Awesome videos Grant. You’ve assisted me immensely in building a sliding gate. I’m wondering how many footings on a 6m concrete section on a sliding gate? How deep should the footings go in reactive soil? Thanks.

As cheap as solar panels are, I suggest upgrading solar panel and battery at time of purchase. . Why go with 10 watt solar panel and 14 ah agm type battery (7 ah available) when you can go to 50 watt and 20 ah lithium. Which can utilize close to 100% of it's capacity. The solar panel can keep up with charging while the battery can carry load for long periods week no sun. And if you add accessories that draw power, the battery setup will already be big enough.

Thank you for your feed back. This video was made before solar panel prices are as cheap as they are today. We do normally use 40Watt solar panels and a 14Ah AGM battery. The 14Ah is available so long as it isn't drawn more than 30% on a regular bases then is will last almost as long as a Lithium Battery for 1/3rd the price. Lithium batteries can be drawn down to 80% capacity on a regular basis without shortening their lifespan and are much lighter, which make them ideal for electric cars but for gates, weight isn't so much of a concern, where as price is.

I would like to thank the author of the video for the inspiring content :) I am a design engineer and work in the field of designing double-leaf gates. After watching your video, three clients have already contacted me with design requests! They wanted to build themselves a multi-section folding gate which they saw in your video))). I developed my own mechanisms for implementing double-leaf gates. But I haven’t encountered 3 doors yet. I want to share my experience in this area. The cable system did not seem very reliable to me, so I replaced the cables with chains. This way I eliminated the slippage, but the chains also have an important drawback. The chains are stretching(((( So the gate opened correctly only 1-2 times. After which the chains needed to be tightened. The tension mechanism did not help either. As a result, I developed my own lever mechanism to implement this idea. If you are interested in how I did it , watch this video - here is an example of a finished working gate with 3 sections on each side! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGOWdaymaJl7aac . here you can see what mechanism I used kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2OXm3ijbbF_q5Y Thank you. Liked it, wrote a comment and subscribed to your channel!

Thank you for you interesting feedback. The lever system seems to be the favorite with most manufacturers, although only for two panels, not seen one used with three panels before. We now use a mechanism with a small rack and pinion for two panels per side, generally avoid more than 2 panels, good in theory but not so good in practice.

Where you have the vertical styles (1:55) would adding a diagnol brace within each section significantly strengthen the gate? What if the frame was wooden?
@automaticGatesExplained
@automaticGatesExplained 2 ай бұрын
It certainly would. If its wooden the braces should be in compression not tension.

If you haven't added verticals stiles and/or horizontal rails to brace the gate you can add a wire across the diagonal with a turn buckle to adjust tension.

Question for you... I am about to pour a driveway and then install a sliding gate. The driveway will have a bit of a pitch to is toward the street naturally. My question is "what about the track, does it have to be on level surface and that level surface match the other level surface in the form of the footer run for the gate travel behind the fence when it opens?"
@automaticGatesExplained

If you watch the video to the end you will have had you answer at 9:38, although since making this video we now use an aluminium gate track with a profile that can handle slope from the direction of the road better because it allows the wheel to be on more of an angle, see www.grantsautomation.com.au/index.php?quote=299 for a picture of the profile.

We custom design and make the mounts for hinges on uphill gates to suit the gate, posts, slope and opening angle.

This guy has done real installs for more than 20 years, did the hard yards on the tools, ended up specializing in the more difficult gates such as Telescopic gates on a slope and now designs these for a living and now has sons that do the installations. Animation is used because it shows concepts better than can be done with live video. You are a little quick to judge my friend.

Which type of metal do you recommend for the track Aluminum or Galvanized steel? I see both and I trying to choose for a tropical environment.
@automaticGatesExplained
@automaticGatesExplained 4 ай бұрын
We normally use Aluminium track because it looks nicer, has no holes pre-drilled so you can drill holes where you want and doesn't rust. Galvanized steel normally has holes pre-drilled in it that quite often end up right on a crack in a driveway and if you cut or drill it, which you normally need to do it can rust. It also looks more industrial.

How can a low volt motor offer high torque and high speed at the same time? I thought it was one or the other?
@automaticGatesExplained
@automaticGatesExplained 4 ай бұрын
You are correct the more speed the less torque with low voltage DC motors, although overall torque, speed and efficiency of a low voltage DC motor is much better than a single phase AC motor with the same power.
@jeremymagz
@jeremymagz 4 ай бұрын
@@automaticGatesExplained thank you for the quick response. So as an example, if you have a 300 watt 240v ac motor wouldn’t it draw less amps than a 24v motor with 300 watt rating? Making the high volt option more cost efficient by reducing conductor size?
@automaticGatesExplained
@automaticGatesExplained 4 ай бұрын
An AC motor draws more electrical power than a 24VDC Motor to provide the same amount of mechanical power output because single phase AC motors are only about 30% efficient, where as 24VDC permanent magnet motors are 70% to 90% efficient. 24VDC motors normally have a built in transformer to go from 240VAC to 24VDC so power cable size to the gate will be the same, because it is determined be electrical regulations. If running low voltage power cable to the motor from a house this will require basically the same size cable up to a certain distance and a thicker cable for longer distances because there is a greater voltage drop.

Hopefully you are responsive to incoming questions.... I have watched your sliding gate discussion(s) extensively and I appreciate what you have done with this. I am getting close to putting conduit in the ground and staged for a soon to be poured driveway and sliding gate motor pad and gate track footer. In this video and at least one other, I noticed you showed TWO dedicated conduits for each of the hot and neutral wires. Why two and do you feel like that is absolutely necessary?
@automaticGatesExplained
@automaticGatesExplained 4 ай бұрын
Two conduits are only necessary if you have control or intercom cables run back to the house, the power need only be in one conduit and other cables in a separate conduit so there is no interference on the control/intercom cables form the power.

@@automaticGatesExplained Thanks for the prompt response. All understood. For these current model motors that have a couple of wireless switch bobs included and also the ability to be operated by an app on a cell phone, do you think running control lines is a strong consideration? I also have an interest in powering a CCTV camera at the gate area. Do you think it would be easy enough to use the power line out to the motor for additional devices? What's your thoughts on that?
@automaticGatesExplained
@automaticGatesExplained 4 ай бұрын
It's always a good idea to run a conduit with a draw wire in case you want to add cables for cameras, intercoms etc... wireless outside isn't always reliable nor easy to get working. Camera's and Intercoms can normally be powered from the gate motors accessories output. We will be making more videos soon on this sort of thing.

Hi Grant great video, starting to plan installing a 5m sliding gate. at the moment to get our caravan out i remove a fence panel and a removable gate pos with its gate. doing this clears enough space to get the van out. as the van moves it travels over lawn with one wheel and the other is on the driveway. but to my question .... the sliding gate itself looks to need a deep bottom rail so that the rack etc can attach. are these available in styles commonly used in these 19mm rod type gate panels ( sorry having trouble describing the type of thing)
