's original band. However, I believe, from this song, that this band Steve put together is equally as good, if not better than his original Journey band Steve fronted for years to major success.
@CyregO Жыл бұрын
Great stuff from this "Strange Medicine band", as Steve himself liked to call them, indeed, both on their only studio album _(I Am, Stand Up Before It's Too Late...)_ and live. Not to the point of dethroning Journey in my eyes though, especially with all the ups and downs he went through with that band, and the musical excellence of each of the members - Neal, Gregg, Steve Smith among others - who made it up over the years (at least from the 70s to the 90s, over the period Steve was involved), but one of my eternal regrets is that Steve didn't revive this 2nd band in 1998, after his definitive departure from Journey and "while the iron was hot"... A few years ago, Lincoln Brewster brought out his _surf green_ guitar from those years, announcing that he was still in touch with Steve, but nothing has come of it musically... yet?

Thanks to Velizar (Vel_0000) who merged the full video for us! And here's an extract from an interview published in 1993 in the final Journey Force (official Journey fan club) newsletter, in which Steve Perry relates his encounter with Lincoln: "Lora Beard: _How about introducing the guys who played on your record?_ Steve: [...] _I found Lincoln Brewster, the guitar player, through Randy Jackson_ [Steve's friend, whom he recruited as bassist on Journey's latest album at the time, "Raised on Radio"]. _Randy is now the main West Coast cheese for Sony Music. He knew I had been looking for a guitar player for a long time. There were so many people in this town that could play a lot of chops but they really had no feel. The more I looked, the more disappointing it felt. There wasn't a whole lot of heart in their playing. Randy called and said he was given this tape a kid had made in his home studio. The songs were unfinished, but they stood on their own; they were so pretty. I was standing here in this room listening to the tape and I could feel that there was something behind his playing. There was soul there. I called him and we talked for a long time. He was living at home with his mom at the time._ Lora: _He must have had a major freak out when you called him out of the blue._ Steve: * laughs * _Yeah, I guess. I don't think about things like that sometimes. Anyway, he came to Los Angeles and that was the beginning of me, Paul_ [Taylor, Winger's keyboardist/guitarist] _and Lincoln hanging out and jamming._ [...] _Paul, Linc and I were at a rehearsal place here in Los Angeles and we were just jamming and having a lot of fun. We were thinking we might put something together, but nothing was for sure..."_ Note that Lincoln and his (still) wife Laura got married in 1994, some months after the recording of this "For the Love of Strange Medicine" album and just before Lincoln embarked on a 6-month North American tour to support it.

@@CyregOactually I'm very happy with the results, it's the best i could do and even posted the video for a day or two in my channel but took it down and i dislike reuploading stuff so that's why it hasn't appeared since
@CyregO4 ай бұрын
@@Vel_0000 Welcome on your video, Velizar! 🙌 You're right: I found our conversation back then under your remaster of _Girl Can't Help It,_ and indeed you didn't write that you were disappointed with the result, it was an extrapolation on my part. I have therefore corrected my previous comment. Over the years, I've come up with a few thoughts about this video, which I'll share with you here in case you're curious... 😊 For a long time, I assumed this song was about Steve's (or one of Steve's) girlfriend in the '90s, who had been a charm model in her youth, from what I could find online. But a few days ago, I noticed some similarities with this *1980* Journey song, _Little Girl,_ which call this interpretation into question: _"I'm the fool that played the part, the one that broke your heart, girl I'm so sorry... Stop yourself before you fall, stop before you lose it all, 'cause somewhere there's love..."_ So now I'm wondering if these 2 songs aren't related, and if they're not addressed to the same person. Also, someone below this video recently told me the harmonies between 0:51 and 1:00 reminded her of those in the _Anytime_ intro, which could also be seen as a self-citation or a nod to Journey's legacy. 🧐 As for the symbolism of the song and video, the _“Don't look back, don't lose heart”_ part + filming in a ruin in the middle of the desert have always reminded me of the myth of Lot's wife in the Old Testament, transformed into a pillar of salt in the desert after turning back to her burning city. Given that in the band, at least guitarist Lincoln Brewster was (and still is) a committed Christian, I figure it's not impossible that this was one of their conscious references. Another possible interpretation I had for this choice of location was a reference to _Ask the Dust,_ John Fante's 1939 bestseller: at the end of the novel, the narrator's girlfriend, gravely ill and plagued by addictions, gives up on the happiness he can finally offer her and disappears into the Mojave Desert after a last stop in a shabby wooden shack... Incidentally, although Wikipedia identifies the filming location (without source) as “the Grand Canyon area”, I wonder if it might not rather be the Mojave Desert, closer to L.A. (where Steve recorded this FTLOSM album)? 🤷

Is it the presence of Joshua trees that makes you say that? Personally, I think so too, even though Wikipedia states (without source) that it was filmed “in the Grand Canyon area” with a link pointing to the main one by that name, in Arizona. Yet the Mojave Desert is closer to L.A., where Steve recorded this _For the Love of Strange Medicine_ album. By the way, I assume by its interior structure that the ruined shack shown in this music video is an old movie set, and given its dilapidated state at the time of the music video, there might be nothing left of it today, 30 years later? On a personal note, this cabin in the desert reminds me of the end of _Ask the Dust,_ John Fante's 1939 bestseller: at the end of the novel, the narrator's girlfriend, seriously ill and consumed by addictions, gives up on the happiness he can finally offer her and disappears *into the Mojave Desert* (😉) after a last stop in the scruffy wooden shack of the narrator's love rival...

@@CyregO You're right, Joshua Trees grow in Arizona too. I do know they only tend to grow in a narrow range of elevation, but, I'm sure there are many exceptions to that. As for the location with Steve, who can say? Could be anywhere. Looks legit. A guy found the actual Joshua Tree pictured on the U2 album Joshua Tree, outside the Park, but close enough to the Park. When I was there, it had fallen over (Pushed over?) and was dead, and not much let of anything, including all the tokens it's been photographed with.

@@hushingsilence Sad if this tree was intentionally damaged... Some information about it from the Wikipedia page for U2's eponymous album: _The tree photographed for the sleeve fell around 2000, yet the site remains a popular tourist attraction for U2 fans. One person inserted a plaque into the ground reading, “Have you found what you're looking for?”, in reference to the album's track “I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For”. It is a common misconception that the site is within Joshua Tree National Park, when in fact it is over 200 miles away from the park._

@@CyregO Yep, that's it. The plaque is really cool. I would think that occasionally people might pour some water at it's base, since it was so popular. I find it curious why it fell over/died. Perhaps that's another mystery to solve. But... I digress. 😄

Yes Catherine, from his 2nd solo album _For the Love of Strange Medicine_ (3rd album, if counting the never-released _Against the Wall),_ during Journey's _Raised on Radio / Trial by Fire_ 10 years hiatus. Personnel of the "Strange Medicine band" were: Lincoln Brewster (guitar), Paul Taylor (keyboards), Moyes Lucas (drums), Todd Jensen (bass), and -of course- Steve Perry on lead vocals (+ Larry Kimpel, playing bass on the record). Each of them also took part in songwriting and backing vocals. Sadly, they parted ways at the end of the tour in 1995, as Steve was making his (brief) return in Journey, and never had the opportunity to record any further projects together. Note that Todd Jensen, who had already played with Neal Schon in the past, is now Journey's bassist since 2021! 😃

_When you close your eyes / You long to be there / One more time?_ 😉 _"As far as touring again, I never say never at this point. My life has proven me just that.”_ (Steve Perry, May 2024, Rolling Stone Magazine)

Nice comment Miste, which I also relate to, but unfortunately it's extremely unlikely that Steve himself will read it. Even on his official channel _(steveperrymusic),_ the only time he responded to comments was during the livestream of his new albums, and sadly, the only “Steve Perry” accounts responding under his videos are usually frauds/scammers...

@CyregO yes I know. I been through this the past year. And I left the message to let him know if he ever did read it. But I tried anyway.

Hi Suzanne, as I come across your comments under most of Journey and/or Steve Perry videos I can watch, it's nice to find you under this song too (and also to count you among the channel's subscribers 🙏). _I see your face at the movies, I hear your voice on the radiooo..._ Just kidding! 😂 By the way, did you know that I regularly update 3 chronological playlists of Steve's complete discography, from his early days around Hanford to the present day? You can find them in the pinned comment on this video, if you want.

I remember the first time I heard this. I thought Journey had released some new music with Perry. Love of Strange Medicine, is an incredible album. Some of Steve Perry's best work since leaving Journey. Still one of my all-time favorites.
@CyregOАй бұрын
I agree with you. It's worth noting that even though Steve Perry had forced Journey into dormancy for several years, _For the Love of Strange Medicine_ was a springboard for a reunion with the band in 1995 and the release of _Trial by Fire_ the following year, before their regrettable definitive “divorce”. At the end of this solo album, Steve addressed the band with an apology song written with Tim Miner, _"Anyway",_ and here's what he said about it in a 2011 interview with Andrew McNeice (Melodic Rock): _"We were brothers 'til the very end. You can't become successful in such an endeavor like becoming a world-known rock band unless you really band together (which is where the term “band” comes from), unless you band together like war buddies and you're absolutely brothers 'til the end. Though you have your moments and you hate each other, you're joined at the hip because you have a mission. And we had that. We had that spark. We had that goalpost in our hearts, all of us. And it truly was a fire that burned inside us all. And that song was my homage to them... and I don't think any of the Journey members ever heard it to be honest with you."_

@@jameshancock7285 In that case, I can only recommend the _"Anyway"_ music video posted in 2021 by chaseharlann: it's a montage apparently from the early 2000s by an unknown fan, but in the absence of an official video for this Steve song, it's the closest thing we've got. What these two songs have in common (and not the most glorious) is that the narrator -indistinguishable in the lyrics from the 30-40 year-old singer- addresses young girls aged 16 and 17 respectively... 😐
