My father drove in this event, dad (Jim Pilgrim) was a disc jockey at 2CC and his boss (Keith Harris) was navigator in a v6 capri, dad was a competitive speedway racer though it was the first rally for both of them, anyway fun fact or at least a story dad used to tell was that in their confusion they actually hit the mine shaft flat in top gear landing at the bottom, Keith apparently had said “oh bugger look out for the mine shaaaaaaaaft!!” lol and as unbelievable as it sounds they were able to carry on relatively unscathed after a spectator lent them the gearshifter from their street car, which was also a v6 capri. Another fun fact… or as the story went, the spectator was a local Canberra ford dealer and his car was actually a customer’s car he had “borrowed” for the weekend! after the event the “borrowed” part from the “borrowed” car was returned and reinstalled and the actual owner never knew any of it.

The first part of this (to 3:20) is at Jewels Beach, the 1974 Southern Cross. The second part is Mt Sugarloaf and is the 1973 Southern Cross (the wet one). The final part (after 7:00) is the 1975 Southern Cross, Jewels Beach again I think.

Understeer... cars needs more negative camber on the front.
@dattdrift2 ай бұрын
Dont think camber was the issue, Driver jumped on it too early before apex, he had no weight on his front wheels too

If you watched this video from the beginning, you might not realise that Murray Coote and I were always in the front runners in this event. We hardly got a mention until the passing comment at the end to the effect that we came second by just a few seconds. Viewers might think a couple of Queenslanders were just lucky to be there and happened to fall into second place. A great event, great roads, great crews, great organisers.

With hindsight - knowing about them bypassing the turbo restrictor - the speed of the Toyotas _does_ look suspicious.

Tommi Makinen said that year's event is all about experience and the upcoming will be easier was probably the sickest prediction ever! Cause not only that he won the next year's rally, but also his first championship!
