From what I see of Pakistan (haven't been, yet), the overwhelming majority of people are warm, generous, fundamentally decent, and take their faith very seriously. Unfortunately, there's a small minority who're brainwashed by extremism and who make life very difficult for both their countrymen and, occasionally, the world at large. The media tends to amplify the significance of the latter group, and makes it seem as though they're far more popular and influential than they actually are. It's unfair, but fear and tragedy sell. Every foreigner that's actually been to the country seems to speak very highly of Pakistan and its people. Most seem to be blown away by the generosity, which they say is unlike anything they've ever experienced anywhere else. I couldn't imagine an unrelated westerner refusing to take my money in exchange for goods or services, but this regularly happens to those visiting Pakistan. Of course, Pakistan has its problems. The economy isn't doing great, corruption's a serious issue, and a military junta is currently making every substantive decision that'll determine the country's future. Furthermore, extremism does exist for those unlucky enough to find it; it's foolish to deny this fact or attempt to wish it away. But the whole world has more than its share of problems, including, if not especially, "safe" "first-world" countries. Many of our economies are messes, our corruption has infiltrated the entire globe, and anyone who denies that we have powerful unelected people calling most of the shots is either an idiot or willfully ignorant. And, of course, we very much have our own flavors of extremism, too. But if we believe our countrys' merits outweigh their problems, we ought to apply the same standards to Pakistan. By avoiding this country, you're robbing yourself of the opportunity to see some beautiful sights and meet some wonderful people. I know I'd go if given the opportunity, and urge anyone with the necessary time, money, and curiosity to ignore the fearmongering and go visit.
