"Collateral" is a movie which you may bump into in a Blu Ray bin at an electronics store. The film has become somewhat of a forgotten early 2000s action thriller. But digging deeper, there is brilliant character work on display through the film's magnificent screenplay. Here is my analysis review on the character development from Michael Mann's "Collateral".
All footage used to make this video is intended for the purpose of entertainment and film criticism. I in no way claim ownership of any footage used in this video.

I love how Vincent tells a story about a dead man riding the MTA in the opening and that’s what happens to him in the end

I was going to make a thank you video for all of my new subscribers. But I felt it was better to make something which you guys hopefully enjoy and thank you here. Before I published my "One Marvelous Scene" video my channel had thirty two subscribers. That number is now more than three time that much. I want to first of all thank Nando V Movies for giving small time content creators a great opportunity by leaving the playlist open. If you hadn't started your series, I never would have made my video. For everyone who watched my video thank you very much for all of your positive comments. That video wasn't a one time thing. I have been making video essays for a few months now and I really enjoy the process. I am still trying to improve my content so please let me know what I can do to make my videos better. I am open to requests for videos if you would like to see me analyze a particular film or filmmaking method. Note that for this month I have final exams for college. Come summer I'll have far more time to work on video essays. But for now this is probably the only video I'll make for this month. One last thank you to everyone who has watched my videos or subscribed to my channel. I hope you guys enjoy the video.

Great piece on a fantastic & underrated movie. Tom Cruise totally nails the villain role with a textured & layered powerhouse performance.

It surprises me that nobody ever mentions the dialogue between Vincent and Max, just before Max is forced to meet the gangster. Max: how long you been doing this", Vincent: Private sector, five years. This subtly changes the moral compass of Vincent's remorseless life. The implication, he's been killing in the public sector previously, armed forces, special forces, government agency? This implies, that's ok though, nobody minds about that. It's a well worn trope, soldier trained to kill, what did you expect, but here it's just a subtle aside, a shiver from some distant battlefield.

I actually wanted to watch Collateral not because of the action, story, or even the actors. It was because of one particular character: Vincent. After watching Collateral, I think Vincent is the most mysterious character ever put on film, even more than Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men and the Joker from the Dark Knight.

Could you elaborate? Why do you think that?

@@deanyunghans1358 On the outside, Vincent is a hitman, a hunter. On the inside, we really don't know anything about him. No information on his backstory. While the same can be said for Anton, there is one scene in Collateral that sets Vincent apart. When he tells Max to meet with Felix and get the list, he says "I don't meet people. Walk in there, say you're me." That tells me that Vincent could also be a codename and that he has to keep his identity a secret. If that's true, then we don't know his real name. While we don't know the Joker's real name either, I don't think he's as self-aware as Vincent. Plus the Joker gives 2 different stories on how he got his scars and we don't know which is true, if any of them are. Honestly, I don't think he really cares, because all he wants is chaos. Vincent remains a mystery because he always adapts to the environment and the situation without lingering on the past, or at least on a way that affects him personally.

Yes you are right but both the actors we're given backstory for they're characters and Vincent mom died at childbirth and his father was a alcoholic and used to beat him everyday then Vincent moved from many foster homes and spent his childhood in indiana Vincent was a very disturbed and traumatised guy from a very young age.

If only Vincent would have followed his own advice and "improvise, adapt and overcome" in the end scene where he faces Max in the train, Vincent went with what he knows and went to the "Mozambique drill" 2 in the chest, one in the head even when there was a steel barrier directly in his way, and Max firing blindly ends up killing Vincent.

Thus the lesson from Michael Mann's Collateral what Max learns from Vincent in the movie: "If you wanna be successful in this world, you gotta be prepared to get dirty coz this world is often dirty to begin with." Vincent's and Max's characters are well written. Very reminiscent of Heat (again made by Michael Mann).
