Amazing to see something I produced and directed so long ago on KZbin. It was such a great experience filming this version of Curlew River during the Britten Festival at Georgetown. The stage producer/director was Joseph McClean. Michael Sells sang the role of the Madwoman, Tom Heygood was the Ferryman, Charles Hammett as the Traveler, Matthew Dupuy as the Spirit of the boy and David McShane as the Abbott.

This was really very effective. It seems very similar to what I have read about the original production, but I didn't imagine it working this well.

Britten had just returned from Japan and was inspired by the Noh theatre he saw and thus decided to employ the mask in Curlew river which, incidently I think was based on a japanese play or legend(?)

"...I think was based on a japanese play or legend(?)" It was, Nick - Britten was inspired by a medieval Noh-play called "Sumidagawa", which the composer saw in Japan in the 1950s.

Awesome job directing it. Was their applause after the performance, and did you use the traditional bringing down of the lights and keeping them off for a period?
