Hi Aimee' I am a hockey player with severe overpronation in both feet. More on the right foot. I worked in the ice hockey equipment industry for seven years, and my company was avant garde because the then owner come from a professional figure skating background. We change the lives of hockey player who unknowingly dealt with pronation, supination, leg-length discrepancy, hip rotation issue. We would re-mount the blade chasis to compensate for the particualr issue. It made a HUGE dofference in my game, and post game pain. Sadly, the new hockey skates are a one-piece constructed boot and it appears that the corrective mounts are no longer feasible due to redrilling the mounting holes comprimising the boot's strucutral integerity. Also, we were anamolous in the market place. We were the only hockey stores (at that time), that did this for our customers. That chain no longer offers the service. I am keenly interested in the insoles since I just bought a new pair of skates. It looks as if your video is a couple years old. I hope they make market soon. Thank you!

That's so unfortunate that hockey blades can't be repositioned the way that figure skating blades can! I'm trying to get a status update from the new manufacturer. Please sign up for updates here: aimeericca.ck.page/14133ba329

The rink I go to is just a seasonal rink that gets built every year. I went for the first time in December and went again 2 more times. Each time I had different struggles in getting out on the ice or away from the wall. I'm not sure if it was the rental skates that were the problem or if it was just me haha, but I do want to buy my own skates. Only problem is I live in a small town so we don't have any skate shops around here..

See if they offer any kind of lessons. They may have a group program or approved coaches that can provide you with private lessons. You really shouldn't be using the wall at all. You will perform better if you skate more consistently, at least while the rink is open in the winter. Most likely the rental skates are not helping either. I have another video about what to do if you don't have a skate shop near you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6K8nniIeJqnnc0

I got Jackson Ultima freestyle skates a couple years ago but finally got around to breaking them in. After about 10 sessions on ice and heat molding they still caused immense pain. I think k i realized they are too small because my toes are bunches at the front. Now i have to start over.

It sounds as if you may not have been properly sized, or your foot changed over time. That can happen if you gain or loose weight, and especially if you are still growing. Skates are usually replaced once a year. It's best to consult with your coach and your skate tech.

I am using Edea Chorus with the size of 265 and width of C. Sadly there’s nowhere selling these Jackson insoles in my country so I’ll be asking from our relatives living in UK. There’s no way for me to try and see my size for these insoles 😞 Can you please tell me which size would fit with a C type Edea the best?

Our rink is pretty good. They do sharpen the skates. They can't always keep on top of it but they do send small batches of pairs up to the shop for sharpening. Public skate during the week is two hours and fifteen minutes, three and a half hours weekend evenings. During public skate they zam every 1 hour (takes fifteen minutes) and change direction after each zam. Laces kept up on too. They will not let you walk off the rubber padded area. You have to take the skates off to say, go to your car.

Thank you for your video, I always wondered isn’t wearing these boots as bad for your back and joints like wearing high heels?
14 күн бұрын
If you are properly fitted and have impact protecting insoles, you have some protection. The heel itself isn't necessarily "bad" if you are in the best boot option for you. However, the impact of landing jumps can affect your back and joints. That's why it's always best to get fitted by a trusted professional and work with a trained U.S. Figure Skating coach so that you can minimize the risks.
@hbob830

Thank you for your video, I saw someone say that Jackson wears out quickly is that true?
14 күн бұрын
That has not been my experience and a lot of my skaters wear Jackson! However, any boot will wear out quickly if its too big, the laces are not tied correctly, or if it doesn't provide the skater enough support for their height, weight, skating level/style of skating. That's why it's always best to get fitted by a professional skate tech to find the best boot for you. Another thing to consider is that different people have unique expectations about how long a boot should last. Depending on how often you skate and how quickly you progress, you can't really expect the boot to last longer than a year in a growing foot. Have you watched this video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4urap14jrGgY6c

Hey, I'm currently in group lessons and working on my salchow and got my waltz and toeloop down. I've only skated for the first time 7 months ago and for reference I'm 5'2, 125lbs and 16yrs old. I am getting professionally fitted by a skate tech soon but I don't really have a coach to go to so I just kind of want to know your opinion. I'm currently skating in Jackson Finesse and I know it's time for an upgrade because death creases are showing up and my soles really hurt when landing bc my skates aren't for my level. I wasn't expecting to progress this fast. I got my skates which were perfect for my level at the time thinking it would last me at least a year for learning the basics but its only been 7 months and now I need to upgrade and I was thinking of Edea chorus because that seems like the most popular choice for a skater around my level but I also heard about how even choruses, when skating so often can break down really easily and with the rate I'm progressing, I'm scared that I will outgrow the choruses fast too. The next skate above would be a concerto but that is a huge jump from my current Jackson Finesse. So I don't know. Should I go with choruses or concerto? Concertos might be too advance/stiff and ideally I get choruses but I don't want to have to replace my choruses within a year due to it breaking down or me progressing too fast.
15 күн бұрын
If Edea skates are properly fitted and maintained -> meaning you were fitted for the appropriate skate for your skating level and where you want to progress, have them shaped for your foot by an Edea-certified dealer, store them correctly, tie them the Edea way, and replace the laces each time you get your skates sharpened, Edea skates can last for quite a long time! The biggest reason that people say Edea doesn't last long is that they are incorrectly sized, tied, and never change their laces. You cannot compare Jackson's support to Edea's, as they differ entirely. The technology in Edea provides lateral support, so the support level does not impact your ability to bend your knees and ankles. The best thing to do is to discuss it with your group lesson instructor, the group lesson skating director, and your skate tech. They can provide you with more specific information for you and your skating. I also have a video about skates for teens here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enOTmZ-Ggr6emMk and more videos that explain what you need to know about Edea here: kzbin.info/aero/PLhIvo-BmGcaU91rtAwdxyzWWFiWW_6QCc&si=CdfwkNNhwOnzWWsJ

Idk if anybody will see this since it’s a two year old video but would the riedell ember be supportive to start jumps with? They don’t have it listed on their support guide as far as I can see. On rollerskates I can do a half lutz and waltz jumps that’s about as advanced as I get so far but I’d like to learn all the main single jumps eventually

Ember is a recreational skate designed for casual outdoor skating. The support rating is low and they are intended for style over instruction. This is why you do not see them listed in Reidell's support guide. I have tried on the Ember and found them very uncomfortable. I would not recommend them to a skater that is interested in learning to skate.

Hi I'm an Australian teen girl and I would LOVE to start figure skating! but unfortunately I can't as I am a high level dancer, so would it be a good idea just to start doing off ice training so when I get to start lessons I can be more comfortable??
20 күн бұрын
The purpose of off-ice training is to strength and condition figure skaters. It's not meant to prepare someone that is not a figure skater for skating. If you are a dancer doing sport specific training for figure skating, I would think that could be detrimental to your dancing. In reality, many figure skaters do dance as part of their off-ice training. In my experience many skaters that come from dance excel more easily in figure skating.

In Jackson Freestyles now, and they will work for at least a year more(I will probably reach Freestyle 1 then). They aren’t perfect however. One issue I have is a bit of heel slippage, even when fully tightened, but are otherwise a good fit. What would you recommend to correct that? Also, since I am thinking about upgrades in my next boot, to fit preferences, are there any advantages or disadvantages a low cut boot may offer over a standard cut, when it comes to movement?
21 күн бұрын
That’s a common issue many of my skaters experience in Jackson - heel lifting. I used to experience it with Riedell. However, I’ve not experienced it at all in Edea. It could be the design or specific feet doing better in one brand over another. I’ve had skaters switch to Risport and Edea and the problem has been solved. Lower cut boots can provide for easier/deeper knee/ankle bend. However, they also don’t provide as good ankle support for jumping. That’s why lower cut boots are typically marketed for ice dance. In my experience, Edea provides the same level mobility without sacrificing support.
@bradleyolinger1691

Would an ankle/tendon combo sleeve work to help the slippage until my next pair of skates, to get me through basic skills? I will look into Edeas at upgrade, but wanted to go traditional initially to be able to develop good fundamental skills before considering another brand. I don’t mind to pay money where needed, but also want to make sure that I also get exactly what I need. I will definitely look into Edea when the time comes for my next pair. Because I am on limited income, I do have to save well in advance.

And actually, the athletes are in exactly the same situation as we are. 99% of them also get paid nothing for all their sacrifices and hard work. Instead of railing against the new rule, I would love to see changes made that allows more skaters to get paid and make a living off of their life's work. Hey! I’m a beginner figure skater, however I have been using rentals for 2 months in my group lessons. I’ve brought up a few times it is probably about time to get my own pair of skates and get measurements done. Since the rentals just are simply not working for me at all. However I’m super anxious about getting a correct pair of skates for me and my level. While still being affordable. I have brought up to parents that it would also be best to go to a professional for measurements and buying skates but the only skate shops are quite far away. 3 hours at least. Plus the cost of good skates. My parents think it would be best to just go to the skate rinks shop, if I get my own skates at all. But I’ve heard that might not be the best option. And to go to a professional that specializes in figure skates. I’m not sure what to do at all. If anyone has any tips, feel free to let me know!!

Someone needs to make record companies illegal or make it so it's not legal for them to hold copyrights or enforce them in certain situations. I am literally so sick of every facet of life being RUINED by these people. It doesn't even have a public benefit.

In most cases, the owner of the work is not the record company. Rather, the artists are usually the owners. Do you think they should not receive payment for what they created when you use it for your benefit?
@rocketpsyence
@rocketpsyence 26 күн бұрын
I think fair use should be expanded to included when enforcement of copyright law would encroach on expression in a way that's disproportionate to the amount of profit gained. I'm saying this as someone who HAS copyrighted music many times with money from my own pocket. I think it's completely fair to have people use something that's ultimately for public enrichment - especially if the people using it aren't MAKING MONEY from it, as most adult skaters like me aren't. It puts an unfair burden on regular people that provides negligible, if any, noticeable benefit to an artist. Also it's not necessarily ALWAYS the artists going after people, it is often companies and notoriously many times even artists themselves get copyright strikes for using their own music on their own channels. I would care more if this wasn't 100% about corporations wanting to have control over every facet of people's lives and milking them for all they're worth. That's the issue for me. I would be more than happy to pay an additional fee to USFS to keep freedom and keep corporations off our backs to be honest, though I think it's ridiculous. Personally, I don't think copyrights make any sense to enforce unless someone is making money by claiming your work as theirs. This may be a way I differ ideologically with many people, but I don't think Taylor Swift is going to starve because someone uses two minutes of her song at a competition, the same way Walmart isn't going to go bankrupt if they unlock their dumpsters and let unhoused people look for usable food in them. I mean....For the artists who do have the resources to ruthlessly brutalize people over copyrights, every penny they "lose out" on they have absolutely already stolen from the people by dodging taxes and/or relying on labor exploitation or harming the environment irreversibly. If anything, they should be GIVING BACK.
@rocketpsyence
@rocketpsyence 26 күн бұрын
Also not to mention that like...I ALREADY PAY when I use a song. Usually twice because I pay for a digital version of a song in addition to owning an album. I think that's more than enough times to make up for the one time I play half a song at a performance. It just gets to be ridiculous. Big media is the only thing like this. If I go buy a shirt at Walmart, I don't have to negotiate a licensing contract to wear it outside.

Another very illegal thing that happens every day in figure skating is selling the service of cutting and re-arranging music to fit time requirements or use multiple songs. This is totally BS. There is nothing that says you cannot arrange or edit music for accompaniment of skating programs. Fair Use doctrine allows for limited use of music, particularly for non-commercial purposes. The person arranging the music is not performing or distributing music in any way that infringes on the rights holder's rights. There is nothing illegal in editing and/or arranging accompaniment for a skating competition performance. Copyright law does make provisions for this purpose. The purpose of the music is not for performance of the music, it's for the performance of the skater.
25 күн бұрын
Actually, there is a federal law that says you cannot arrange or edit music. It even applies to public schools! Fair use legally cannot apply to performances for recreation or entertainment for _ any part_ of the audience. Ultimately, and unfortunately, relying on fair use as a defense is risky,

Thanks for this. People were angry about this on the figure skating Reddit and I tried to explain the law to them and was furiously downvoted… just because it’s relatively unknown and unintuitive doesn’t mean it hasn’t always been there. The law just was not being properly enforced and people were getting away with it. It isn’t as simple as the organization buying blanket licenses to allow video recording and sales… the videographers are often independent contractors and not employees of USFS (at least at local events where people would be buying videos of their kid.) I’m not saying the law is without fault but copyright law extends farther than most realize… USFS is just trying to protect their clubs and members.
26 күн бұрын
You're welcome! I think U.S. Figure Skating could have provided more resources and education leading into this. Unforuntaly, to my knowledge, there is no such thing as a blanket license for streaming or recording - that's a different license and it can't be blanketed the way a performance license is.

What they are failing to understand is that this use is NOT a performance of the music, it's a skating performance using the music as accompaniment. This use should fall squarely within the Fair Use doctrine.

A skating performance is governed by performance licensing under the law. Legally, it is not fair use.

It does! There's nothing to stop skaters from using a tone or drone like sound and skating to that!

What about a metronome for ice dance? There is that rule about requiring music to fit the character of the dance, though.

@@danasuperstar I think it may be time to make "protest" the character 😂

I'm all for artists being paid, especially where money is being made. But this is extreme (it sounds like I can't even practice to a song I like without paying royalties), and I find it interesting that ISU doesn't apparently have anything like this policy. Nor does ISI. It's just USFSA.

It's actually a federal law in the United States. So, it doesn't actually have to be an organization's policy for it to apply. However, U.S. Figure Skating decided to take an official stance so that all members know their responsibility under the law regarding copyright and music clearance. USA Cheer has done a great job with its member education and resources. You can see what they do here: usacheer.org/music

And life gets more complicated. I was wondering when this copyright stuff would start coming down. Everybody wants as much money as possible. Use it......pay for it. It never ends.

It was only a matter of time. I was talking with another coach a year or two ago and she was asking about this specifically. I remember saying that I think we're going to see something like this happen. Although, as I imagined it, it would have been much more organized and better prepared everyone!

What about a business who edit music for skaters? Is the same thing happening in Canada with Skate Canada & Socan (Canadian version of BMI & ASCAP)? I was an adult skater, still a music editor, singer songwriter who is a member of Socan. So can use to look the other way in Canada for Skate Canada skaters prior to 2020. As of now, I have no idea what is going on in Canada music licensing wise for figure skating. The last year I edited figure music was early 2020.

USA Cheer provides its members with a list of approved providers that have pledging to follow copyright law when editing, creating, arranging, icensing, publishing or distributing compositions, recordings, or music productions. I think that is a great solution and U.S. Figure Skating could have had that in place before making the announcement. You can view USA Cheer's music resources here: usacheer.org/music

IDK how Skate Canada is handling this.

What are your recommendations if the song you're skating to is not in Click and Clear's database? They have a request section on their page, but I am wondering if there's any other avenues I can pursue getting permission? Thanks!
27 күн бұрын
You can contact the rights holder directly. However, usually an agent does that on your behalf. That's the role that ClickNClear has.

What if a song is 20% on BMI and 78.76% on ASCAP--- combined total of 98.76% and ClickNClear does not have it in their database. What is the fastest way to get the 1.24% so that a skater can use it?
27 күн бұрын
As I understand it, you would have to obtain permission from the other 1.24% of the right holders. If you need assistance, please reach out to [email protected].

@@miss-melody-tan USFS is not going to be policing each and every skater's song used at a local competition. This policy basically means that if there is a law suit for you using that song, they won't provide support legally. You're responsible. So use it at your own risk.

I'm sure broadcast feeds on NBC, the Olympic Channel, USA, Peacock, etc., will still have music. This seems to be targeted at smaller competitions that are not broadcast not through a network.
