One subtle thing that took me a few watches to notice is that after Sam and Steve introduce themselves to each other - and we all fall in love with Sam, and Anthony Mackie's portrayal, immediately - Sam tries to show empathy by bringing up how disorientating the world must feel for Steve. Although his intentions are good, Steve shuts down, like he probably does everytime someone reminds him of how misplaced he is in the current world. But then, Sam mentions the bed thing, which tells Steve that he is a veteran and that he feels out of place too. He gives Steve something to relate to: we're not so different, you and I. Different times and different wars, but the feeling's the same. He immediately becomes someone Steve can identify with and choose to trust. God I love this movie.

It surprises me that nobody ever mentions the dialogue between Vincent and Max, just before Max is forced to meet the gangster. Max: how long you been doing this", Vincent: Private sector, five years. This subtly changes the moral compass of Vincent's remorseless life. The implication, he's been killing in the public sector previously, armed forces, special forces, government agency? This implies, that's ok though, nobody minds about that. It's a well worn trope, soldier trained to kill, what did you expect, but here it's just a subtle aside, a shiver from some distant battlefield.

Suspense happens when the characters are in a dangerous situation where they must proceed carefully to get out of danger. the danger is created by establishing it first and foremost to the audience. Then, you can write the story around that danger, where it is subject to random or plotted out appearances. take the barrels floating on yhe surface of the ocean in JAWS. The appearance of the barrels suggest the presence of the shark without actually showing the shark. sometimes, the power of suggestion is enough to create suspense. an old hitchcock trick, is to depict the hero characters as being unaware of the danger's presence. Like the bomb under the table theory. Being careful about the right amount of information you give them, is key.

Thus the lesson from Michael Mann's Collateral what Max learns from Vincent in the movie: "If you wanna be successful in this world, you gotta be prepared to get dirty coz this world is often dirty to begin with." Vincent's and Max's characters are well written. Very reminiscent of Heat (again made by Michael Mann).

Kubrick did use Speilberg style oners at times. Look at the opening scene of eyes wide shut. No technique is off limits for him as there are no rules to good art only what best fits scene and desired feelings.

7:15 this is a really interesting point, the more 'insane' the character becomes the more 'aware' they become of the viewer. I always felt like his films placed the audience on the outside looking in, then the characters are on the inside looking out. When the character looks into the lens, the 4th wall isn't necessarily broken, instead a sort of bond is created where both myself and the character have become detached from our worlds and we are meeting in the middle.

If only Vincent would have followed his own advice and "improvise, adapt and overcome" in the end scene where he faces Max in the train, Vincent went with what he knows and went to the "Mozambique drill" 2 in the chest, one in the head even when there was a steel barrier directly in his way, and Max firing blindly ends up killing Vincent.

I actually wanted to watch Collateral not because of the action, story, or even the actors. It was because of one particular character: Vincent. After watching Collateral, I think Vincent is the most mysterious character ever put on film, even more than Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men and the Joker from the Dark Knight.

Could you elaborate? Why do you think that?
@starwarsfan967
@starwarsfan967 3 жыл бұрын
@@deanyunghans1358 On the outside, Vincent is a hitman, a hunter. On the inside, we really don't know anything about him. No information on his backstory. While the same can be said for Anton, there is one scene in Collateral that sets Vincent apart. When he tells Max to meet with Felix and get the list, he says "I don't meet people. Walk in there, say you're me." That tells me that Vincent could also be a codename and that he has to keep his identity a secret. If that's true, then we don't know his real name. While we don't know the Joker's real name either, I don't think he's as self-aware as Vincent. Plus the Joker gives 2 different stories on how he got his scars and we don't know which is true, if any of them are. Honestly, I don't think he really cares, because all he wants is chaos. Vincent remains a mystery because he always adapts to the environment and the situation without lingering on the past, or at least on a way that affects him personally.

Yes you are right but both the actors we're given backstory for they're characters and Vincent mom died at childbirth and his father was a alcoholic and used to beat him everyday then Vincent moved from many foster homes and spent his childhood in indiana Vincent was a very disturbed and traumatised guy from a very young age.
