@katanamaking26062 күн бұрын
I make tamahagane and oroshigane. 4epel weighs approximately 900g, kilogram. But it depends on the order. I made a 600g blade for iaido.

i do have a simple question, why does your power hammer not ever stop stroking even after you lift off the treadle? also what is the ram weight on your hammer?
@katanamaking26066 күн бұрын
It's a 50 year old machine, with a friction clutch. It depends on how it's adjusted. The less tight it is, the weaker the blow.

i really enjoy watching you create your work, it’s awesome to see someone actually doing it as much as possible to the order of how it was done hundreds even thousands of years ago keeping in mind that times have changed but your respect for the process is greatly appreciated.

@katanamaking260629 күн бұрын

The result is what matters. Hataraki is not made by clay. Steel is made by clay. Clay is just a support. However, if I use a paste with a coarse structure, it is for a reason. It affects the habuchi, the edge of the hamon. But you always need to know the steel, how it will react under specific conditions. The hardening temperature. You can hardly judge the exact temperature from the video. Also in a workshop where it is dark, the temperature looks higher. You never see the real color in the video or photos. However, to create hamon, you need to reach a specific temperature range. If it is low, martensite will not form. No hamon. If it is high, it is also not good. It limits the formation of hataraki and cracks will form. But again, it depends on the steel. Different conditions for shinto, different for koto. Each style requires different steel and different technique, temperature.
