轟 is a kanji meaning roar. Interestingly it's made up of three 車, usually read as kuruma and meaning car, but when you look at it like that it looks like Big Man, Shiver and Frye. Roar is also fitting, since they have a kind of delinquent, more rough image than the other two idol groups, so they're generally louder and more in-your-face. Edit: I've just seen someone commented on that, so sorry for double posting. Edit: Actually make that triple posting, I guess.
@DekuGamer9 ай бұрын
Nah you're good. Honestly when people comment the same thing they always add something extra that others didn't mention lol. This is such a cool detail! I like the way you interpreted the symbol to tie into Deep Cut. It seems like they've had the most love and effort put in out of all the idol groups.

The best part about the brands showing up in Mahi-Mahi Resort is that, according to the Splatoon 3 artbook, that map is also a live music venue (not that we actually see it in-game).
@DekuGamer9 ай бұрын
Oh I think there's jellyfishes setting up a concert near a stage on the pool. I don't remember if they do anything special for splat fest though. You make a good point though because I'm trying to see what that live music venue looks like in action lol
@NuiYabuko9 ай бұрын
I think Deep Cut even talk about wanting to perform there or something. Edit: I just had it appear in-game and Frye says something about making it fun if they were headlining there.

8 was also EVERYWHERE in octo expansion. At the end when Pearl screams at tar tar, the turf war bar is maxed out at %888.88!
@DekuGamer9 ай бұрын
That's right! And if I remember correctly, something similar happens at the end of side order too where Marina mentions an 88.8% chance of something. It's just a cool continuity thing from octo expansion, and they undeniably doubled down on the 8 theme in side order.

@DekuGamer9 ай бұрын
Honestly I get that feeling too. I play the game significantly less, but the graphic design was a reminder for me why I fell in love with the franchise in the first place. I'm so happy this video resonated with you and that you liked the graphic design stuff this poster had to offer.

As pointed out, the middle text says "Bankalive" (Bankara+Live) and not Tokyo Live The logo on the top right is one of Deep cut's many logos, resembling すりみ (surimi), in reference to their japanese name, Surimi-Rengo And the character in the middle is a splatoonified version of the character 轟 (gou), which is an onomatopoeia for the sound of an explosion or thunder. The full name of the event is Bankalive Gou.
@DekuGamer9 ай бұрын
Yes of course. Thank you for pointing all of this out! I really wish I had some way to verify this information with more people before publishing. I do my best to include accurate information but sometimes I overlook certain things. Anyway, I appreciate you breaking down the Japanese symbols and their translation. It's so interesting to see how much of the Japanese translation was kept in the designs in general.

A slight correction at 1:17 I said that the text translates to "Tokyo Live" but it actually translates to "Banka Live." I didn't think much of it as they both coincidentally have the same letter as the second and fifth character. Banka comes from the name Bankara which is the name of the Splatlands in Japanese. The characters on the poster closely reference the letters as "BANCA" too making that a more accurate translation. At least I got the "LIVE" part right lol

one thing that I noticed was that in the Japanese poster it included the character 轟 which would be a rumbling sound effect onomatopoeia in Chinese and probably also Japanese, but for the English poster it’s turned into a different symbol

actually the name of the event in the poster translates to “BANKALIVE” which comes from Bankara, the Splatland’s name in Japanese. Similarly past concerts have had the name HAIKALIVE, in reference to Haikara (Inkopolis)

I didn't know this! I swear I always get something wrong every video lol. It was an unfortunate coincidence that Banka and Tokyo both have the same letter as the second and fifth character. And I didn't think to question it because the event was called Tokyo Live. Thank you for letting me know!

@DekuGamer9 ай бұрын
Glad you found that interesting! That's kind of what inspired the video in the first place. It's always those tiny details that do so much for the design.
@MagicalGirlFia9 ай бұрын
0:42 It’s actually on the Front Roe album cover and funnily enough, we can glean the most info about it there. The text on the label is translatable- it’s very stylized inkling language *bubble script that says “SCALLOP” however the album cover has bonus text reading “SUPISDQDKO REKORDS” which seems to be a butchering of “Super(?) Squid Co Records” possibly making it a record company of some sort. *The same script Tokyo Live is written in btw! Edit: 1:44 The full text is actually a very stylized version of the word するみ (surumi) because Deep Cut’s Japanese name is “Surumi Union”. The み (mi) is what’s highlighted most and is their logo because it’s a (pretty archaic) way of saying “three” in Japanese! Anyways, it’s nice to see more videos- they’re really interesting and fun to me as a graphic designer hyperfixated on Splatoon who is both happy to realize some of these details and even learn new things
@DekuGamer9 ай бұрын
This is so interesting! I completely forgot about the Front Roe cover having it. It would make sense for it to be some sort of music company because it's used almost strictly in music things. I couldn't include it in the video but the logo is also seen as a sticker on Marina's guitar during splat fest! Ohhh that's such a cool detail too!! I'm so fascinated by how thoroughly that worked together. Thanks for sharing! I didn't know this stuff and it's always so cool to learn.

@DekuGamer9 ай бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. But I get that tbh. I was expecting one of the darkest stories in the franchise, though I do believe they kept a lot of those undertones in the final product. Splatoon just tends to be so subtle with what it conveys sometimes, and this one imo had too much of the darker themes in the exposition and not enough on the visual storytelling.

Well 8 is "oct" as a prefix so I think they used that to their advantage. Though I'm surprised it's similar in Chinese too.
