Aside from the virgins and the aids parts this movie was a very accurate portrayal of kids that grew up in big cities were like at the time. This was the closest movie i ever seen to a regular day as teenager in my neighborhood at the time.

What makes Just Like Hell disturbing isn't the gore, there isn't a lot, it's very vague, it's the fact that it's so real. It's something that could happen to anyone, and that's what makes it so damn terrifying.

I could never quite point to where the allure of down and out street girls came from but now I know of at least one source. It has to do with purity and the disillusionment of youth. The girls pull you in when it seems like they are not paying attention. I think that is the essence of drug culture. While a slave you still source others so it seems like you still have something? Not sustainable.

You didn't speak about Climax's amazing credit sequence. Situated in the middle of the film where all the dancing and fun is still happening with such an awesome score. Everyone takes turns dancing and then finally once the last person has finished the music takes over and the space opens for the credits to boom to the music. And then silence. What we see next is a new film dressed in themes of horror and tragedy rather than the dramatic film about dancers that we believe we are watching.

A Sentimental Novel must be pretty disturbing if the publisher has no plans on doing a reprint of it. I have a PDF of it, but I cannot get into it. I'm not a fan of the writing style.

I swear Sam Levinson is just living a fantasy with the way he writes his female characters in his projects. Mark Shwan the writer and creator of One tree hill was accused of the same thing.

A painting that I kind of wished would be included in this iceberg is “Untitled” by Shima Seien, a Japanese nihonga artist who had a brief but evocative career during the Taishō and Shōwa eras of Japan. In it, we see her sitting in front of an unfinished painting with a discolored bruise on her right eye. According to Seien, the bruise symbolizes the violence inflicted on women by men during her lifetime, as well as her frustrations of how discriminatory her society was against women who pursued jobs outside of domestic contexts. Seien is known to have battled said discrimination in her field, and eventually ended her career when she got married in 1921. Regardless, the few paintings she left behind are thought-provoking.

Interesting seeing Natsuo Kirino’s books on here. She’s quite a talented author, and I’ve read three out of four of her translated novels. She provides interesting commentary on misogyny and sexual violence towards women in Japan, particularly centering on how women navigate patriarchal societies. I will warn you, however, she does not hesitate with depicting violence. In Out, the four female protagonists are pursued by a former nightclub owner who also happens to be a convicted rapist and murderer, and Kirino makes sure to detail his past actions and what he’s capable of doing now. In Grotesque, the protagonist discovers that her sister, who was one of two prostitutes whose murder kickstarted the novel, was being preyed upon and sexually abused by both a family friend and a cousin before being prostituted by a wealthy student at her high school. Although I like her works, I can’t stress enough how disturbing they get, especially with the mentions of sexual violence and abuse. Still, I’d recommend checking her books out, even if you have to tread carefully.

26:39 - Although there is graphic incidents that happen in the book, it’s nowhere a disturbing book. It’s a book about hope in the face of a horrific declined world, as the motif of a torch and “carrying the fire” are repetitive reasons the characters continue forward despite the conditions of their modern world. A humanities book overall. A wonderful read if your curious, give it a try! :)

Controversy with certain films aside, I feel like Vortex is his biggest haymaker, it's very clearly layed out within the film that he was coming to terms with his near death experience. The moment the first of the couple die and the screen is just predominently black for the latter of the film just left me feeling...numb? I'll go with numb.

Very very difficult question and I might make a video about it, but a list of some of my favourites would be Quentin Dupieux, Hiro Murai, Michael Haneke, Gaspar Noe, Martin Scorsese, Lee Chang Dong, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Celine Sciamma, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Alfonso Cuaron, Emma Seligman, Luca Guadagnino, Sean Baker, Vittorio De Sica, and Agnes Varda. I would also say Charlotte Wells and Celine Song, but I want to see where their work goes in the future before officially adding them to my favorites

Two books I've never seen on one of these lists but think should be are Confessions and Dear God I Wanted to Live. I'm not sure if the second one is available widely in english but its a memoir/biography of a victim of the Siberian Deportations. I remember having to read it for school and it still sticks with me. Confessions is a thriller novel about the different perspectives of various people involved with the murder of a small girl and what happens after.

very well thought out & organized. i have struggled to find a decent summary of the trilogy itself by someone who clearly has watched the films and is familiar with LVT’s method of storytelling. a lot of people seem to get lost in the shock factor and miss the entire point, or copy the general consensus of the media and content creators who aren’t really even into film and therefore just focus on the violence and misogyny and don’t look at all three films as a whole. even the professional film critics seem to think it was just violence and a disconnection with sexuality for the sake of exploitation but i’ve never quite understood why “the point” seemed to go right over so many heads…until i realized i have major depression 😂
