The excavations didn’t start back at the 80s. The politicians said many times that the excavations will start (1979, 1989, 1996, 2005 etc) but the excavations started at 2008-09. It took them 16 years to dig, for 4 main reasons: 1)some people pocket the money 2)they found much more ancient artifacts than they expected 3)the ground of Thessaloniki wasn’t easy 4)the communists and other leftists delayed the excavations for political reasons

Unfortunately, this small Metro is a showcase project for the city and will not contribute to economic and tourist development because it does not connect the industrial area with working-class neighborhoods, the railway station with the port, the intercity bus station, the airport and the picturesque fishing villages opposite the city.

The prime minister was at the depot to inaugurate the metro system. The speaches overran a bit and they only opened the station entrance gates when he hit the button to send the first train onto the system. It's a nice metro system and I hope it helps to take cars out of the city.

ChatGPT says that the "weeping eyes" graffiti in Kavala, Greece, is a prominent feature of the city's street art, created by an artist known as Diro. Often painted in various locations such as walls, doors, and buildings, these eyes have become a symbolic and recognisable part of the urban landscape. They evoke a sense of mystery and connection as they appear to "watch" passers-by, sparking curiosity and interpretation among residents and visitors. While specific interpretations vary, such art invites reflections on surveillance, empathy, and social commentary. The eyes have become an informal emblem of Kavala’s street art identity, representing both the creativity of its community and the evolving narrative of the city's visual culture.

@hopintomyboots Metro line 2 will travel next november to the "Mikra" station. The extension to the airport will happen later. However there will be shuttle buses to the airport. "Nea Elvetia" the eastern end station of line 1 has now a X2 Bus to the airport. Both lines therefore have buses to the airport. Airport bus to KTEL Macedonia (01X and 01N) are also at the airport.

@yanni2737 2 күн бұрын
@@Squid-i7qthat makes zero sense. Remove the metro from any major high density city and you need to find the extra space to accommodate hundreds of thousands of vehicles. Also buses don't increase capacity just use the current available. Buses would only work in US low density cities, not in Europe where the density is much higher so the ridership, as an example just 2 lines of the Athens metro (line 2 and 3) have a ridership of around a million per day, compared with the Los Angeles metro (a city much larger than Athens) that gets the same ridership in a week.

@yanni2737
@yanni2737 2 күн бұрын
@@Squid-i7q where you get these from? The estimate for the Athens traffic without the metro is an increase of about 40% (you only need to visit Athens when there is a metro strike to see the difference). Also I am not sure how would politicians make money out of building the metro, as the vast majority of the construction funds comes from the European Investment bank and the European Regional development fund.

The archaeologists delayed the project countless times, not always expressing genuine concerns, just complaining and blocking everything. The Venizelou station alone delayed the delivery of the whole project for over a year. Lots of discussions, debates and fruitless arguments, on issues like whether the items should be removed or not. Finally it was decided to remove them temporarily, build the station and position them back upon completion. They still... weren't satisfied, characterizing the procedure as a "crime". The case even had to be fought under courts. Finally it's over fortunately.

They drilled 9.5km in 38 years, which amounts to 20meters per month. Talk about corruption. The so called Archaelogists who as the govt claims delayed things (which were probably govt party's minions represented by an installed corrupt loser, which means it's the govt doing things and you believe the lies) in fact gained aswell from such actions, since they pretended to work while getting paid (if it's true). They could've bypassed the ancient ruins if that was the case, and i doubt there's too many of these along the 9.5km line.
