Is it just me, or does the Q knob not react properly when trying to adjust it?

How have I just now found this absolute treasure - both the channel and Dan Worrall? I have never seen such a skilled, visual, and "tactile" education of how some of these audio techniques actually work. Other pros just keep throwing around all the same pro terms, spinning knobs and clicking buttons that I cannot hear one bit with my old, untrained ears and haven't made me an ounce better in my self-paced world. The details that Dan chooses to explain are so expertly chosen, like knowing to focus on the peak meters and how they can be deceiving. He has a way of zooming right into the biggest question marks that come up and leave me scratching my head on why I seem stuck at the same quality level, with any changes I make just getting worse. I'm an engineer by trade, so maybe that's why a lot of these quantitative and/or mathematical explanations help me infinitely more than "warmth" and "presence". But these are absolute gems, and I wish I found them 3-4 years ago when I started dabbling with all this mixing and production stuff.

The problem with LUFS (although it's the best we have currently) is that it doesn't include width. Width plays a huge role in perceived loudness

I used to hate physics lessons at school, I simply didn't understand them, though when Dan is teaching, I enjoy them considerably more. Still don't understand a damn thing, though I'm sure if I watch this video a few times, I will have at least have spent more time trying to get my head around the principals than I ever did at school, even though I probably wont understand any of it.

Pro-Q 4 introduces significant latency and delay issues, especially in Spectral mode, making it almost unusable in real-time mixing or tracking scenarios. Even outside Spectral mode, delays are noticeable and disrupt workflow. The increased CPU usage further slows down performance, forcing many users (myself included) to revert to Pro-Q 3. However, I found a solution: if you disable and then enable the plugin, it can fix the issue temporarily. (win10 - Studio One 7)

If there is a secret to maximum loudness for me, it is to NOT USE it. It’s so easy in the current swamp of pointless pop to use volume like a weapon and never stop shooting. Max volume is a gift, a tool for drama. Save it for the moment it means something to the piece, to the lyric. I have to confess I learned this a bit too late for some of my early records. A breathy, whispering lyric delivered at -0.5dB ref PK feels as silly as it sounds. I call that engineer music. Attention is paid when we speak softly, so if you need attention, get away from volume. There will usually be a place for it in nearly every piece, but the rarer it is, the more fascinated attention will be paid it. Listen to Peter Gabriel’s solo material for a masterclass in loudness use. You’ll find yourself leaning in, maybe even asking “what?” That should be the goal with lyrical music.

I would have enjoyed this a lot more if it wasn't oriented towards the modern, lifeless, electronic music scene. Music now has all these gimmicks used to get attention from people. It's so tacky. Why are there so many people trying to create noise instead of recording a beautiful instrument played by a talented musician???

What's really missing for me is the ability to choose Pre- or Post-EQ for the saturation! As it stands, the saturation is very clearly post-EQ, which means it is sometimes working against the EQ move you may have just made. For instance, you hi-pass a signal at 110 Hz, add the Warm saturation setting, and you get all this build-up of very low frequency gunk... that you just purposely got rid of in the first place. The Subtle setting adds a lot of high frequencies, btw. Granted, these are fairly low level signals; but if you follow the FabFilter stance that you can add this plug-in across numerous tracks as a channel EQ, then of course it can build up. It needs to be either fixed as pre-EQ or switchable at the very least. Too bad, because I think the new saturation is decent-sounding on its own, although subtle.

Love this plugin and thanks for the great tutorial! Having an issue with Pro Tools Ultimate 2024.10.1 though where, when the automation snaps back to flat AND Spectral Mode turns off, it causes a little skip in playback of the session, even when the track with Q4 active is not actually playing anything, ie, the clip is finished and the plugin automation snaps back to default. No skip at all if the bands are in normal Dynamic Mode, only when Spectral turns off. I tried to post this on the Fab Filter User Forum but got the "Error: Forbidden" message. Thanks in advance!

Tbh this technique is 1) overrated (properly setting up your compressors attack/release/ratio can accomplish 90% of what this technique can achieve) 2) pretty much impossible to implement without audible artifacts, unless you force linear phase mode AND add even more latency on top of that for proper lookahead transient detection SplitEQ, for example, degrades sound quality pretty bad.
