The explanation about how the sails work is wrong. Particles of air do not have "to meet at the end". The air on the top of the wing/sail travels much faster and never meet the same air at the bottom. The faster air has less density than the slower air thus it pushes the wing/sail into the low pressure area.

QUESTION ( raising my hand ) 4:28 into the video, does that mean 1) if i am designing for a single sail i should increase my SA\D ? or 2 ) i just need to design the one sail like it's one sail ? #1 i can do, and #2 i would need a sail specialist...but i have to know if it's #1 because that would affect the mast and rigging.

On my 27’ pocket cruiser my traveler is so small the seller told me to not ever bother with it. Just let out the main sheet to spill off some wind. So I never touch the traveler. Anyone have any insight on this technique?

I have watched 3 video's in this series and have concluded that this is in no way basic instructional for a beginner. There are so many terms being thrown about that I can only conclude you have no recollection of life before you were a proficient sailor. I don't recall hearing or seeing any explanation of these terms. I understand from someone else's basics video that...oh, never mind. I'm so confused now I don't even think I know for sure what the mainsheet does. I think maybe it's used to set the angle of the sail but I will have to double check that. As for a boom vang or traveller? I'm completely lost. I am going to have to watch someone else's basics video that really deals with basics so I understand as much as I thought I did before attempting to further my knowledge with this confusing fast paced mish mash.

This is not beginning dinghy sailing instruction, it is obviously geared for people who sail larger boats, who are interested in becoming more proficient at finer sail handling techniques. Perhaps you look up these basic sail control terms and then re watch. There is a assumed skill level of people who sail on bigger boats (what these videos are clearly pointed toward) already know the five basic controls on a sail.

I fully intend on watching this repeatedly. It’s pretty impressive how you visualize the proper shape of the sails and understand what and how each adjustment affects the shape.

How do you know when the air flows on each side of the sail a vacuum doesn't exist? Its like the air flow on each side of the sail are talking to each other saying: now guys make sure we meet at the same time or else a vacuum will be created!

Ray Harkins one heck of a journey But the shortest way would be down the carabean and though the Panama Canal, but that's the easy part, Now you've got to sail half way across the Pacific Ocean which is the biggest ocean in the world and the last place you would ever want to get lost probably a month and a half to 2 month journey

Agreed. When you can't clearly detect the subtle (at least when on video) changes ostensibly taking place it detracts significantly from the point of having a visual portion to begin with. Put another way, when we can't "see" what you're talking about, it might as well just be an audio file, cassette tape, etc.

All very well in a modern boat, but if you are sailing a classic without vangs/ Cunningham's etc then other means of maintaining speed are vital.
@jolllyroger1
@jolllyroger1 8 жыл бұрын
Vanes Cunningham etc.... Every boat with a sail can be adjusted this same way.... A vang can be rigged on any boat that has a boom its just rigging..... And there are many ways to accomplish the same effect........ A Cunningham's effects can be done with uphaul... But then you must adjust other things... The Cunningham near helps isolate adjustments... It's all in the rigging... If you're boat don't have it you can rig it with lines... A sail has 3 corners and 3 connections at those corners... And ways to tension the luff the leech and the foot... Those three change the shape.... You can in a fractional rig put a bow in the mast affecting sail shape..... Mast rotation controls can affect the sails shape.... Boom travelers for your sheet affect sail shape..... It's all in the rigging You just think the sail has 3 corners you can pull on... You can pull on some in many directions some things allow you to pull along the sides between the 3 corners... Like semen you bend the Mast you pull forward on the sail between the head and tack.. This pulls along the entire luff but but equally due to the fractional setup and Mast design.... So the whole point is if you have triangle sails you can pull on them in many directions to change shape and if you don't have certain things on your boat to do this pulling you can rig it..... Often times with to many available adjustments it is easy for the sailor to kill the sails shape killing speed or power...... While I'm watching this video I see a sail that has a huge drastic exaggerated deep V shape running up from the middle of the foot to the head..... It's hard to tell shape from video but that V has flats fore and aft..... IMHO flats in a sail are inefficient as hell... Now he has the best boat speed of the day which says he is doing something right but I'm certain from that shape the flow over those sails could be improved considerably from what I see in the video.... This aversion to flats comes from my aircraft design experience.... That said though even flat door shaped Wings make lift

@@jolllyroger1 Thank you chief, I wondered about that sail shape myself. Lots of interesting info about adding lines/attachments to change sail shape in your post. I'm thinking of buy a yacht that doesn't have a traveller (very curved roof above companionway) but I'm gunna find a way to add one, or rig something so's I can keep that boom down when running downwind...I reckon it's good to add bits and pieces to fine tune our yachts...Cheerio!

The explanation at 0:48 is total nonsense. "The parted particles have to meet at the other end..." No they don't. They don't meet. And furthermore, the air on both sides travels exactly the same distance. Actually, the air touching the sail doesn't really move at all.

forgive me, I'm new at this, I believe all your saying and sure that is it true but in the case of the norway couple on youtube that used a wind device for auto pilot and just sat back for hours going in the right direction, Im taking it that if you have to go in one direction only you just take what it give you, would this be a fair assessment. Thanks.

This is a nice video series. But, as a "advanced beginner", explaining the sail shape and why and when exactly to use the Cunningham and traveler to adjust the sail twist would be helpful in knowing when and know to adjust rather than just having one's eye on the hull speed and jockeying back and forth. I would be better to have a little more time spent to evaluating the sail depth to decide what needs to be adjusted and why
