I enjoyed the Hallicrafters SX-28 repair series. I just acquired one. It appears to have been recapped a while back with General Instrument Pyramid capacitors. Nor sure when they were popular. You? The alignment is way off, except on the AM Broadcast band. I plan to tackle that in the near future. 73 Paul AA1SU

Sorry pink wire, not paint wire

Hi, Great video! Purchased one of the tach and have it all installed in the case. The instruction sheet says to hook the S wire to the signal cable of the car. I have a 66 mustang so I’m sure it’s like your wiring set up on your car, so where does the S wire connect to the coil or to the paint wire under the dash? Thanks for the reply.

I just picked one up for free at a ham swap. The case was grimy, but the inside looked great. The copper plating surprised and pleased me. I turned it on when I got home, bringing up the AC slowly, but got hum just as you did. Thanks for the reminder about the AC/DC floating circuitry. I suspect I would have done just as you did. I'll also check for silver migration in the IF cans. I think you have covered most of the likely problems that I might have missed, so thank you. I plan on fixing it up and giving it to a kid to listen to, just as my neighbor, a TV repairman gave me a Hallicrafters SX-25 back in 1964 when I was a curious kid. It's only an All-American 5 style receiver, unlike the SX-25, but in a rural area with a good antenna it will do OK.

I miss the days of old junk shops when you could find those for a couple of bucks. I bought a lot of radios from the profits from my paper route. My first was a deco Radiola 33 and then a couple of Radiola 18s followed in quick succession. Back then (in the late 60s - early 70s) you plugged them in and they worked.

Check with Scott at "Cold War Motors" a fellow u tuber with lots of old mopars😊 for the door handle.

I used white out for the lethers., then scrape off with razor or a strait screw driver. Work for me.

You can get that tape. It is called friction tape.

I have a 1955 New Yorker that's mostly all original. I love these cars. There's really nothing else like them. Every cruise in and car show I go to mine draws a lot of lookers. Everyone says the same thing. "I've never seen one." Good luck with restoring yours!

Have u plugged it in? the part w 1 tube is power supply. yup pin connections for the speaker. if plates of tube glow red unplug quickly or u will burn out power supply B+ for the plates of tubes. I had a radiola 16 or 17 back in the 70's batteries such as for B+ were very hard to get

I always have a chuckle when these electronic purest have a problem with restoring the outside surfaces but have no problem updating and restoring the internals. It's like if someone was restoring a 67 Ford mustang but putting a Honda motor instead of restoring original motor.

Great insight into your conversion-I am getting ready to do the same on my 65-Did you align or check for bell housing run out with a dial meter to insure transmission was properly indexed? Tremec transmission have tapered bearings on the input shaft and do not tolerate misalignment more than 0.005 in as per Tremec.

Great Job it should last another 30 years till the new capacitors you installed dry out like the ones you replaced.

so you removed the 8 pin from the back and put in the 11 male? i have the 8 male out the back what do i do with the other 3? thanks

She's a beauty. I had a 66 with a 4-speed that I sold after I got married, had a baby and then bought a house. No more time or money for the Mustang. Glad you can keep it in the family.

I ran across one when I was a teenager. Needless to say it never got fixed. I give it to my aunt and uncle and he saved it for years. They both passed and lord only knows what happened to it. Thank you for the interesting video. God bless you and yours.

Greetings 2: If you can match a nut or top of the coil that provided the adjustment capability then you are set (You may decide that you do not need the slug grooves at all.)

Greetings: I realize that the ferrite cores may vary by their amount of iron. I have an idea. I would think that the core of a cast-off ferrite loopstick antenna could be ground up with a morrtar and pestal, then add some thin adhesive to the mix. I saw you make the mold, so we need to make the slug. How cleanly the mold will part from the casting to keep the "grooviness" of the slug. The inductance of the existing wire coil, it is used to resonate with a capacitor already wired to it. I hope the resonance frequencies for all of the involved circuits are known or calculated. Then an rf generator source could be used across the tank to watch for the induced signal peak as the new slug is adjusted. Maybe a new capacitor value may be needed so that the coil/slug combo resonates as needed. A scope probe attached across the "tank" should allow the slug to be adjusted as the signal amplitude peaks on the scope display. Reducing the separation between the slug and coil will raise the inductance. Yes, the probe capacitance could be an issue, but I hope the signal peak stays tunable. I suspect you might have envisioned a simpler fix, but once you started with a mold I figured you'd be open to mixing up your own "brew". You could always add it on filings to the mix to raise the inductance or use more adhesive in the mix to lower the inductance. I assume the tanks are used for band oscillators or band antenna tuners, so working with the known band ranges and the air-cap range, the needed upper & lower band limits can be calculated. All of this relies on the exiting coils to be functional such that peak resonance can be met.

I started viewing your videos and subscribed because I have a 1956 Chrysler New Yorker St. Regis, bone stock, 100% complete survivor. It has some rust, but not near as much as yours and I picked up a few tips seeing how you did your repairs. I suffered through your painful learning curve with the attempt to rechrome pot metal, really hoping it would work, because my car has the same problem. Did you investigate chrome powder coat? Eastwood has a nice looking bright chrome and a metal filler paste that can handle the 400 degree curing heat of the powder coat process. They advise a clear coat powder over the chrome for best results. I guess the big caveat would be if the curing heat causes any problems with the adhesion of the powder. As I find time I am going to search for info on this. Are you going to continue posting the body and mechanical restoration work?

i have a question about the wax capacitors in the radio portion are those all 0.47 or are some of them different?

Absolutely my type of radio, great selectivity and output for an old antique. I would have one of those anyday in place of today's rubbish.

I have restored an Atwater Kent Model 3925 and a few others when working at antique store. I used all original parts. There was a basement filled with old radios hundreds of them for parts also thousands of tubes.

Put a nickel strike coat That’s how they do it , you need an active metal to put a heavy copper coating. Make sure it’s an alkaline Nickel strike

I restored an HW-32A for someone almost 2 years ago. Just like you my first contact on it was S51DX. I liked the rig so much that I have acquired a -12 and a -22A. Now I just need to get my own -32 to complete the set. Fun little radio.

I just got into ham radio and rebuilt an HW-16, but learning CW flustrated me. Now I'm rebuilding a pair of HW-101s for my dad and I. It's been a learning experience. The VFO can be slipped in and out without removing the faceplate, barely. Also those VFO trimmers end up loose and there is a service bulletin about it. There's 2 56pg NP0 caps hooked to the tuner cap in parallel. replace one of them with a 46pf and the tuner screws should tighten down enough to hold still. I worked on the VFO for 2-3 days hooked to a power supply before it went back in the radio, wasn't doing it twice.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think anyone would put a five speed behind a 6 . Everyone seems to want tons of horse power. I have a Falcon like your Mustang and I will some day put a five speed behind it.
