Thanks for keeping in sharing those beautiful scenes! 😃 I took a lot of inspiration from your allotment and I'm trying to establish my own flowering patch since a couple of seasons. It's a bit hard here in Spain with the heat, summer drought, clay soil and unstopabble weed growth, but I just need to stablish the right plants in the right time. Cheers!
@MyWildlifeAllotment Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment and nice you get some inspiration from my plot. We are currently in the middle of the worst drought we ever had here as well, probably not as bad as in Spain but bad enough. I have given up watering most of the flowers, they just need to survive on their own now or die, I just water the trees and vegetables now. Anything that dies gives me the opportunity to plant something else which is more resilient and drought resistant such as many of the small Mediterranean shrubs such as Cistus. I hope all is going well with your garden and that it survives the drought.

@@MyWildlifeAllotment Indeed, there isn't any rain since the end of spring and the thermomether is over 30ºC every single day since the beginning of june without exception. As you say, sometimes it's better to let the nature make its own and observe which species are tough enough. The results often seem illogical: some annuals such as Calendula can thrive and reseed with very little water, but supposedly drought-resistant bushes like Lavandula or Polygala are quite stressed. On the other hand, bushes such as Vitex or Gaura look gorgeous and flowering in high heat and no water. Also, I spend all the year round collecting wildflower seeds in order to stablish some local plants which are proven to be both adapted and liked by the local fauna. In the end, it requires a lot of patience and learning but I'm sure that I will find the way.

Thank you, glad you like my allotment :-). You can see my allotment on the TV screen soon, in the new channel More4 program 'Garden of the Year' which starts on Monday next week (22/8), my allotment will feature in episode 3 on Wednesday, 9pm. It still looked nice and green then as they filmed at the end of June, now the allotment is a lot more brown and yellow with the drought but there are still some nice flowers which have survived so far.

Thanks for the vid. inspirational and informative. I'd add yarrows, candy tuft, zinnias, lobelia, sweet alyssum, single-flowering French marigolds, echinacea, and daisies to the mix, but that's just me. We've also had great success with lupine and snapdragon. Oh. And dill and cilantro. I let all my dill go to seed every year. And whether I want it or not, about half of my cilantro bolts during the summer heat. Bees love them both.

Sorry I'm so late 'coming to the party' but I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making this video. Although I do feel that I'm 'doing my bit' for Nature in helping out the willing destruction of our pollinators, I do wish to do more. I don't have an allotment as I'm disabled, but I do have wild areas of my garden. (My wife keep on at me to "get rid of those weeds", but to me, those "weeds" aren't really weeds, they're simply plants that aren't normally associated with 'modern day' gardens.) I have to get my brother to get me into the garden in my wheelchair in order for me to photograph what I'm seeing there, and I'm always amazed at what I find. By the way, you've just got yourself a new subscriber. 😉
@MyWildlifeAllotment2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your comment. It is nice you try to do your bit for pollinators as well. I have a lot of wildflowers on my allotment which other people who like more conventional gardens would call weeds, but as long as I like them they can stay and most are great for pollinators as you discovered as well. I will try to make more videos this year as soon as the gardening year gets going. I have not seen many solitary bees so far this year but have seen plenty of bumblebees (mostly queens) which is nice. They seem to like my apricot tree which is in full flower at the moment.

Thank you for your comment and great you find the video of my allotment useful. Start with lots of annual flowers at the beginning and over the years you can plant more perennial plants which will be easier as you don`t have to sow them every year.

Hi, I adore your allotment, do you plant veg amongst your flowers or do you have a separate veg area- would love to see how the 2 work together xx
@MyWildlifeAllotment2 жыл бұрын
Thank you :-) I do have separate veg areas, I don`t mix flowers with veg as I don`t think it works well. The separate veg areas are all quite small and in between the flower areas which keep them more sheltered and also more hidden from pigeons etc. Also the flower areas don`t get any additional compost or fertilizer while the veg areas get a covering of home-made compost every year as well as chicken pellets. So far it works well and I don`t seem to have many pest issues. I harvest around 200-300kg of fruit and veg every year.
