Sadly Maddox's Cliff's of Dover was never given the support it needed to be the next 1946, Ubisoft forced it's premature release. I wish the community of 1946 would lend the current devs of Cliffs of Dover a big helping hand. It's a big engine upgrade over 1946, plane's are built like the real thing, frame, hoses, engine parts, everything, the damage modeling beats both DCS and the new IL-2 BoS. Though the collision model is still the same as 1946 but I bet that could be changed with the right people. But as it stand IL-2 1946 still and currently forever will be the only content rich sim that was done out of passion.

Cheers for promoting this old yet great game. But why do you compare it to dcs but not it's grandson - the modern IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad? It has better flight and damage models, although the scale is still not as massive as the original game was. Btw, it's pronounced [il], not [ail], as those are the first letters of the constructor/engineer who designed the plane, ILyushin.

Dear friends, we are seeing some light at the end of the flight sim tunnel. The re-emergence of other modern combat flight simulator competitors, with awesome, and probably finished, products such as IL-2 Korea (1CGS) & Viper 5.0/Strike Eagle 5.0 (Microprose/Razbam?), will make the current ED´s hegemonic trend change. If this publisher is wise enough they will not have another option but to metamorphisize. ED needs to get off their high horse, and begin developing finished modules at reasonable prices that help them establish a massive community of happy players that, in turn, will assure the relevancy of their company in the future. Some tips for ED, in case they want by once listen: • You can choose whether selling 100 modules to an elitist group of wealthy hobbyists who can afford your stratosferic module prices or, in contrast, sell 100,000 modules to a massive audience of regular gamers, who want to explore the flight sim world, at much much more sensible prices. • Observe the market. The development of much cheaper flight sim hardware by oriental companies, which will also humble their hardware competitors in the future, will bring many more common players to the genre. This masses will have to choose among the variety of combat flight sim titles available in the short-term future. • Make sure there is a dynamic campaign in place, fair balance between red, and blue modules, and that the suitable maps and eras match the jet/heli modules to increase customer satisfaction and retention. Remember they are very pissed, but they stay because there are not many other options (fortunately, in the short term;) • Leave the pride aside. Make sure your business counterparts, are satisfied with the contract conditions. Stop making a laughingstock of yourselves in front of your customers with childish fights and rants. • Making the right choices means that customers be satisfied, subcontracted developers are happy, and finally ES business remains viable in the future. • So boys at ED, gather together, involve all your second party developers, start with a brain storming session on how to proceed in the future to improve DCS. If you do not involve subcontractors, they might explore new titles and co-developers. Remember, leave the share-holders aside for a while. • Start reflecting, taking genuinely your customers suggestions into consideration. Adjust to customer´s demands, and start evolving from Vulture Statics toward Eagle Dynamics. • Good luck.

I can still vividly remember the first time I played Il-2, it was an absolute revelation compared to Combat Flight Simulator 2. Such a brilliant game, and the old forums were fun and had some memorable dramas - anyone remember the FW-190 cockpit view problem and US 50 .cal shot dispersion issues? Oh and the giant muzzle flashes? Great times 😊

IL-2 1946 is my absolute favorite singleplayer combat flight sim. Nothing really compares especially with Vorpx in VR

i played the 2001 version in 2004 and 1946 later with a cheap joystick had so much fun

you know you're a plane nerd when you hear the helldivers theme on an IL2 video and instantly know the SB2C is about to show up.

I never seemed to have any issues with replay, using the hotkeys to switch between aircraft and cameras, I thought it was quite good.

Wow that brings some memories. I remember picking Il-2 randomly on some pirate collection with a bunch of other (as usual, mostly non-working) games. I was like 9 years old and I was just doing autistic stuff, usually just pitting myself against AI in different planes, learning their specs and stats. I was amazed by how AI used different tactics against different types of planes. I remember fighting in a squad of prop fighters against one veteran AI Me-262. He just mopped the floor with me and my AI mates, methodically gaining speed and altitude between engagements, circling over us like a damn vulture before coming down and taking us out one by one. Legendary stuff.

There is a shit ton of content for this game and the other worthy flight sim just like this one is Janes Fighter anthology , becuz its still being modded to oblivion

SB2C Helldiver, a plane that will kill you if you do anything with the controls, or if the wind slightly pushes you.

It has enough detail to make it visually realistic, and the way things move seems to be correct. A modern PC can run almost any amount of AI planes and have realistic Airfields & targets with lots of objects and scenery. We need more Blues on the AleXserver.

Can someone help me with my issue? I'm playing on a Windows 11 laptop and managed to fix the infamous issue of the game not starting up or working on such systems but now when I enter a scenario escape button does nothing and I don't hear any sounds (I checked the settings, the sound output and whatnot and didn't find a fix on the internet even).

I have been playing 1946 since I was in third grade. It has been insane watching how it evolved over the years with mods like CUP and BAT. It saddens me to think that there will never be another sim like this.

I love IL-2 1946. It’s the game that really got me into planes.

I played this game almost my whole youth with my father, we never get to owning a joystick and I still remember that this game was really not so bad to handle only with keyboard. They put so much effort in this game to really be there for everybody. The settings from arcade all the way to sim is fantastic.

Yeah the sense of being in a big war that this seems to give more(haven’t flown it yet but am thinking about getting it) is something dcs and sometimes il2 GB lacks. Yes it can be fun to learn to land an f 14 on a carrier but when you want to move on and use it for its intended purpose you either have to build all the scenarios yourself or you play multiplayer where people mostly fly around at random to find enemies to kill
