Why did you try to use pliers at first? I just had this problem. After a night and four applications of penetrator and heat mine came out.

I searched youtube for suggestions because I had the same issue with my WR400F and came across this vid. Thanks @Steeezed but looks like you had a rough time and had to use every trick in the book. I removed the rear wheel, loaded the bolts up with WD40 and after a some soaking time hit them with an impact gun with 10mm socket. Both bolts came out with no damage and it took 10 seconds...

Thanks for the video. I just did mine last weekend. This was my second time and thought was easy. The truck started right after the fuel filter change, and then shut off by itself in less than a minute. I tried to restart then the wrench sign came on. I checked the manual and realized I did not do the fuel relief step. I recall removing the filter down next to rail, and I drained 1/4 gallon of diesel. (So it seems a good practice to do fuel filter change with almost empty 1/4 fuel tank. Mine was close to 4/3 full) The water separator dripped and was the first thing I did before the fuel filter change. After a few times trying to turn on, the truck finally ran as it supposed so. Today I drove the truck and the wrench sign came on again. Hmm, don't know how it is triggered and maybe it will go away by itself after some time???

Do you need to be close to empty to do the primary fuel filter? Mine wouldn’t stop draining diesel.
@daveboling84114 жыл бұрын
No, you should be able to change both fuel filters even with a full tank of diesel. This sounds to me like you may have had the Truck key turned on during your fuel filter change, and were trying to listen to the radio or something like that. Shut your truck off completely, pull the key out of the ignition, and let the truck sit for a little while. Once the engine has been off for a little while, any extra pressurized fuel in the system should have returned to the fuel tank. When you start to unscrew the black plastic cap on the high pressure side, (the fuel filter on top of the engine), do it slowly so that any pressure and any excess fuel, (still remaining up inside that Black Cap), can escape and the fuel level should start to go down until much of the fuel in the fuel filter area has drained down. You cannot avoid spilling some diesel but it should be minimal. If you still have fuel filling back into the fuel filter area, you have a problem because it shouldn't be pumping with the engine off and key out. Do not try and listen to the radio while doing a fuel filter change because when the key is on, the low pressure Fuel lift pump, mounted on the frame rail will still be trying to pump fuel. This is such an issue that Ford actually recommends that you unhook the battery cables before doing a Fuel Filter change... Also, if you still have extra fuel coming out while you are changing the filter on the Fuel Lift pump, (the one mounted on the frame rail), you may have something in your fuel lines that is clogging the check valves that prevents fuel from freely flowing in the system, with the pumps off. Last thing, pull the fuel filter straight out when you remove them so you do not damage the posts that protrude from the pumps, up inside each filter. I would not try twisting them out like the video shows. It may not do anything but if you do accidently break off those plastic posts that protrude inside the fuel filters, you will be buying new pumps and they are not cheap. The low pressure pump is around $265.00 and the High Pressure pump is over $1000.00 and those prices are just for the pump themselves. Good luck...!!!

You should have bought a Dodge Cummins. I am on my 3rd 6.4 engine now. Engine quit with only 109,000 miles on it. Ford put new engine in, but by the time I got to the dealership to pick it up the new engine went bad and was smoking. Back into the shop for the 3rd engine. So far everything is ok. But I Don't trust the truck to take it on long trips. Watch your oil dip stick as it will accumulate diesel fuel when engine goes into regen. That is the main killer of these engines.

Just my 2 cents, I’ve found using dielectric grease on O-rings really helps with install & removal of filter caps. Regarding the fuel splashing out of upper filter housing, After I have removed the cap, I will take a small turkey baster syringe and suck out as much fuel possible from the housing, this will eliminate the fuel bath when pushing on new filter. :-)
