I would never guessed she was built in 1973. Some of the newer ones look like they are that old, old rusties. lol

some of the freighters I've notice are what i call company favorites the ship company will take care of and cherish one freighter while some of the others in there fleet could be the same age but complete rust buckets cause the company doesn't want to invest much into taking care of them.

why do American or Canadian companies still use very old ships plying the Great Lakes?
@Greatlakesshipdude101
@Greatlakesshipdude101 4 ай бұрын
Because they have no reason to scrap them also old lake ships are scrapped all the time
@TheUnflushedToilet
@TheUnflushedToilet Ай бұрын
Because fresh water doesn't corrode the hulls like salt water, the ship may look back with the paint chipping, but it's most likely in better condition than a 20 year old salt water ship.

Yup! I believe the oldest freighters/barges in service goes as follows, St. Marys Challenger (1906) J.A.W. Iglehart (1936) St. Marys Conquest (1937) Pere Marquette 41 (1941) Alpena (1942) Lee A. Tregurtha (1942) Cuyahoga (1943) Wilfred Sykes (1949) (Others) CTC No. 1 (1943) - Currently awaiting scrapping. Joseph H. Thompson (1944) - Scrapped 2023. McKee Sons (1945) - Layed-up since 2012, it failed it's haul inspection and needs a major overhaul in order to operate.
