Hi there! I really want your advice! My parents don't know much about the biotechnology field. I recently graduated from high school, and I'm considering studying biotechnology or pharmacy. I'm a little unsure about my decision and whether I should pursue pharmacy or biotechnology. Since you're a biotechnologist, I was hoping you could give me some advice on whether pursuing this field would be a good choice for me. i sent you the message in insta too!

Hi I pursued a bachelor of science in a medical laboratory technician(Bs.c MLT) in India. Now I want to pursue Ms.by research in biomedical science in the USA or Canada. Is this a good option which I choose. Suggest me if I'm wrong?

I also wanna ask the same question. I hope, soon she will notice your comment. Im also a student of bs hons pathology and laboratory medicine. But im thinking to pursue masters in biomedical science, coz im more interested in research.

I wonder if you could make a video about how you stay up-to-date with your field now that you're working; if you suscribe to any journals to keep up with papers, and generally how you find interesting research in your field :)

What does success mean to you? If you’re working in research, it’s inevitable that a lot of us tie our successes to positive data and results. Undoubtedly, the more experiments you do, the more data you generate. In that sense, yes, working longer hours in the lab gets you a step closer to that published paper, which hooray 🙌 is academic success!! However, having worked in academia and industry for a few years now, I’ve noticed that a lot of hard work often goes unnoticed. I’ve interacted with a range of colleagues, all very skilled at what they do, but the difference between someone getting a promotion or landing certain opportunities is often, unfortunately, based on how well they can talk about the work they’ve accomplished. Caveat: other factors include luck and timing, your network, whether your supervisor is perceptive to quiet contributions etc. etc. So, why is it that the guy who is literally in the coffee room half the time getting invited to board meetings while the highly skilled animal technician who works insane hours doesn’t? On top of gender inequality (which is another discussion of it’s own), the other reason is because one person is able to make their contributions known, and more importantly, to make it known to the right person - big boss (i.e., CEO or PI). It’s an especially unfair game for introverts. After all, the world was designed by extroverts for extroverts. Additionally, being brought up in an Asian household means that one’s core value is to be humble and work hard. And one’s nature and values can’t simply change overnight. When I left my job, the CEO of my company wrote in my farewell card “thank you for your quiet contributions.”and until this day, I’m not too sure how I feel about that remark. That statement stuck with me because, at my core, I still believe that actions speak louder than words. However, as someone who is generally quiet by nature and finds it more comfortable to speak within a smaller circle of people, I didn’t know if this trait of mine would hinder me from achieving great career success down the line. I’d love to hear your thoughts! #researchlife #introvertstruggles #careergrowthtips
@irenesebastian423Ай бұрын
I'd like to believe that your CEO meant that as a positive remark. As you had mentioned at the start, they probably were perceptive about the "quiet contributions"
@irenesebastian423Ай бұрын
But yea, I feel you. I'm a very quiet person and I too prefer to speak within a small circle of people. So I feel your pain..

If you’re looking to progress in your research career, you’ll need to be able to do more than just executing lab techniques. Although developing a broad range of wet lab skills is highly valuable in the early stages of your career, you will soon realise that ultimately, most experiments boil down to: 1) understanding the purpose of the experiment, 2) the science behind it, and 3) how to execute it. It is without a doubt that becoming competent in the lab requires a lot of practice, attention to detail and occasionally green fingers. Getting really good at a specific set of lab techniques makes you an invaluable member to the team and will even be beneficial for future job applications where said company is looking for a candidate who already has the desired skill set (and will therefore require minimal training). If you intend to move up the career ladder and achieve a scientist, principal staff scientist or even professor level position, there are more important qualities to nurture in the long-run. In my opinion, the difference between an entry level research assistant position and a more senior scientist role is one’s ability to design experiments and troubleshoot quickly (ofc this comes with experience). If we’re talking higher managerial roles, having good EQ which allows you to identify your team’s strengths, nurture it and recruit new members to fit your team’s culture, is an important quality of a leader. Adding on to that, labs need funding to support ongoing experiments and to pay salaries, therefore being a good writer (to apply for grants) and communicator (to pitch your ideas and communicate the importance and relevance of your work) are vital skills to have. Therefore, yes, having experience in the lab is necessary and allows for you to empathise and understand what your team is actually working on and the feasibility of set timelines. But, to propel you further along your research career, do note that it’s often not so much about the practical skills, but rather the transferable ones. #researchlife #researchcareer #careerinscience #careerdevelopment #careergrowthtips #lablife #researchers #experimentaldesign #womeninscience
