Always appreciate the no BS approach from you. You won my respect when you said to skip audiobooks. ✌🏻 Literally, you were the first VO person I found who was up front about audiobooks not being worth your time, financially speaking.

I feel like I can knock VO out the fuckin park anywhere except in my booth at the mic lmfao. I swear any talent I have with it just drops at the door of the booth and it's so frustrating I almost have considered tearing the booth down and just treating the whole room so I can record at my desk in comfort or something but i worked so hard building the booth hahaha send help!

I feel this way too sometimes. For me, it's almost like there's something psychological about it. Once I hit that record button, I get nervous, or take it too seriously. Hoping that learning to relax with it comes with practice.

Quick question: when it comes to adding style tags on your demos, do you think it's best to use all ten slots? Or only the ones that MOST fit the style of your demo? Just wondering how that affects the voice match system. Like, if a client is looking for "charismatic + funny" and you have those two plus eight others labeled on some demos.... is that going to negatively affect your voice match scoring? Hopefully I'm making sense here! Thanks for all you do 🫡

While I largely agree, a couple details you shared in this video are a touch off to me. I know you mentioned later on that you don't do this genre, but I wish that was stated earlier on because my dude you have such effortless charismatic authority and community that takes what you say very seriously, even when your numbers are a bit off. Anyway, here's my notes from a handful of audiobook-specializing peers: you don't run into significant revision issues, BECAUSE you typically submit a 5-20m sample of the way you intend to read that covers as many major characters as possible, so that eliminates a lot of potential issues/pickiness down the road. Once you're locked into that agreement, they can't just ask you to reread the entire book lol, or if they do, it's on their dime. Also, most decently experienced narrators take 3-6 hours PFH (and when you're starting, 8-12 PFH isn't uncommon). 2 hours is a VERY expert/mastered level of time (unless you're not doing the editing yourself, ofc, which most times you are), and even those with a ton of experience don't hit that because a lot of experienced narrators read the entire book if not a significant swaths of it before even starting to record. So yeah, I'm with you lol. I don't do longform audio jobs for this very reason (I find them to be a huge PITA, AND you have to submit 3-10m long auditions? noooo thank you), though something not mentioned is that there IS something to say about having HOURS of decently pay rate (once you've mastered your process) work lined up, and rarely having to spend time auditioning, so it can be a great fit for those people, or anyone who just enjoys reading haha. Plus, the reality is that audiobooks are a lower competition level because of the lesser rates, so people who aren't booking *regular* gigs (especially if they're not P2Ps), this works really well for. My P2P work, a lot of times I refer to as my "bread and butter" work, the stuff that makes me a base/comfortable/consistent level of income (based on the what is largely the same mathematical strategy you use in previous videos) while I dig deeper into other more interesting or moonshot realms (video games, animation, class A union SAG commercials etc), whether that's training or just spending more time on those usually agented-level auditions. For some people, audiobooks is a great way to have a similar level of 'bread and butter work,' without needing to compete on P2Ps (though I always recommend P2Ps, because if you can't crush P2Ps it's even less likely you can crush agented stuff; that's just the reality of it). Cheers!
