Anyone have any interest in a video like this (but more serious) for any of the other positions or departments at Safeway? Since this was filmed, I've worked in Produce, File Maintenance, and as Cashier. This was filmed as a joke, but I'm glad to see that it's actually helped quite a few of you learn more about the job before applying. Let me know if this sounds interesting, and if it does, topics you would want covered, etc. I will work on it! - Ilona

I have a question if your not a people person what would be best to work as like in a grocery store a courtesy clerk??
@pumpkinchai4 жыл бұрын
Annalyss Azua Yes! Courtesy clerk is great because you can keep busy with more tasks that are in the back such as cleaning the bathroom, break room etc., as well as tasks that are outdoors (trash and carts) and away from the hustle and bustle of the store. When I was a CC I hardly had to interact with the customers. If your store has sanitisation clerks, that’s better because they do nothing but clean things - no one will bother you about doing other tasks. Good luck!

Blech. I’ve been working as a courtesy clerk since late September, and frankly I hate it hehe. I’ve never been a people person, and certain sensory problems make it hard to push carts (I’ve gotten used to the carts themselves, but whenever a low-flying plane goes by or a motorcycle adds to the noise I could just cry.) But hey, college isn’t going to pay for itself eh? Gotta make money SOMEHOW.

'I think it really depends on the people. If there's cool people it's a cool job.' That's quite possibly true, and the inverse is definitely true. If there's rude, angry, self-righteous, self-entitled people, it's a crappy job, figuratively and sometimes literally. I can't say I miss scrubbing feces out from the bathroom baseboards, toilet paper dispensers, and sinks, nor do I miss being told 'I peed on the walls, and you women need to clean it up for your male superiors' followed by the usual line that 'the customer is always right'. Of course, it all depends on where you work, the company's policies and general atmosphere, and the sort of people who live in and shop in your general area. People really do make all the difference. Of course, every job has its good points and bad points. I'm just happy you get to see more good than bad where you are. BTW, I thought you looked familiar at first, but then I realized where the store was (from the part where you were outside - no details, as I respect your wish to not have stalkers) and which store it was. Yup, your store's location is better than mine. Keep up the good work there. 😊

Very True we are the important ones of the retail stores that does rounds around the stores doing the sweep, trash pulls, the spills and most importantly taking care of the customers. What makes my job so much fun is that I am not stationary for more than 10 mins at the most running around doing random tasks and I have so much freedom that I get to know and interact everybody from all different departments and have a quick conversation with a laugh or a joke or sometimes prank them which makes me feel like a family environment. But unfortunately after working 6 yrs at Farm Fresh supermarkets, we are shutting down all 38 stores as Supervalu sold them split among the buyers of Kroger, Harris Teeter and Food Lion. We already started liquidation, so when everything is gone we close down, all the liquidation closing and mark down signs make the store look depressing. It won't be easy hitting the reset button finding another place of employment and relearn everything with new people etc.

My first job was being a curtsey clerk (still is, but not for long) and I enjoyed working inside bagging, self check etc. but then there were days where they made me restock carriages for my whole entire shift. And these days weren’t rare they would be often to the point where my main job was to be a full time carriage guy where I would spend 4-5 hours of my entire shift constantly hauling in carriages with no help all by myself in the freezing cold and snow (I live in New England btw). As a result I simply asked if I could work inside more versus outside since I would keep getting nose bleeds from working in the extreme temperatures. Once I asked that my manger took offense and stated “we hired you to do carriages THIS IS YOUR JOB” and proceeded to state I was complaining. I was shocked since I thought my job would be mostly inside versus being outside since they have designated people to do carriages yet they schedule me to be the only carriage guy for that day. After continuous days of nosebleeds from my job I see a nose doctor to find out my blood vessel was damaged from it. After the rude response from my manager/boss and not enjoying just pushing carriages I decided to quit. What’s unfortunate about my situation is that I only worked 3 weeks and that I quit in a short time. However, i initially applied to be a stocker which is what the Hiring manger told me I was going to do. Yet when I brought in my working papers, he changed my position from stocking shelves to bagging/carriages. And stated I would do this to “start off”. In general the job is great when your inside which is what I expected to do, but I’ve been working outside more than inside so I quit.

management in the end is the sole culprit of how being a courtesy clerk feels like, and why it’s such an opinionated job, i’ve seen it happen myself
@pumpkinchai3 жыл бұрын
Wow, that’s terrible! I’m so sorry they did that to you. I see them doing something similar here, where they are making the CCs do other jobs that they should be getting paid more to do....it’s so unfair to those CCs to do that! I’m glad you quit since they were ignoring your issues related to the cold & nose bleeds. It’s ridiculous that they changed your position from what you applied for to being a CC “to start.” I would’ve called HR first and complained to them instead of quitting, but I know in places like grocery stores, HR isn’t always the most helpful. I hope you find something better for you and something well managed!!

I can relate to thinking I will be stocking but starting off you will be a clerk cleaning, go backs, bagging, fetching shopping carts and the stocking thing doesn't happen. Accurate that coworkers and managers make a difference whether you enjoy work or not.

@pumpkinchai4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Yep, that's pretty much everything as far as responsibilities go. Let me see if I can think of anything else.... Back in the day there was something called the 'sweep log' that we had to keep up with every 30 minutes (seen around 02:33 in the video). Basically, you walk the store and make sure there's no spills or other hazards on the floor, and then go to the time clock where you clock in/out and you have to sign in for every section of the sweep log. If you need to do this, I'm sure someone will show you how to do that. Most people find it annoying, but I always thought it was fun and I liked to see how quickly I could punch in my employee ID without messing it up (if you mess up, it won't be counted). I still to this day help with the sweep log when I have the time, because it's just so fun! Haha. There also used to be a log for the bathrooms, and I believe that is still a thing (though it's just a piece of paper you initial every 30 minutes) - 0:46 in the video. These days with the coronavirus, they sometimes require the CCs to do more tedious cleaning such as sanitising every cart and hand basket.... hopefully you will not have to do that, though. Most stores have hired more employees whose only job is to do all the CDC-mandated cleaning. Best of luck! Let us know how your first day goes =] - Ilona

I’m gonna apply for this, but how do you know when to do your work? Like bagging, or collecting shopping cars? Or even clean.
@pumpkinchai6 жыл бұрын
Great question! Bagging: they will call you over the loudspeakers whenever the store gets busy and they need your help. They will also call you up there if a customer needs assistance taking their bags to their car. Shopping carts: You will just have to glance outside every hour or so and see how many are out in the parking lot. They might give you a guideline (i.e: no more than 20 carts out at a time), or they might leave it up to you. As long as carts are near the entrance and available to customers, you shouldn't have a problem. Cleaning: Cleaning is the only thing that has a pretty set schedule. At my store, we had to monitor the floors to see if there were any spills, loose items, trash, etc & complete what was called the "sweep log." The bathrooms also had a log, and were to be cleaned/checked once an hour. As you are putting returned items (also known as "go backs") in their correct places, you should pick up and trash that you might see. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions, and if you get the job!

@@pumpkinchai I do not work for Safeway nor am I affiliated with them in any form. The information I got was from the internet and the misting system manufacturer, KES Science and Technology, themselves who had a big contract with Safeway and first introduced the thunder sounds, the volume of the sound card (Small box that contains a memory chip where the thunder sound is actually stored) on the system is adjustable and can be muted, I also heard that the technology has existed for at least 25 years, and many of the Safeway stores built in the late 90s and early 2000s have older systems with aging sound cards that are broken. Some of the stores have had their sound cards replaced with newer ones. But I think that the managers just say no and leave it as is or just throw the Speakers and sound card in the trash. But the newest stores have newer sound cards and therefore most of them play the thunder sound effect. In Arizona, all of the stores I went to when I was little had Thunder, most of them still have it but a few don’t, and some use a different thunder sound now because they now use another manufacturer’s system, compared to the original Misty Tunes thunder sound by KES Science. I have a web link to the old website for KES Science and it explains how the thunder sounds worked, the sound effects on the site do not work, however. web.archive.org/web/19981202212152/www.kesmist.com:80/thunder.htm

It used to be! This was filmed about seven years ago at this point, haha. I believe they changed the uniform to black and/or white polos in 2015, and then eventually changed it to any black shirt with a collar. They recently changed it again to include a few other colours, as well as a few different options for pants. Aprons are not required anymore, either!
@FireAlarmTech7.3 жыл бұрын
I figured that was the case. The old uniform must have been from the Lifestyle era that Safeway had back in the day before being acquired by Albertsons.

I work at a Vons. My first job, I will be 22 in September. Been for three years almost. Since September 2019. Curious if there where any vids about it. Basically, there is not a fixed schedule, so they can have you work any hours that the store is open. You can have the smallest shift at four hours up to the longest shift at eight hours. I have started at the earliest at six something in the morning and have worked the latest till twelve something at night, only done the closing shift once. Mostly I would start the earliest at 8 something in the morning and get afternoon and evening shifts. Basically what we do, in slightly a different way. We do a lot more than what people think. We just don’t do carts and sweeps, clean up messes and help people out to their car. This position starts as early as sixteen but, working in other departments (like Deli, Produce, Meat, Bakery, maybe Floral too) need to be at least eighteen.

@@CM09575 Wow, we’re not allowed to go under 4 hours because of the union here. I wonder if the reasoning is (usually) the same there? I hope you don’t ever stop down to under 4 hours because that hardly seems worth coming in for at that point 😭

@@pumpkinchai I know. The shortest shift is 4 hours and the longest is 8. I don’t know how only a couple people are getting 3. I start my first day soon and all I’m confused on is how do you know when to do carts or when to bag? Does someone tell you to go get carts or do you just do one of the courtesy jobs whenever?
@pumpkinchai3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the store and how it’s managed, but it can be either: 1. It’s up to you to check on carts, trash, etc from time to time and get them cleaned up as needed OR 2. They tell you every __ minutes to go outside and check (or send you when they notice things getting messy) As for bagging, they only seem to ask you to do that when things are very busy. Back in the day, I would be asked to bag whenever I had no other tasks to do, or whenever there were big lines and/or few cashiers. Now it seems that we do no have courtesy clerks bagging EVER. They just wander about, aimlessly… It really depends on the store and manager(s) on duty. Good luck!

So I applied at Ralph’s not that long ago and was asked to pick two positions on their application. I picked both produce and courtesy clerk. I wanted to be a stocker, but they didn’t seem to have that as an option. I didn’t want to be a cashier because I’m slow when it comes to counting money. They also had deli and bakery. Being a bakery clerk seemed interesting but at my location you have to know how to bake cakes. I’m not the best when it comes to baking cakes, so that wasn’t an option either. I wouldn’t want to risk burning a cake in the oven 😭. After going back and forth, I just put down courtesy clerk as my second option. Is the job really as bad as people make it out to be? Also are female courtesy clerks common? This will be my first job and I’m already freaking out.

What are three other items you would suggest they get?” and “pick your favourite item in the store and try to sell it to me”) I remember my answer to the second question not being the greatest, but as long as you’re nice and seem competent, I’m sure they’d love to have you! =]

The interview shouldn't be anything too crazy, so don't worry or be too nervous going into it. When I first interviewed, they used to ask questions to see how one might do as a Courtesy Clerk, such as: "If a customer asked for an item that's out of stock, what would you do/say?" They would love to hear an answer that shows customer service skills, so something like "We don't have any ____, but might I suggest ______, which is a similar item?" would be much better than simply "The item is out of stock." @pumpkinchai7 жыл бұрын
Sabrina xoxo Yep, it's supposed to be a part of the uniform at all times!! Though... I filmed this a few years ago, and it seems the uniforms have been upgraded since then and no one wears an apron (that I've seen, at least)?? I know we used to wear them to keep things we needed handy (i.e: trash bags, box cutters, etc). Thanks for watching and commenting!! 😊
@calebwilliams95477 жыл бұрын
At least at our store you can replace it with a safety vest, (which I prefer) but if you're a good enough employee they typically won't mess with you about it.

Nope, not hard! Basically you just have a checklist of duties you have to do/check on about once an hour. It can be a lot of fun if you get everything done and then have free time to kill instead of letting it all pile up. Best of luck!! 😁

Hi, what do courtesy clerks do when it comes to cleaning the bathrooms?
@pumpkinchai3 жыл бұрын
Hello! It depends on the store and how it’s managed, but at my store we had to check the bathrooms every 30 minutes to make sure everything was properly stocked (toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc) and maybe mop the floors once a day if they were starting to look dirty at all. Not too much at all, as long as all goes well. The worst part was whenever we had to deal with clogged or overflowing toilets 🤢🚽

trevcon 3 lol, is it the same kind of apron as in this video??? If so, you just put your head through the head hole and tie the straps either behind your back, or wrap them around your back and bring them back to the front and the them there (if the straps are way too long for your waist size). Hope this helps! 😂

@pumpkinchai4 жыл бұрын
I hope the interview went well! I also have anxiety, social anxiety in particular. Being a courtesy clerk is nice because most of the time you are doing your own tasks and don't have to be around people consistently. You do have to interact with customers when they ask questions, as well as when you are bagging their groceries or helping them out to their cars. Thankfully, a majority of your tasks are solo missions (i.e: trash, carts, cleaning the bathrooms, putting items back on the shelves, etc.), so you don't need to speak to people for the majority of your shifts.

@pumpkinchai2 жыл бұрын
@@amyajohnson585 I'm sorry I'm just seeing this comment now somehow! It's probably way too late for this to be useful, but my best suggestions would be 1. courtesy clerk (since it's a very solo job) 2. anything in the departments (produce clerk, bakery clerk, etc - because you have to interact with people less often than a cashier) or if possible 3. night stocker // day stocker (night stocker = no one will bother you; day stocker = not too many people will be interrupting you)

The Life of Ro I worked at Safeway last summer. The interview was really short and simple. They asked me why I wanted the job basically. I said I wanted to save for college and said I would be a great clerk because I’m a friendly people person. I smiled a lot and was really polite. They also asked me if someone was coming in to buy a cake what items would you suggest. I said plates and a lighter(for some reason). Then I got hired a couple days later. Don’t worry too much bout the interview. And I’m not sure what the process is like for Kroger but it’s probably similar.
