Always wondered why there are footprints but you never hear about dinosaur bones being found on the Yorkshire coast, only marine reptile. Were the conditions not conducive for fossilisation of remains making it very very rare/impossible?
@TheYorkshireFossilHunter

Yah I think so Paul, it’s not through the lack of trying believe me ha ha. My friend has found a few small dino bones but they are super rare.

I thought there were laws about collecting fossils! If you can see them on the beach already exposed to the naked eye, you're able to take them. If you are using hammer and chisel etc. you are breaking the law and could face fines. Two French lads got caught along the jurassic coast doing what you're doing and got fined! Not good for british archeology etc!

Hi Natalie, everything I collect is exsitu and perfectly legal to take. I am a very responsible collector and have been collecting fossils for many years now. It’s also palaeontology, not archaeology. If you think the fossils in the museums and collections are found like the way you see them on display they you are sadly mistaken. The finding of the fossil is the first part. We then have to clean them which takes many many hours in some case then they can be studied if scientifically important then finally out on display. Many thanks Mark

Also worth noting the French people were suing power tools and cutting fossils out of the bed rock to take back to France. Totally not acceptable and absolutely not in lines with the fossil hunting code of conduct here in the uk.

It looks beautiful! Thinking about ordering some ammonite nodules to prepare myself. Never done it, but looks like fun!. (Here in the Netherlands no ammonites or nautilus fossils anywhere) Because of the latter, planning to do a trip to Yorkshire and have a one to one amonitehunt with you!

I have so many awesome mortality plates and specimens that I can tell what is even underneath some of the rock from studying anatomy so much but I have no experience in prep. Maybe one day I will get money for a pen and just learn. Where I'm from in the states has an over abundance of silurian fossils so I would have plenty to practice on.

Nice piece of work enjoyed it. had many happy days on the Yorkshire coast fossil collecting. You have many miles of coastline with constantly eroding cliffs. I live near the Dorset coast and mostly collect there. It's not so extensive a lot less to search, some stunningly beautiful fossils can be found but you have to work very hard most of the time to get a result. Much more competition in a compact search area, unlike Yorkshire with miles of reefs and under cliff sections.

Huge cliff slide here, August 2023. A section of cliff from the very top including the soils and sandstone layers has come down onto these very rocks. The remaining sandstone beds near the top of the cliff, either side of the slide are looking precarious.
