i love this so much. Would this process work for something concave and thin ( 1/4 inch) like a helmet visor? I want to resin cast a sci-fi style visor from a 3d print.

How did you not get any bubbles in the casting? Did you skip the step where you removed them with heat before pouring?

Thank you for the tutorial! Will the silicone withstand very hot temperatures like melted glass or melted sugar?
@victoriapitt2305
@victoriapitt2305 3 күн бұрын
This silicone can withstand temps up for 450 degrees F. So not melted glass but probably yes on melted sugar.

I genuinely hate it when i try to find information about some specific crafting technics like what foam do they use for props molding, what mix do they use for electroplating, what resin is being used for this or that and you always find youtube video of american companies (which of course only sell in the US) maskerading ads as tutorials on how to use that specific stupid tradmarked name product that at the end of the day you still don't what kind of generic alternative you should look for if you don't live in the US and/or don't want to spend 50$ in shiping to get it imported. "Oh you want to smooth those printing lines on your 3d print? Just use turbosmoothmaxiflex3000™ for only 50$ 1oz + shiping! That or just get a 200ml pot of epoxy for 10€ at your local hardware store...."

Victoria, I need to make one small part, not much more than about an inch long, to replace a missing part in a plastic model kit. Seems like it would be awfully expensive for such a small part to purchase all those materials. Would there be any better way to do it?

I LOVE this technique you used to make a cold casting. I've never seen it done like this before and the finished head looks really great. I have a question to ask. What do you mean by "registration" in relation to molding? I did hear another person use the same word about lining up 2 halves of a silicone mold, is that what it refers to? Thank you very much for this great video tutorial. Cheers from Amanda in Melbourne, Australia

You are correct. Registration refers to the 2 halves of the mold lining up correctly.

@victoriapitt2305

When pouring the silicone the mold release must be for use with silicone, and when casting the part it must be for for urethane. Ease Release 200 works for both!

A silicone two part mold like this is great for casting foam squishies as well! I like to use FlexFoam iT! III and 6 by Smooth-On. Casting foam can be a little tricky though so I recommend watching a few foam casting videos for tips and tricks.

You Forgot the MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL OF IT ALL!!! You didn’t show us or tell us that you Must have an opening somewhere in order to pour the resin in.

In this scenario, the object has a flat bottom so you can pour into that. But yes you are correct, if you're model does not have a flat bottom, you must construct a pour spout into the mold.

Can you use vasoline as a release agent to release both halves?

Hello! I've been crafting silicone molds for my customers and noticed varying behaviors in the same brand of siliconeI use platinum based silicon. While previous curing times difered-ranging from 24 hours to as little as 3 hours-they never affected the resin outcome until now. Recently, when the silicone cured within 3 hours and I poured resin into it, the silicon lost its shine upon removal of resin from the mold. This unexpected issue has me deeply concerned. Any guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

There are a few things that could be going on there. I recommend calling the manufacturer of your materials. If it's Smooth-On, they have amazing technical support.

Is there a way to do this with a silicone interior to make prop gummie bears?
@victoriapitt2305
@victoriapitt2305 6 ай бұрын
Yes! You can cast silicone, you just need to use a release agent like Ease Release 200. OR, you can use Smooth-On's Compat 45, a urethane rubber, to make your mold. Usually you can not cast silicone into a urethane rubber but Compat 45 is formulated to work with most silicones. Then you can bypass using the release agent.

Thanks for the video, found it really helpful! Have you ever tried a mechanical way to mix the putty? I'd like to use this for a large project but the hand mixing is making it unworkable I think. I'm thinking maybe an old standing baking mixer with a dough paddle? would love any ideas you have!
