Looks like your kid has grown up : ) congrats on your project. I just purchased a BD-4B set of plans. Also purchased the Verner 9S Scarlett. My plan is to build similar structure to the BD-4 for that engine : )

Sorry for the delay that's awesome and would be the coolest set-up. Bd-4 is a tank of an airframe likely to have no issues holding onto a 251lb motor. That's so cool. Let me know when you get that mounted.

so, I want to build one. what is your opinion?
@B-RadThePILOT Жыл бұрын
Do it. Zero regrets. It's such a well built airframe. It's easy for new builders and the best airspeed for your buck on the market. I will build another in the future from scratch. Growing up I remember looking through aircraft spruce catalog seeing the BD-4 and said ewwwww gross I'd never. Here I am 15 years later with an amazing aircraft.

How has this project been progressing? Looks like a lot had been completed when you bought it, but still plenty to do to finish it. There isn't much BeDe 4C info online. It would be great to see yours make it into the air.

My day job picked up and less time for the project. I'm down to a few hours a week. I see a window coming up for me so I anticipate some strong progress here shortly. I'm slow with edits I have a few episodes that are in the works just waiting to be finished editing.

High wing is nice for getting in out, usually 2 doors, good for my wife with back issues.

Excellent point and the Bd-4 doors are massive.

I appreciate your series and look forward to more posts. I never even heard of the BEDE. Thank you for giving me something to research a bit more. I am not an engineer but I don't see how it can be so good on fuel with the nose it has on it. Go figure. I watched the engine teaser video. Maybe I did not watch close enough. But what engine are you putting in yours? I am guessing with how often you mention smiles per mile you are going with 4 cylinder.
@B-RadThePILOT Жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you, I grew up knowing the name mostly negative but I later realized that was specifically the bd-5 micro jet not the bd-4. I definitely agree I'll tell my fuel burn with zero sugar coating. I say smiles per mile in relation to getting your plane done sooner than later. As for the engine I did let the cat out of the bag a little with my latest in the shop short. It shows 4 cylinders on just on side of the block. But since you asked I will tell you. It's an LS3.
@jberg411 Жыл бұрын
@@B-RadThePILOT This build just became so much more exciting. With the LS3 it is astounding how much lower the rebuild cost can be.
@B-RadThePILOT Жыл бұрын
@@jberg411 absolutely, saftey, availability and cost were contributions factors to my decision. With the money saved I could buy another engine leave it on the stand ready to swap at any moment. Mind you I have meticulously went thru recommend engine maintenance from the manufacture and converted the milage to an hourly checklist of items. In an effort to treat it with a safety factor that aligns with aviation standards and above all service the engine as you would for an aircraft engine.

@B-Rad The PILOT In doing your research what video or website was the Tipping Point when you mentally made the decision the Bede4 is my next plane?
@B-RadThePILOT Жыл бұрын
@@jberg411 The major tipping point was the NTSB records and a close second was the active builders forum on bd-4.org. 3rd was performance numbers from members and not the manufacturer website. Sadly no video influenced by decision but I do enjoy watching @skyfun videos.

I own and fly a BD-4B. I did not build it. It was completed in 2015 and I bought it from the builder last year. It has a 180 hp Lycoming O-360 with an Ellison throttle body and a Hartzell constant speed prop. It is a 150kt airplane without the wheel pants, which the builder says give another 7-8 kts. There's nothing wrong with 150kts. Burns about 9.5 gph so about 4 hours with reserves. Your wife will need to pee then anyway. Sea level climb with two up and full fuel is 1400-1500 fpm. Before you think about a bigger (heavier) engine sit down with your CG limit diagram and wonder how you're going to fly from the back seat. The plane is very stable when trimmed out, surprisingly so since it has no dihedral. I have no autopilot but I can take my hand off the stick while I attend to navigation or whatever without any concern that it will suddenly do something stupid. The rudder is large and very sensitive. Keep your feet off the pedals unless you mean it. A gentle tap when turning is all that is needed, It will stay co-ordinated without my clumsy feet. The pitch trim is very very sensitive.
@B-RadThePILOT Жыл бұрын
For sure and thank you for the wealth of information I've heard great things. Sounds like your getting some pretty good performance with that Lycoming. I am watching the cg like a hawk and I'm prepared for the hurdles it brings. Good to know on that trim I'll probably do as some of the others on the forum and adjust the trim wheel while it's out.

I am surprised the BD does not have more of a following? It definitely seems like the best bang for the buck!
@B-RadThePILOT2 жыл бұрын
I agree it really is. I remember hearing everyone loathed the Bede-5 and it was dubbed the pilot killer and Jim Bede a lier and thief etc. Which in return I think gave a bad taste in everyone's mouth about anything Bede related. Probably doesn't help it has a box appearance. I think the tide is changing for the aircraft. Especially if you want a new certified high wing aircraft that isn't 500k++

Looking forward to more videos. I am in the process of building a 4C, and even though yours is a B, it is nice to see some of the connection points I am working on today. As you mentioned about the fuel lines, curious to know why they did not run in the tubes in the channels?
@B-RadThePILOT2 жыл бұрын
Hey Matthew, the B and C models are so close I have read it's only size that's different. Also, I have TVAP wings as you noticed those are very different than a C/B model. Let me know if you want to see anything specifically I will happily upload a video clip of an area I know how helpful just seeing it together / behind the joints really is. I will probably build another BD-4 a C model the next time. For real regarding the fuel lines. I recently found it was due to the pitot and angle of attack air lines... Although there is a 3rd air line.. Static?? I haven't chased that down.
