Unless the MFJ has been set to bypass (hold down tune for 0.5 sec - one beep conformation), the tuner is still in series with the coax (even if it's off - latching relays). To operate without the MFJ tuner, you have to put it in bypass and turn it off. Then the radio will use it's own tuner and the MFJ won't be seen as part of the antenna load.

Neat. I tried the 10W level and then 30W and 50W. AT 10W the SWR was low...it increased as the power setting was set higher. The antenna, a dipole, is pretty well flat at 14.074, which is good because I've been using FT8 a lot. Looks like I have a problem because at the 50W level it rose to about 2.75.

If you short [MIC] pins 3 and pins 6 it means "Freq Up" and shorted through a 470-ohm it means "Freq Down". Just measure the pins on the mic with an ohmmeter while you push the freq up/dn buttons to verify. I wonder what other magical voltage divider values might exist in firmware. Its probably just an ADC reading the voltage and deciding what to do in firmware. Also, might be able to add LEDs from 8V->2.2kOhm -> [4:squelch] and also 8V->2.2 kOhm -> [5:PTT] to light up during PTT or when receive happens. Just stay below 10mA on the 8V line. Be careful not to ground the [5:PTT] line directly, it may trigger transmit like [3:ACC] does, but I've not tested.

7100 RT Sys question... How do i program a repeater tone AND a Rx Tone... Programming a tone - i understand & works,. but if i want a Rx tone do I enter a SQ tone, but then the Tx tone gets grayed out.. What am i missing. Is the 7100 not able to have both a RX & Different Tx tone ? Or am i in the wrong Column ? What am I missing ?
@HamRadioA2Z12 күн бұрын
Hi. If you need to have separate RX and TX tones, you need to change the Offset Direction. Instead of + or - DUP, you need to select SPLIT. Then you enter the TX and RX frequencies separately. All of the Tone columns will grey out. Further to the right there is another set of Split Tone columns with Tone Mode, CTCSS and Rx CTCSS.

Excellent explanation ! It's cleared things up in my mind as I have an swr meter in my manual tuner after my radio and a seperate power/SWR meter after my tuner. I tune my manual tuner to minimim swr but my SWR power meter AFTER my tuner reads a bit higher. Its my antenna that needs a tweak to lower the swr as its reading the true swr in the transmission line. Thank you!

@HamRadioA2ZАй бұрын
In a recent firmware update, Icom allows you to change the default function of the multi-knob when the menu isn’t showing. It used to always be tuning in kHz. You have set the default function to Compressor level. If you turn the multi-knob without pressing it first, the COMP will change to a small display showing your compression level. If you press and hold the multi-knob, it will change back to kHz.

why does the receive meter stop working when AGC is turned off? Is there a way to have the receive meter work with AGC off?
@HamRadioA2ZАй бұрын
I don’t believe so. The receive S-meter basically works by showing you the inverse of what the AGC is doing. The stronger the signal, the more the AGC turns the gain down. So the meter is driven from the AGC signal. If AGC is off, there is nothing to drive the meter.

I am/was interested in this radio, but after visiting the Icom web support site, it is not even shown, accessible only by search. The last firmware update was three years ago. To me, it sounds like Icom has abandoned this radio.?
@HamRadioA2ZАй бұрын
On the Icom support site, you have to search for any radio that you are looking for support for. The latest firmware I see is version 1.32 released in December of 2022. So a little newer than 3 years ago. I don’t see anything that makes me believe they are abandoning the radio. All of the major dealers are still advertising and selling them.

A little late to the party but couple questions : does that black rtv come off the plastic very easily? and what ram mount are you using ? Does the transceiver cause any issue with the satellite radio ? I think this would be a good mobile for my titan.
@HamRadioA2ZАй бұрын
Hi. Sorry for the delayed reply. I have not tried to remove this RTV yet. I have used RTV in a similar way on past mobile mounts and it has cleaned up pretty well when I take them out. I don’t remember the exact RAM model (not near the truck at the moment). It’s the ball mount with the shortest arm and just a 1” ball with a 1/4-20 threaded stud. No interference issues with satellite radio, but if I transmit on 40 meters, my automatic running boards go in and out. 😂

So, fun story. We got rid of cable TV a long time ago and now use a gang of outdoor antennas, going through an active head end (programmable active filter, amplifier). We record shows with our DVR which is how we discovered that at times, certain channels (VHF) were getting obliterated. I discovered the source of this problem and many will not believe it! It turned out to be the new Waterpik we bought! The old one never did this, but I quickly realized why this one did. The old one used a brushless motor and the new one now uses a cheap, 120V AC brushed motor.... AND NO FILTERING AT ALL! I too tried the usual adding ferrite chokes, but to no real avail. Only minor. What I ended up having to do to solve this was a multi-step process. I had to add a dual layer foil wrap around the motor (with an airspace between them), 2 coils on both live and neutral, several HV Ceramic capacitors (AC) and finally, change the power cord from the 2 wire to 3 wire. That helped a lot. But still, not 100%. Finally, the resolution was to build a small isolation transformer with suppression circuitry on input and output. LOL I also added extra shielding. That worked! All this for a stupid Waterpik to keep our teeth clean. LOL
@HamRadioA2ZАй бұрын
Thanks for the info and the great story. More & more, modern electronics seem to have crap for filtering. I suspect many new items don’t meet the FCC EMI requirements and figure forgiveness is cheaper than testing if the manufacturer ever gets called out on it.
