Interesting note is that the whole trilogy is available for free on gog. The game was never really my cup of tea ( and still isn't ) but anyone who was a DOS gamer at the time, going through demo discs and looking for the next game, probably came across this one at some point. So not everyone might have liked it but most people probably knew about it ^^

I never understood how this game worked as a kid back in the 2000s cuz my English was so bad back then, and then as an adult nearing my 30s and with an English linguistics degree, I've tried it again, and I've come to realise that I'm just dumb xD and it has nothing to do with the language at all xDDDD

This is a script collection. It's like the Space Ace. You have to do what the developers wanted you to do. Flashback is a way better game.

Heretic and Hexen came out about the same time, were very similar games, and more or less a similar setting. I never could tell the two apart. One of the two had a giant bell in an open are near the start of the game which you had to ring. To this day, I hve no idea what it did.

The dynamics of the battle are very well done. Why is everything so dark, though? Is it because of the old format the intro was made in, or did they screw up the gamma from the start?

Dunno, all I can say it looks as I remember it ^^ Maybe the scanlines make it seem darker than it is or something.

There is also a fantasy version called Total Annihilation: Kingdoms But maybe you played one of the spiritual successors to the game? Over the years there were quite a few, the earliest in my eyes being: Machines - Wired for War And then after that: Supreme Commander 1 and 2 made by Chris Taylor. And then mostly indie titles like: Planetary Annihilation, Zero-K, Beyond All Reason

Commander + D-Gun = Total Annihilation 🦾 Also the first few maps are just introduction / tutorials and therefore pretty short. So if you want to see a longer mission then go to 07:05
