I wouldn't always say CRANK the reso either let the drum breathe a bit 380 htz roughly measured by a tunebot!
@MasshoffDrums3 күн бұрын
If you try tuning both heads to the exact same frequency you gonna get a heel of a drumsound out opf your snare too! The thing is that it is tricky that the tune bot shows not allways the fundamental note but an overtone octaves above. Try 174 Hz , 180Hz , or 198Hz. Check those numbers plus minus 1-2 Hz. Those frequencies harmonize with the resonant frequencies of the human body. If you like a tone it is because it is resonating with your body wich gives you a pleasant feeling. There is lots of more stuff to take into account. I am working on it...
@benking91603 күн бұрын
@@MasshoffDrums With all due respect I think you are not using the Tunebot correctly. I use it to match each lug to the same frequency e.g. 280 htz top head and 380 on the reso or snare side head. Not to measure the fundamental frequency of the drum. There is a filter button that you can use to ignore the overtones or stop it from picking up the fundamental frequency. On a snare drum you would Never make the top and bottom heads the same pitch!

@@benking9160 kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6iul6l7gsusgbc. This should proof you wrong! Every drum underlies the law of resonance even the snare. I would not have believed it myself 15 years ago. Law of resonance is THE key to everything.
@benking91602 күн бұрын
@MasshoffDrums You obviously missed the point at 5 minutes in where he states that the snare head still tends to stay higher. It's obviously not always cranked though which was my point! So not quite sure what you're trying to prove to me here.

Could someone please help me understand how you +1 each lug then take off 1.5 on those bottom two lugs? - 0.5 on a lug doesn't make sense to me
@MasshoffDrums4 күн бұрын
Just play around with the bottom lugs. You don´t want to get rid of the body of the tone, just the overtones. You have to play around how tight or loose works best for your desired sound. This is a studio trick for a fat sound without hitting hard!! If you hit too hard you loose the body and the finness... I hope that helps!
@benking91603 күн бұрын
I'll help you, ignore this method as it is a very strange way to tune a drum! Get yourself a Tunebot and read the instructions properly! You will never look back.
@MasshoffDrums3 күн бұрын
@@benking9160 It is indeed a strange way. This trick is for soft studio playing to get a mighty ballad sound and is around for 40 years. Try tuning both heads to the exact same fundamental frequency. Check 174Hz, 180Hz or 198Hz. Around those numbers you will hit your own resonant body frequency and you will love immediately!

Thanks guys. I found this video very helpful to get a tuning that worked for me!
@THEKECHEXPERIENCE6 күн бұрын
I've been experimenting with this tuning technique for some time, as I'm confronted with sound issues in the club where I work. The drums are in a high corner of the room, close to the ceiling, and the walls are painted concrete. Lots of reverberation. To get a powerful sound through the sound system without hurting the customers' ears, low tuning is really effective. The sound is punchy and cuts through the mix without overpowering the vocals or other instruments. My problem is that I'm using a 13-inch wooden snare drum with only 8 lugs, which makes this technique more complicated, as the tuning doesn't hold well. Has anyone any tips? Another thing: I 99% of the time play rimshots with really does not held either I guess ;)
@MasshoffDrums6 күн бұрын
Dude, this is a trick to get a fat, ballad studio sound through LIGHT playing.If the attack gets louder than the buzz from the wires it won´t sound good on a recording. the trick works on a 13" snare but you have only 2 of those "tone screws" left and right. This is not for heavy playing! This is why some people complain the rim could bent....This is a studio trick not for bashing on a live gig.... thanks for watching anyway!
@anabellalinares85820 күн бұрын
Hi! How about the bottom? How do you tune it?
@MasshoffDrums20 күн бұрын
2 ways always work: 1. Crank the reso head table top tight. Sounds always good but you loose the body of the drum on medium to lower tunings. Since you have taken one head due to way higher tension out of the equation. 2. Exact same Tension (Frequency) on both heads. This really works. The big secret on drum tuning is: It´s not the air inside the drum that makes the sound happen-It´s the law of resonance!! This is the biggest can of worms to open because it does not matter if tune and play a drum this IS the law of everything in this universe! You can experience it all on your drum set....

Depends on your style of playing. Hoops bent in general over time even resonant side hoops bent....According to the users nobody had problems with that over the last 8 years. It´s a trick for soft playing. The trick is to play in the studio in a way that the snare buzz at the end is louder than the attack. This is not for everybody nor for every situation. Thanks for your comment.

Very cool. I actually sold Toby a drum set when he came to LA…. I think it was him 7:01 😮. He was Larry Mullins then. I worked at Guitar Center. He ordered a kit but the salesman never followed up. He came in with the receipt and I had to tell him the salesman no longer worked there and he forgot to order your set He was pissed/bummed Couldn’t blame him but he let me reorder it and it came in and he was happy

Sitting on the sofa and playing along to a record is always easy . When reality hits it looks like this: Those 15 people played this song for the first time ,after sitting 12 hours on top of each others in a van with no rehearsal and the tempo is raised to 186 instead of 168(?) 5 minutes before the show. This song had a different energy from the get go and as a drummer you have to adjust on the spot and lead that Big Band. It is more important to play full from heart in the moment than to be a perfect copy cat. Thanks for watching this thing is ages old....

@Liamhears8 ай бұрын
not sure bro but will try out, just retuned my snare like this. So you decide which tone you want when the lowest three screws are (almost) completely loose, then you decide howmuch overtone you want ?
@MasshoffDrums8 ай бұрын
When the 3 bottom screws are lose you should already have the dry tone with no overtones. Watch out when you lose the screws, there is a point when the body of the tone disappears. You don ´t want that! It´s just a strange trick that provides a little more high frequencies (wich mics love) on a dry sounding drum compared to anything you put on the head like moongels,zero rings etc. But don´t get too crazy about it!
