This is so wrong abuse should never be allowed in all sports especially in women's soccer basketball softball and of course pro wrestling boxing and Motorsports, abuse should go away and never come back

Having resd Off Balance by Dominique Moceanu many times, I get the sense that Bela had that other persona in order to hide the REAL monster inside. The Karolyi's didn't want anyone knowing what terrible coaches they were, in fear of losing their top flight of talented Elite gymnasts.

I remember Simone Biles was trying to make history back to back in one night and ended up not landing one of her flips correctly and Riley seeing Simone upset about it had a smirk on her face and told Simone "good job". I haven't liked Riley since then and I'm glad she fell here and fell on the balance beam.

I coached for Kelli in the 90’s for a few years and never saw anything that would rise to the level of abuse. I was brought in by my former coach, Blaine Jefferson, who I absolutely adored. So I am speaking from direct experience.

She was not coached by Haney for most of her life. The commentator is wrong. She moved there at the start of high school which is old for a gymnast. It was actually Laurie who was there for most of her life but most of the "gymternet" has never been sympathetic to Laurie. Hmmm.

Kim Kelly actually deserved to be on that team Betty did not and Shannon whom family I know well was the best gymnast on that team not Kim and damn bela just wanted a team of his athletes only. I was at those nationals and Olympic trials and I swear bela was acting a fool during that entire time even got into trouble with judges during the process. Tasha was a better all around gymnast and she did what Alyssa could not. Mary Lee even said Alyssa wasn't focused enough unfortunately. And with Maggie Steve was upset with any athlete that spoke out against the organization and Tom Forester was horrible as the head of gymnastics several girls have stated it

Growing up with a parent who had an eating disorder, I was the designated adult at an early age. I was the one who had to do the household chores because my mother was too weak, the one who had to do the grocery shopping because my mother couldn't do it and I just wanted her to be able to do it without triggering her eating disorder, the one who had to force her to eat something, the one who had to make sure that she didn't purge the food. I didn't allow anyone to know just how bad things were at home because I just wanted to have a normal mother

Why is abusive coaching allowed? Because they’re athletes? They’re minors. If it’s so notorious that the general public/viewing audience knows about it and commentators point it out, more should be done about than telling them to switch gyms.

😳OMG...back in the early 80's, I was told to lose weight 4'11/94lbs by my private club without an ounce of fat competing in optional gymnastics in private club, freshman on varsity gymnastics in high school, AND played girls fast-pitch softball...I had only just turned 13 at the time🤷🏻♀️

I am a huge fan of Kim Zmeskal. I always have been. And anyone still can be. And we can all still feel the same way about gymnastics that she has done in her career. That won't ever be changed. But it does not protect her from scrutiny regarding her coaching methods or her husband's coaching methods. She was brought up in a toxic gym environment. And then she proceeded to have to coach within that same system. They were all sucked into a program of dominate or die. And it produced one of the greatest tragedies of all times... And I have seen that behind the routine episode. And I will tell you that those comments that her husband make are very cringy and uncomfortable. He calls them Shamu or something like that. Equating them to a whale. He's not explicitly calling them fat. But that's a bad association to make. And also the passive aggressive comments that he makes to get his gymnast irritated to motivate them. That's also not acceptable. Coming from a grown man to girls under his supervision. That's there on the tapes. And that's even the edited version. God knows what was said without cameras there. I've never seen bad behavior out of Kim on any footage of her as a coach. Which does show quite a strong amount of self-control that hopefully carries out at all times. Because Bela and the rest of the coaches of her era certainly didn't behave themselves. So I'll give her that. But we can't give this woman a pass because we love her or we loved her or we loved her gymnastics. Those are two different things.
@brianmccartney32622 ай бұрын
Yeah those Shamu comments are terrible. And he can't possibly actually think or is consciously thinking that he is calling them fat. Because these are tiny little girls. Junior some of them are all of them. But that doesn't mean that he doesn't realize that he is equating them to whales. And the mind of a impressionable girl in this world who is going through her teenage years is going to take that statement the wrong way and it could damage her for a very long time if not permanently. So that is a man not understanding his privilege and his position of power and his indifference to the feelings of these young women. I'm not even going to call them women they're girls. So regardless if that was malicious or not. Some people need to learn the proper way to speak to young children especially girls. And those comments are unacceptable.

I didn't hear anything egregious in the announcers' comments. There's so much real bs, calling out non-issues trivializes real issues. Listing the gymnasts weight was fucked up however, and I'm glad it's no longer done.

If gyms close down it would be for the better. Saves money. Gymnastics is not a sport but torture. It should be a hobby not something to compete in. Gymnastics industry exploits athletes and profitizes off their pain and suffering. Why not just shut gyms down. The sport has lost its luster. Its not exciting and more about impressing judges and coaches. Take down the beam, take down the vault, roll up the mats, take down the bars.

Gymnastics is a power sport, and power sports require energy. Christie started struggling in gymnastics as soon as she started starving herself. Starving herself reduced her quad strength, making her unable to jump as high. Many judges were cruel and petty in those days. I was told not to wear my hair in pigtails because pigtails made me look like Olga Korbut. And what's wrong with that?!
