Ff9 was also sakaguchis second crack at the circle of life theme he wanted to tell in ff7. The difference is that, in ff7, the soul belongs to the planet whereas in ff9, the soul belongs to you.

I played FFX when it came out (I remember playing a demo from a Magazine and it was definitely a day 1 purchase). So this was before X-2 was even announced. It definitely different to Aerith. Aerith’s death is sudden and unexpected; she’s gone and she dies in the middle of the game: and that’s it, you don’t see her again until the ending and can do some side content to see a brief glimpse of her ghost in the church. With Yunas pilgrimage is was different, as there’s a sense of doom over every citizen in spira that grows onto Yuma specifically. I don’t think I ever thought she would die; especially after Bevelle when it’s known it’s futile to call the final aeon. So while I felt the emotion of the story you always knew there was a twist coming and they would eventually find another way which they do, the twist being that tidus dies (or fades) instead. I think that happening in the ending as opposed to the middle like aerith had a very different emotional impact; had Yuna died calling the final aeon and then the party had to kill Yu Yevon once she broke the shell that is sin I think that would have been a different emotional weight again. FFX is a masterpiece. Great video

People meming on the forced laughing scene annoyed me to no end to for the very same reason; it undermines the true meaning of what's happening there so bad. Tidus just witnessed an entire village get destroyed and then gets told that his father, a person he loathes, is responsible for that. He also starts to realize that his world is gone and he can never return. And then to top it all off the person he's clearly a bit smitten by tells him he's not even allowed to feel bad about it.... because others expect them to carry on a brave face. It's not bad voice acting in that scene... it's deliberate. It's a forced laugh of frustration and anger because he's expected to smile, laugh and be happy about it. With Tidus being a bit of a rebelious brat ofc he would let his frustration shine through and perform a bit of malicious compliance; it's simply who he (still) is but inadvertedly he also gives Yuna a bit of an outlet... smart cookie as she is she catches on to what Tidus is doing and decides to join in and the absurdity of what they're doing (causing the rest of the party to comment on whether they've lost their minds or not) eventually truly DOES make them laugh which must be a welcome outlet for Yuna as blitzball is for Spira.... Just because people don't realize what's happening doesn't make the voice-acting bad.... they knew exactly what they were doing in that scene and the people who meme'd on it clearly don't

The greatest game ever made.

Just finished this game, it really sucks for the most part, com at is bad, platform is dumb, puzzle are too simple and boring, characters are forgettable, ending is dumb. The game is just bad.

I loved this game but can I honestly say its story is up there with 7 and 10. Hard to say, its hard to pick specific moments for it as its just very good the entire game. It’s hard to pick things out

0:30 Right off the bat, i would back that up to the indus river valley civilization. Stories like "Jack and the Ogre" and "Rapunzel" are (potentially) upwards of 10,000 years old.

Dagger is more of a summoner and Eiko is more of a white mage. You won't be casting Holy with Dagger and you won't be summoning Bahamut with Eiko.

I named Garnet/Dagger "Sarah". First of all, that is her actual name and secondly, it's more common.

I remember renting this game at the local video warehouse during the PS2 ero, with no prior knowledge of the original title. Took it home, and remember it being fairly difficult as a kid, but loved that it reminded me so much of that golden age of PS1-PS2 FF releases. Never made it very far, but remember enjoying the vibe of it. Just stumbled back on it today 22 years later.

The only game I put more than 100 hours into until Destiny. The GOAT RPG.

Honestly I hate the "twist" with the final aeon kills the summoner, it is stupid lol. Someone would have told tidus.

Vivi is my favorite mage character in video games.

The laugh scene is often called bad voice acting by people who don't understand it. Its Tidus having a small breakdown. It can be seen on the others' faces as they watch and Yuna commenting that he should stop. When he doesn't, she joined him and it evolved from the fake screaming laughs into natural laughter between him and Yuna. Its not an easy scene to watch, but wasn't bad voice acting

Ya know, I've been due for a FF9 replay. I think I played 7 and 8 way more but when I think of FF "nostalgia", you're right. It's always 9 that comes to mind.

FF IX is one of the best, IV is my favorite but IX is a very close second. I just wish FF would go back to games like this and stop doing whatever it is they are doing because IMO it’s not FF anymore
