I thought the cross contour lines to read as going away from you had convex lines, and going towards you was concave lines! crap my entire worldview has changed now haha

the section about making art fun and "throwing down shapes" was really helpful, i've felt my art is too tight and lacks energy bc i'm trying too hard to copy the reference and pay attention to correct proportion and anatomy. i've seen sketchier art like the warrior you drew after, but i struggle to mimic that, bogged down by details and accuracy!

If you aren't adjusting the thirds for perspective and proportion when applying the loomis method then you are doing the method wrong.

Jim Lee in interviews stated that he originally intended on going to medical school and was gifted with Gray's Anatomy book (yes, it's spelled Gray after Henry Gray who wrote the original) which he used as a reference. One thing Jim also mentioned is that he simplifies the anatomy into shortcut shapes and I would go further with Lee's signature poses. This is very evident when you watch him draw and especially his earlier comics like X-Men when he was learning and mastering his craft.

ignore this, self reflecting here you are reminding me of myself when I talk. sometimes I make the mistake of speaking. People say I'm smart, but to me, I sound like someone repeating things I found interesting. The professor here sounds like he's lived, learned, and can properly share something. The interviewer sounds like he wants to make a connection, be impressive, have something to say, idk. As a child I always thought this behaviour was weird and unnecessary. Now though, I have no idea how to stop this or if I should. for one, I hate talking for the sake of talking two, I don't want to be annoying three, art has taught me to just try, to shame myself or others out of this behavior just sounds wrong I think it's a lack of being humble. You don't want to be vulnerable and show your insecurities (flaws), so you pretend to be a peer of the people you speak to. You try to be adult and on their level when instead you should....not sure but humbling yourself is definitely in there. goodbye

At 54, pursuing art I find intention is key. Meditate on the real goal for the peice you are working on and your art career in general. Look at your goals daily. What is still making sense and should you pivot or trash some things?

not a fan of the thumbnail man. the clickbait might be getting more views but i dont like the general aggressiveness or disrespect and don't think that is what we should be adding to the art community, and i dont think it really resonates with how you actually feel about loomis or any of the things necessarily with the thumbnails lately.
@reltcstone24 күн бұрын
yeah, fuck the police. Also as apposed to the do what you need to do and do it badly if you have to and keep doing it till its good mindset, i prefer the do what you need to do to the best of your ability weather its good or not and continue mindset. I think striving high is the important part and not giving up. And being ok with the failures but being able to learn, grow, and adapt from them, and being able to analyze artistic failure in a way where you can learn and grow from it.

I know there are comments that are definitely riled up about the way Loomis and his technique is perceived. Personally, I do understand the criticism on the thumbnail and video, but I also highly agree that Loomis was one method. I've definitely created my techniques by studying other artists, imitating what worked for them, as well as what visual I wanted to present. Good video.

It’s a combination of a bunch of things. A lot of it unrelated to art and a lot of non glamorous work. This past weekend I filmed some videos for a comic artist at comic con. A lot of being creative is finding an income in something non ideal. Slew told me he still will go out and film gigs for other people. The advice I usually get is (which I’m trying to follow) find a job to pay the bills and figure out creative stuff on the side. It’s really difficult to maintain creative work when your survival is based off it’s reception.

As someone who went to art college, art school is still worth considering because you can change your major or continue into a masters degree in another field. And you will always have the experience and social networking you built in art school, and that can be life changing and indispensable. Also, advancements in tech and science come from cross disciplinary exchanges, so having an arts background can be advantageous in many ways one might not expect if you decide to change majors or enter a different field. Many advancements in our society have been made possible due to the arts, in fact modern medicine as we know was made possible due to artists studying human anatomy. But there's nothing wrong with being a self-taught artist, it can be an equally viable and just as indispensable experience. Just my two cents.

The artist who can imitate struggles, the artist who can innovate thrives. There are so many ways to start your portrait but it is with your hand and eye that work becomes interesting. You can draw anything well by removing everything that doesn't fit. It can be that simple. If you draw something similar a few hundred times you will achieve some level of mastery. Who needs a guru? What is needed is inspiration and a work ethic. I'm not anyone's acolyte and that's how I stay original.
