I think the reason why splatoon 3's hub is so genius is the use of verticality to create emphasis and contrast between sections. To get to the lobby, you have to go through a giant set of stairs, that almost make the lobby look like a palace. The center of splatland's society. And around the lobby you can find all of the other multiplayer gameplay related locations. Meanwhile, all of the shops and recon mode are located downtown. This is genius for a reason: contrast. We relate going up with getting ready to battle, meanwhile going down or going away from the lobby means relaxing and slowing down.
@DekuGamer2 жыл бұрын
Very nice analysis! You bring up a lot of great points that I didn't notice. The fact that the lobby and table turf are up the stairs kind of blows my mind. That's a clever detail. The one thing I've always loved about the shops across all the games is how consistent they are. They always keep similar color coding like a light blue or cyan for the shirt shop, orange for shoes, and a red-ish pink for the hats. Plus I love the consistency with the shopkeepers themselves. The shoe store owners are always some type of crustacean with that overall "fresh" nature about them, the hat store owners are some kind of laid-back creature with a tiny, energetic partner that references some kind of symbiotic relationship in real life, and the shirt store owners are always jellyfish with good fashion sense and get more sophisticated and older over the course of the games with Jelonzo speaking in strange mannerisms, Jelfonzo speaking in an almost Shakespearean way, and Jel la Fleur speaking in a similarly outdated way. I've never been the biggest fan of the hat shopkeepers that much but Gnarly Eddy has definitely changed that. I just love seeing all the new but slightly similar ways they can change these guys up and I love seeing their creativity shown through the characters.

I like that a lot of the stickers have seemingly incoherent names, but when you take a bit to look into them, they make complete sense. For example, the boxy maze on you talk about at 9:30 has the name TWSNTRN, which seems random, until you think about it. There are uneven shapes inside the lines, and it looks like a maze. What do those have in common? They both have twists and turns... Twists and Turns... TWSNTRN... It all makes sense. I've seen another in game that's something like FRGL, and it has broken glasses (the cups not the spectacles), FRGL, in this case, clearly meaning Fragile. 10:22 Funny you mention the SEGA Genesis, since that item in the game actually has the cover art for Squid Racer, a mini game from Splatoon 1. I didn't get a good look before because I forgot, but the sticker ANGSQ at 10:58 is most likely Angry Squid, as the sticker looks like a squid who happens to be angry. The SOZ-3 sticker at 10:57 has characters that look like those found on Japanese construction or road work signs. No idea what the SOZ on this one could mean though.

That would be an awesome idea to add! I like the idea of more pants customization. I think custom colors that don't change with ink colors would be great. And maybe for weapons we can add the Hotlantis stickers?
@normanred92122 жыл бұрын
The one big thing Splatoon 3 dropped the ball on was character creation and customization, we need to be able to change things like body type, eye ring design, head shape, have face paint/makeup, better distinction between girls and boys, actually have MORE hair choices rather than lazily unlocking all hair types(they only made 2 new hair styles for each i.e. 8 total), Octolings have colored fingers, earrings, and yes have more clothing choices for aesthetic reasons rather than gear. We just need more, think the level of customization from Saints Row 1&2
@Lillianz20122 жыл бұрын
We should have layered clothing but the first item you equip is the one that is applied to balance it

the face from octo expansion used on the blobmob emberz designs is in fact a blobfish meant to evoke a smiley face. you can see by looking closely that the "smile" is a floppy nose obscuring a frown

@@DekuGamer i also wanted to express: i do think gnarly eddy and nails have an interesting dynamic going on! while they keep up the trend of a laid-back shopkeeper with a small, energetic companion, not only is nails rather more friendly than his predecessors, he's actually canonically eddy's boss, reversing the established shopkeeper-assistant convention. i think that's fun!

The squid sticker with the X X eyes could be a reference to the vinyl figure artist KAWS.

I thought so too. I like all the referencing they've added in this game. And KAWS being a huge cultural figure, just makes perfect sense to be here.

The "tiny companion thing being done before" is actually not that the hat shopkeeper always has a small "companion", but that the two are always animals that have a symbiotic relationship in real life. In Splatoon 1 it's between Annie who's a sea anemone, and Moe who's a clownfish, and in Splatoon 2 it's between Flow who's a sea slug and Craymond who's an emperor shrimp. I'm honestly not sure what symbiotic relationship Gnarly Eddy and Nails are supposed to represent, we don't even know for sure what species Nails is yet, but they kept the patterns for the other 2 clothes stores (shoe shopkeeper is an animal with many legs and clothes shopkeeper is a jellyfish) so I doubt they'd break the tradition with just one of them :p

I like Sheldon's shop design. I like the cork board and peg look. It looks like a garage ngl and with the logo, idk it sorta fits with a wanna be tactahcool look. When it is clearly not something you like I like the details and stuff hanging near the roof. Granted art is highly subjective but saying "There's nothing here" Implies there is not much for anyone to like about the design. Also yes I do get it's mostly talking about refences to other things, but still.
@DekuGamer2 жыл бұрын
That's a fair point! Often times I get so fixated on the graphic design side of things, that I say things like, "there's not much else" because the other details outside of graphics design I tend to miss sometimes. That's why I like working with Jack because he spots so much that I would originally miss. I've learned so much from him and comments like yours. Thanks for the feedback, and thank you for understanding.

10:43 "Is that a squid with a leg?" That squid is one of the designs that the devs came up during the development of Splatoon 1. At a certain point they knew that because the game was about painting stuff, the character had to be a squid so they came up with it. You can see it more clearly on the Beta64 video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnuWpGCul6p4rck So yeah, it's a reference to the game development. They also snuck references to the tofu character too, if you know what to look for.
