I've watched this in a loop. It is amazing to watch steel yield to attitude. Steel is strong stuff, but attitude is, as you make it appear, even stronger. Even the rivet end rounding is a work of art, and the dynamic leg cross bracing the rivet head, poetry in motion. I don't know what I'll do with a hand riveted steam boiler but I want one!

@@afs5609 How the heck is the circular flange on the tube plate formed? Is it heated and dressed around a circular dolly by hand or is there a magical incantation that causes it to self-form?
@afs5609
@afs5609 Ай бұрын
@@itsabitovahill873 the first way you described is the normal way it has been done that way for the last hundred years or another way is to first cut out a circular plate. then roll a strip of steel to form a ring then weld the ring to the plate, of course you need to prep the welded area & the person welding needs to be a certified pressure vessel welder.

It seems like what we need to do is remove the asphalt pavement that covers up the tram tracks that are still here, that were wisely set in concrete to protect them from vandalism. Then we need to build about three hundred new trams like the ones that were burned at paddington, and to string up the overhead wires like before, and then we are back in business.

@@eggs_trains no, the property was sold to a land developer by the owner, who had inherited the railway/property from the original owner, who had been one of the group of three that created the railway back in 1970, unfortunately I was the only one left of that group when the current owner decided to sell the property, he had also expressed the view he had no intention of rebuilding the railway on another property he was intending to purchase with the money from the sale.

Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. I was not fortunate enough to see Brisbane with the trams running. My dad and I planned a trip there back in 1968, but it never eventuated. For quite some years during the early 1960's, Brisbane had Australia's newest trams with the Phoenix cars. It was quite a shock, when they suddenly decided to scrap them. Maybe one day, trams may return there as modern light rail, like in the Gold Coast. We can always hope, I suppose.

@afs5609
@afs5609 Жыл бұрын
none of the above, two of the original three members who started the railway in 1970 had passed away,(1997 2006) yours truely was the third member, one of the deceased members owned the property, he passed it on through his will to the youngest member, fifteen years later he decided to sell the property, as his interest in the railway had diminished to another interest of steam traction engines, the other reasons to sell was the money offered for the property & the area was ongoing redevelopment that would have increased the local council property rates. I removed my rail equipment along with another member, relocated to another friends property to start again along side two other existing railways, one 7 1/4 & the other 2ft gauge.
