Ringo was a genius...He tuned his drums, for a start, and they always sounded superb. This guy more or less got the sound, but his playing is so different from Ringo's, that when he plays a Come Together-like groove is like night and day...

I love the sound man, awesome ideas. I’ve recently been recording some Beatles covers and found myself hitting hard to get that sound, though. Cranking the snares and whacking the drums. I did two different drum takes on my ‘Here Comes the Sun’ cover, one quiet and one loud, and I found myself much closer to the sound on the loud one. That’s just for the Ringo sound though. Cool video nonetheless!

Uh, Ringo never played that soft on anything! He smacked the hell out of his kit.

He never said that Ringo played that way... He said the Ringo drum tuning was also great for singer/songwriter scenarios and studio work, and to get the best tone you should play em lightly - watch the video at least and listen to the guy before you critique him!

Yes but the sets were not as loud back then. He's playing with modern kit.

Listen to any song that Stewart Copeland played the drums on. It is perfect reggae rock sound. It is high pitched and sounds like gunshots.

Steel drum, single ply head, cranked UP and ringy... Both heads very tight. Rimshots should be nice and PING like a timbale, played near the edge should have some funky overtones. Shallow depths have that crisp rimshot you want and steel has the ring so a steel piccolo is a common choice - 14x3 or so. I have a 14x3.5 steel Pearl free floater that works great. You can go even ringier though, a cheap steel piccolo can be just the thing for a gritty, raw reggae sound. If you’re trying to get the sound without a new drum, pick your ringiest drum (hopefully it’s also shallow-ish) and crank it up.

just goes to show how piss poor drums are if they rely on bunging quilts in the bass drum and muffling well manufactured toms with tea towels.
