I dont understand there is not yet a full recording of a scenic Junge Lord. Much better that many contemporary compositions.

Max Brod's translation was deliberately dismissed for this production, because of its pursuit of modernity, in which some meaning and simplicity was lost. Walter Felsenstein staged the adventures of the vixen Bystrousky after having let a native speaker made a rough translation and with this making his own version of the libretto.

This opera was the catalyst for my practical obsession with sacred melodramas. Granted, I dislike(d) Ensemble Les Arts Florissants's fluctuating key, plain set, and historically inaccurate costumes. But still, I personally found/find Max Cencic quite suited to the role created for the mezzo-soprano castrato Marco Pasqualini. Philippe Jaroussky, were he a higher mezzo-sopranist or eve sopranist, might have made the soprano castrato Angelo Ferrotti proud. I actually suggested "Il Sant'Alessio" to an Argentinean male soprano Leonidas Miklos that I accidentally stumbled upon. His dramatic voice would be perfect for the personage of Saint Alexius's mother, Aglaesia. I hope certain Italian archives will cease being stingy, allotting us access to further 'melodrammi sacri.' Virgilio Mazzocchi's three, as well as Mario Savioni's "La Santa Agnese" ("Saint Agnes") (1651, Rome) would be marvelous starters.

Alois Muehlbacher's voice would have "broken" by now. He was still a boy soprano at around sixteen or 17 years of age; someone like him granted audiences an example of the lads Johann Sebastian Bach got to compose for. I think Muehlbacher decided to train as either a mezzo-sopranist or a sopranist like mezzo-sopranist Max Cencic once did, though I may be wrong. Nevertheless, while I'm not a fan of this young man at times, he sang wonderfully here. William Savage was a boy mezzo-soprano to clarify, at least by Geoerg Haendel's take; Oberto's lines extend only to A5 (a'').

Alois is a countertenor now; I have just found a recent YT video of him that features him singing in falsetto and speaking in a changed voice. His voice did break very late, though; you may have seen the video of him from 2-3 years ago singing some Brahms in a still unchanged voice, when he would have been 19 or 20. If pushed, I would say my all-time favourite treble is Clint van der Linde, and Alois would be joint second with Aksel Rykkvin. I prefer this rendition of 'Barbara' to the one on Aksel's album, but I realise that Alois was 15 here whereas Aksel was only 12 years and 9 months when he recorded it, plus Alois had the stimulus of a live performance. I would love to hear the now 14-and-a-half year old Aksel sing the aria in a live setting.

Yes...it is the great Julius Patzak. He's most well known from his performance of the tenor part on the Das Lied von der Erde with Bruno Walter and Kathleen Ferrier. He's also the Loge on the Furtwangler RAI Ring Cycle. He was noted with an effortlessly produced, bright, clear voice with scrupulous attention to pitch and other musical details. Clearly one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century!!
