Wow perfect timing I just finished training today and got one hour, in of actually being a courtesy clerk. The job is pretty easy. But I think if you had any type of social anxiety, it would be practically hell for you.

@@GrapevineGod Agreed. You definitely have to interact with customers and even coworkers somewhat often in this position. When I started, I was a super shy girl who hated talked to anybody. This job really helped me develop my social skills and learn not to be afraid to talk to people. Becoming a cashier took that to a whole other level, lol. Now I work at night when no one is around and I can just listen to music/podcasts all night without being disturbed, but I’m still thankful for the social skills the first few positions at the store taught me! I hope you continue to enjoy your new job!!

Back then, my store was only paying $7.25/hour. It really depends on where you are going to be working and how much they’ll be paying you + how many hours you’ll be getting! Best of luck at your new job 🙏🏻

Ours has always been like that too, but it definitely got worse during and ever since Covid. I was lucky enough to work in the late evening back in the day (like in the video), and it was never too busy at that hour. Day time was always a mess with only 1-2 cashiers and loooong lines of angry customers.

You might be able to manage it! You would just need to be able to help the occasional customer locate an item, the bathroom, etc. Best of luck!

I feel like I’ve heard it at times, so maybe it is a choice someone makes whether to have it on or not. I’ve definitely heard it recently at other Safeway locations! There also used to be a couple flashing lights, like lightning, that went with it 😭

​@@pumpkinchai I do not work for Safeway nor am I affiliated with them in any form. The information I got was from the internet and the misting system manufacturer, KES Science and Technology, themselves who had a big contract with Safeway and first introduced the thunder sounds, the volume of the sound card (Small box that contains a memory chip where the thunder sound is actually stored) on the system is adjustable and can be muted, I also heard that the technology has existed for at least 25 years, and many of the Safeway stores built in the late 90s and early 2000s have older systems with aging sound cards that are broken. Some of the stores have had their sound cards replaced with newer ones. But I think that the managers just say no and leave it as is or just throw the Speakers and sound card in the trash. But the newest stores have newer sound cards and therefore most of them play the thunder sound effect. In Arizona, all of the stores I went to when I was little had Thunder, most of them still have it but a few don’t, and some use a different thunder sound now because they now use another manufacturer’s system, compared to the original Misty Tunes thunder sound by KES Science. @@pumpkinchai Your Welcome and, sorry to hear that. Let’s hope not. No one works more than 8 hours here. We have been hiring new people so, there’s that too. I am only part time. Been getting 4 hour shifts recently, I guess because of more people. Apparently some get a 3 hour shift, that’s extremely rare, unheard of really.

@@CM09575 Wow, we’re not allowed to go under 4 hours because of the union here. I wonder if the reasoning is (usually) the same there? I hope you don’t ever stop down to under 4 hours because that hardly seems worth coming in for at that point 😭

@@pumpkinchai I know. The shortest shift is 4 hours and the longest is 8. I don’t know how only a couple people are getting 3. Ya, but we have a Union, so you have to join and pay the fees when starting and, since I have been there for three years now, I have been only paying the small fee since I payed all the big fees when starting. You guys, us, Pavillions (small Vons I think), and Albertsons are all sister stores and Safeway’s are more country wide I believe, more heard of but, not heard of here really in the Western states.

It has been okay. The new managers finally seem to be getting into the swing of things but there are still hiccups such as me taking a week long vacation and then coming back to no paycheck because they did not actually enter the vacation days into the system. That was no fun because I did not budget to make $0 that week 🥹

I don’t know too much about them, as we only really have a head of that department and no clerks. I would assume the GMCs tend to the aisles with the health/beauty products and keep them looking nice throughout the day until the head of the department comes in to do their part. It should be a fairly fun and simple job. Let me know if you go for it and how it goes if you end up getting it! Good luck 🤞🏼🍀

Congratulations! I hope your first day goes well 🥳🙏🏻 To be honest, what your manager is saying definitely makes sense. There are a few routine things you’ll have to check up on (bathrooms, trash, carts, go backs, spills on the floor, etc) but once you’ve checked on all those, you’re kind of free to roam around and find your own work. I miss having that freedom! (I’m now a cashier so I’m stuck up front with one very clear cut job to do). I hope you enjoy it. There are definitely idiot customers and terrible managers who take advantage of the workers at times, but it’s not a bad first job for high schoolers or part time job while in college, etc. The hours are pretty flexible and under the right management it’s actually quite relaxed and easy money.

@@pumpkinchai I know. I work for Fry's food out here in Tucson. It's owned by Kroger. My health insurance is really good. 5 dollars a week. Which is why I'm sticking it out until the current contract expires in a couple of years. Just last week our assistant front end manager just quit and walked out. Fry's is owned by Kroger so it's umbrella companies are run the same exact way. Constant call outs and short-staffed and now 2 hourly front end managers are going to panel for the position of the one manager who quit. Every 5 months or so we get like 5 or 6 different managers in, and they transfer the existing managers out to different stores. They have this rotation of upper level management.

I was also sticking it out here in hopes of getting the health insurance because it is a similarly low price and has amazing coverage...sadly I didn't qualify and ended up having to get private insurance, so I've been torturing myself by working here for years for nothing. I am glad you were able to get yours and I hope you are able to keep sticking it out for the next few years until the contract expires! We are dealing with the same issues over here. Short-staffed to start and then people calling out left and right on top of it...what a disaster! I am almost always the only employee out on the floor in the evenings (it's just me and the night manager!)...it's wild. We have also been having management in and out the door so often that I don't even know the current/new AM's name. Good luck to you and me both! I hope things settle down a little bit, but I doubt they will. Haha

@@pumpkinchai what store are you at? If you have worked at least 1 year you should be able to get the insurance.

@@pumpkinchai if you average like 20 hours a week you should qualify for insurance. If you are in the Union and working for a Kroger affiliated store.

Haha, I totally understand why you didn’t want to choose the bakery or cashier positions (I personally can’t bake to save my life, lol). I have not seen any other female courtesy clerks besides myself and my former coworker from this video, so I have to say no, they’re not very common. I hope you enjoy the job, though! For me, it was able to be fun and enjoyable, and actually might be the best position I’ve had within the store out of all the ones I’ve tried (produce, cashier, file maintenance, bakery, meat, and floral). I checked my application status and it said moved. I’m guessing that means that it’s still being reviewed at the moment.

@@pumpkinchai Thank u! and I did! Unfortunately I didn’t get courtesy clerk as my position. I started as clicklist instead. I struggled a bit with it though therefore I was switched into commercial bakery and produce which is what I’m doing at the moment! Commercial bakery is basically organizing the bread on the shelves and marking down soon to be expired products. Very easy and chill. Produce is also great. I never feel rushed and I can work at my own pace.

I work for Jewel as a cashier. I’ve got to say, I really enjoy my job. I just love providing customer service for people. I have opened many times too. The drawback is getting up at 5:15 in the morning, but at least you get to go home early
