The SDP is the sort of solid working class centre-left party the country needs facing off against the more free-market Reform UK, where both agree on common cultural values, national independence, but with different visions for the role of the state, the markets, etc.

I agree the SDP is a better party than Reform at the policy and ideological level. But they are never going to push past reform. All these smaller parties should just join reform and work to change policy direction. Farage won’t be around forever and Thatcherite economics has been largely discredited. Even Farage has changed his tune on certain things. Things are too late in the day in terms of immigration to have all these squabbling patriotic parties

Heaven help us with Lammy being our foreign secretary at a time when the world looks so precarious. I fear for this country with labour at the helm. And 8m furious at the Tories for letting this happen. Taking gifts means someone can get more influence over them. Its a corrupt system. Trump gave his salary to military charities

UK democracy is a big TV gameshow. Instead of candidates, we have celebrity franchise contestants. Cartoonish character trying to out-goof each other on TV. If is that is all you expect from your leaders then that is all you will get.

The public are sick of TV interviewers dominating interviewees. Mr Clouston is not getting the profile he deserves. This was not a discussion - this was 'the thoughts of Chairman Mike' - telling everyone what he thinks & using his interviewee as a visual prop. Without egomaniac media we will never hear excellent new people such as William Clouston.

This is the most intellectually dishonest discussion I’ve heard in a long time. “Was it the best?”..ffs. A tiny bit of research will point you to the harsh reality of what it was like to live under the oppressive British regime. These two dullards are too busy navel gazing over their imperial past to even consider reality. Just look at how they treated their nearest neighbour, Ireland. Happy to see millions die and emigrate to solve the “Irish problem”. As with other counties colonised by Britain, they just took and took as much as they could. Blood money, plain and simple. If you can’t own your past, and be honest about it, you will never learn from it. Sure there were some positives about the British empire, sure other colonizers more violent, but the British oppressed more people for longer than any of their other Imperial peers. The British also refuse to honestly access the reality of mostly negative (aside from the coffers back home) impact their empire had on the world, this is why most people have an issue with the British love for their jingoistic past.

It is imperative that we avoid a major war. The Russians and Chinese have already reconnoitred the undersea cables which surround the UK, the consequences of a hit on these connectors or as Clouston says, a cyber attack, are unthinkable. If the British establishment is determined to press ahead with this you have to conclude they are indifferent to the well-being of our people. The Bank of England are independent of the government. Labour gave that power away in order to prove they weren't "anti business"

"more austerity" Well hang on a minute William, on twitter you were saying the public sector borrowing requirement was rising and the tax base is crumbling so what do you propose to do? We've had 14 years of the mantra that if we didn't "balance the books" investors wouldn't invest. And that's after 45 years of we have to let the "wealth creators" have everything all their own way. What's that resulted in? Successive financial crises and astronomical inequality. The more one observes your output the more one detects the instincts of a Daily Telegraph reader not a social democrat.

We are definitely far more vulnerable than we realize. GPS is the often overlooked as a weak point... EVERYTHING relies on it. Banking, nuclear power stations, indeed many functions of the internet rely on it... as well as many navigation systems of course. If GPS goes down society collapses.

“As for what you say or hint of ‘local’ conditions: I knew of them. I don’t think they have much changed (even for the worse). I used to hear them discussed by my mother; and have ever since taken a special interest in that part of the world. The treatment of colour nearly always horrifies anyone going out from Britain, & not only in South Africa. Unfortunately, not many retain that generous sentiment for long.” (Letter 61 - April 1944). “I know nothing about British or American imperialism in the Far East that does not fill me with regret and disgust.” (Letter 100 - May 1945). Remarking on a wartime photo of the Allied leaders, Tolkien says that “our little cherub,” Winston Churchill, “actually looked the biggest ruffian present,” even as Churchill was sitting next to “that bloodthirsty old murderer Josef Stalin.” Indeed, Tolkien’s real fear is of the “Americo-cosmopolitanism” to come, “when they have introduced American sanitation, morale-pep, feminism, and mass production” throughout the whole world. Would JRR Tolkien be though of as far right by William or Misguided Right

I dislike the SDP, I think you guys are increasingly reactionary. I should be one of your target voters, I think "woke" extremists can be an issue but it doesn´t mean we should take the exact opposite stance. There is nothing to be praised about the British empire, it was a brutal authoritarian system.

It would be good to change the discourse to deflecting the well hammered accusations and asking about other empires of recent times or asking where would the people of previously colonised countries be today if no European had set foot on their soil. How did they used to treat their neighbours, women and children pre colonisation? How was their health? Did they eat well?

That Empire happened in phases with its different attitudes is very important to remember and what was happening around Europe and the world at various times I would add though when you have Western Elites in Europe saying we are the garden the world is a jungle then it is a revealing attitude Or American Elites saying That America is The Indispensable Nation I have major issues with both attitudes and our competitors are using this to there advantage The West does have a Superiority Complex (both on the left and right)

In his book The Anglo-Saxons Marc Morris argues that it was a net benefit for England to be invaded and subjugated by the Normans. The death toll, the suppression of culture, imposition of a new governing class speaking a different language ... ultimately all defensible because the Normans essentially modernised the English and brought them closer to the European mainstream.

Geo-political pressures also played their part in the expansion of empire particularly in relation to the wars with the French throughout the 18th century. If we hadn't colonised those territories the French most certainly would have done with huge consequences for our own safety and security.
