Someone's gonna need back surgery from carrying a railroad. Guy fixes the tracks, fixes the trains, serves the cocoa, and eats diabolical amounts of food from Chili's. Good to see the man himself in his natural habitat - a pity that it's not pretty...

I think it's cool that some of that rail is over a century old and still doing the job, albeit with skilled repairs from dedicated people like yourself. Great shots at the end of the Express and the North Pole...beautiful stuff, my friend!🎄

Likewise, it continues to blow me away. Then again, there’s no saying whether any one piece was there since 1903, or was manufactured in 1900, before sitting in a shed for 90 years and replacing a broken piece in 2003 or something. We are reaching a point, though, that the museum really needs to consider replacing the rail. As good of shape as it’s still in, it only has so much life left. An upgrade to even 100lb for the main line would drastically increase lifespan and ease maintenance. Alas, we’ll see what management comes to decide, and I’ll keep swinging the hammer for the time being. Best wishes amigo, and a Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Great tutorial on basic maintenance of (truly vintage) trackwork that is no longer being utilized as originally designed and built! Hope you can more often than not have an assistant(s) when out on the line as always safer than solo but know how short handed museum/tourist operations usually are! Maybe will see some of your FRRM people (if not you!) at the RPCA Convention next month? In any event Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
@kotabeaner12 күн бұрын
Absolutely my friend, I greatly appreciate that. If ever we’re actually replacing ties or doing a heavy job, there’s usually two or three of us on the track at once. This though, was pretty light work (for me at least) that didn’t take terribly long, and if this work wasn’t necessary, I’d have just been running the track end to end for inspection to check it off for the week. There just happened to be these couple things I found that needed quick correction. Actually didn’t have any other problems with or within the track for the rest of the season after this. What are the dates/location(s) of the RPCA deal? I might see if I can make a trip just for the sake.

@Buckskin1290Ай бұрын
Not all, Bnsf is doing things with their Mac’s, up is slowly rebuilding their dash 9s, Ns too and same with cn, Csx doesn’t care except for the Mac’s like their dash 9s could easily be rebuilt :( Bnsf only rebuilt 20 and has no plans at this time, up sd70ms are returning to life, bnsf B40-8Ws that are switching are still around and will be around for another decade or 2, Up is rebuilding their AC44s and AC60s which is kinda cool to see, CN is also rebuilding their SD60Is which is nice to see. So we still get to see old stuff but it’s slowly getting rebuilt. Csx it’s the worst class 1 almost.

That sounds about right. That was the general story behind the 2020 scare. They all seemed to jump back out when CSX ran “short on power”. I don’t imagine they’ll face a similar dilemma anytime soon.

I'm really going to miss the old CSX power i used to see last year when CSX reactivated the Dash 8s just to put them back into storage
@IsupportVehicles999Ай бұрын
They were reactived back in 2020, then the dash 9s in 2021, and eventually in the end of 2023 they put them and the dash 9s into storage again because of the flared Mac rebuilds! I’m glad I got a dash 8 in November due to power shortage again, so that tells u, you should not throw all old power for waste all at once because old can still be useful until it breaks or unless they get stored to be rebuilt.
