I have better luck with Amaco glazes when I dab it on rather than brush it on. This is true from 04 to 6 for me.

I actually dab with a loaded brush and it seems to work better.

It's more of a clay mixer than a pug mill. A pug mill removes all the air using the same concept. The auger inside the food grinder is what compresses the air out as it forces it through the holes. The individual noodles won't have air in them. For this to really work better, the clay has to be forced through an opening smaller than itself. This could work if you could find a heavy iron plate that has one hole in it or a nozzle would work, like a funnel. It also would need to be smaller. Maybe a cast pipe flange would work or start with a large threaded piece of pipe that screws onto the grinder part and reduce it down. Can't be PVC, the pressure would crack it I think. These grinders come up at auctions all the time, they go cheap too. Most are rusted and can't be used for food anymore, but a bit of "iron" in the clay will just make red flecks in it when it fires in the kiln. You can purchse them new, but they are not nearly as well made as the old ones.
@CaptMike20 күн бұрын
Thanks for the info and you are right. It mostly makes the clay the same consistency. For the small batches I use the grinder on I count on wedging to remove any air.

All clay will bisque at around cone 4.Just let the piece turn red hot and it should work.

I’m pretty new to this so I was wondering if there was a sequence? I keep seeing ppl talking about holding times and cool down and things like that. How long you want it to take to get to that temp. I have a orton auto fire that goes up to 1700
@CaptMikeАй бұрын
Average bisque temps are around 1650-1940°F (900-1060°C), Rapid cooling of bisque is normally not an issue.

Capt. Mike - I appreciate your videos, thanks! Quick question - did you rotate the kiln during the test? Some people do, some don't. And if it's not rotating, the differences might be due to gaps as the MW radiation bounces around? Your thoughts?

The microwave I use has a turntable so it rotates automatically.

Hello Capt Mike, for fusing, do you leave the microwave tray rotating or not? I read that it should be stopped from spinning. My fiberglass paper turns brown (almost burnt) while the glass does not melt (after 4x2' in a row). Do you know where this could come from? Thank you very much for the informations. Have a good day
@CaptMikeАй бұрын
If your microwave is working properly the shelf paper should burn and turn completely white. I let my turntable turn as designed.

I’m just finding out about being able to use a microwave to melt stuff. Is it okay to use my microwave in my kitchen? Or does this ruin a microwave and make it unsafe for preparing food? Do I need to do it in a well ventilated space or is it safe to do inside a room in my house? I’m just wondering if there are any gases or anything to be concerned about. Sorry if you covered that in the video and I missed it.

I haven't heard of using a designated microwave for this like I've heard of blenders wi rh papermakijg.

@@Gilded_Cage_Princess thanks. I’m thinking I can probably just snag a cheapo second hand one off Facebook marketplace. But my kiln just arrived and I’m too eager to try it to wait. Hopefully it’s safe in terms of any gases it might emit.

Capt Mike, I am a little confused. I am a stained glass mosaic artist and I want to explore this method. All I have is standard stained glass. However, I watched several videos of a lady that uses broken wine bottles to do this same thing. I am wondering if you are saying we need to use fuseable glass? And are you saying one cannot mix the type of glass?
