Seed heads and grasses - My Wildlife Allotment in November 2021

The allotment is looking very autumnal now, but seed heads and grasses are still looking good. There are also a few last flowers and some nice autumn colour such as the Asian pear tree. I will leave most grasses and seed heads standing through winter as they provide food for birds and shelter for many insects and other wildlife. On frosty days the allotment looks now especially beautiful.

Thank you very much and glad you like it :-) This is the best time of year to appreciate all the seed heads and grasses. I will not cut back until late winter so the allotment will not look bare and empty for a long time. Also from February the spring bulbs start flowering so there is something else to look forward too.

Hi, I adore your allotment, do you plant veg amongst your flowers or do you have a separate veg area- would love to see how the 2 work together xx

Thank you :-) I do have separate veg areas, I don`t mix flowers with veg as I don`t think it works well. The separate veg areas are all quite small and in between the flower areas which keep them more sheltered and also more hidden from pigeons etc. Also the flower areas don`t get any additional compost or fertilizer while the veg areas get a covering of home-made compost every year as well as chicken pellets. So far it works well and I don`t seem to have many pest issues. I harvest around 200-300kg of fruit and veg every year.
