Nice review Thomas! How do you like the Davis unit so far? ? ? ? ? ❓
@thomaskerrigan3244Ай бұрын
no issues, but I haven't completed a spreadsheet with comparative readings, but no crazy readings like the tempest. Bad news is that if you want to keep your data forever you need to run a seperate server or logging software. The new receiver doesn't allow you to load all the data on an external card which is a bummer.

Thx for the video, I am looking for a newer weather station, but sm not so sure after watching this….

I think it’s a terrible weather station. The radiation shield is poor so it reads warmer than it is on sunny days. The lack of dew point on the app is bad. The forecasts are false. And yes the rainfall gauge is terrible. Davis is the way to go!!!

Glad you enjoyed it. It was a blast to research and shoot. Lots of architectural sources cite that reason for bridges being covered. That tidbit specifically came out of the covered bridge manual published by the US department of Transportation highways.dot.gov/media/6696

I'm on my second Tempest and am still having accuracy problems with rain fall and also windspeed on my second unit. Most recently, my manual rain guage showed I got 1.1 in. of rain, while my tempest was adjusted down to 0.59 in. of rain after it had registered around 2.0 in. of rain during the storm. This behavior is fairly common and discouraging when I'm intested in the rainfall in my yard, not what someone else got away from my yard. I also recently experienced wind velocity on the Tempest at 49mph when in reality I'd say wind was a maximum of 15mph. Like the idea of no moving parts, but am not impressed with the lack of accuracy.

I purchased a Weatherflow Tempest and have it integrated with my local HomeAssistant instance via MQTT. I like the all in one unit and the idea of the sonic sensor and no moving parts. Unfortunately, I have found the unit not to be reliable. I have had to have my unit replaced three times due to failing sensors (usually pressure, and wind speed/direction but sometimes light UV among others). Tempest customer support is excellent and they quickly diagnosed issues and sent out replacement units to get me back up and running quickly. However, the 2 year warranty window has expired so they will not send out any more replacements but I can order a new unit for 50% off the retail price. My last free replacement unit has failed wind sensors now and I am struggling to pull the trigger for paying for another unit at 50% off that will just fail again. I'm currently trying to decide if I want to pay even more for a Davis or Ambient Weather station. Not sure I need absolutely accurate rain measurement values, but something that is durable given it is designed to live outside would be nice.

I am exactly in the same boat. In fact I had to double check to make sure I hadn't written this comment. I'm on the fence as to whether I want to pay several hundred dollars for a Davis and have to replace batteries every couple of years or just $150 and hope this one actually lasts 10+ years.

Thanks for the honest review. Im tired of soldering and fixing my acurite 5 in 1. And was on the fence with davis looking at Tempest and wanting to have a dedicated pi screen. Will cost as much as vantage pro kit. And i was always skeptical of the rain and that's most important as my irrigation controller Waters based on rainfall at my house.

I remedied the Haptic rain sensor rain measurement being off by using Weather Display software . Weather Display allows you to calibrate the rain sensor measurements to within a few hundreds of an inch . . As saying, with the weather Display calibration my Tempest now measures rain very accurately . I also have a Davis Vantage Vue station which I use to help in calibrating my Tempest . The Vantage Vue is mounted within 40 feet of the Tempest mount . It took awhile tinkering with the calibration to where it now measures rainfall within a few hundreds of an inch of the Vantage Vue rainfall measurement . I am very happy 5 ***** rating for the Tempest weather station . As for the Vantage Vue the anemometer bearing need replaced as 12 yrs wear has it to not measure wind accurately . I say that you can't go wrong with the Tempest when using the Weather Display software .

What are you using the rain data for that it needs to be accurate? I am really curious. I have mine connected to my Rachio irrigation controller and it is accurate enough to allow the Rachio to may decisions on cancelling irrigation runs due to rain fall.
@thomaskerrigan32449 ай бұрын
Nothing requires my rain data to be accurate but my expectations. My thoughts are if your data isn’t accurate, you may as well not even bother recording it. And since I enjoy looking back on data and comparing to previous months or years, having extremely erroneous rainfall readings bothered me. I always default to my CoCoRaHS gauge for the most accurate measurements, but my new Davis has done much better.

I’m curious if you have done a side to side comparison of the Tempest to your new Davis station. I’m looking to upgrade my Vantage Vue and I like the added features of lightning detection and UV without the added cost of Davis. I like the simplicity of the Tempest to your phone where the Davis system seems old school. I take manual obs with a rain gauge also and find the Vantage Vue isn’t too bad. It’s also on the roof so I expect a small difference in quality. Thanks for the great video!

I had two of them in Texas. Full sun all day long for about two and a half years in two separate locations. Then, the batteries started failing to hold a charge from the solar panels on both units. WeatherFlow said the units are out of warranty and that the batteries are not user replaceable. They did not offer me any discounted price on new units. Looking for other options. Thanks for the advice and review.

This is the review from anyone having anything with batteries. And the government in the USA and EU is pushing EVs like we aren't going to have to spend our life savings and retirements on all the battery repairs and replacements. My Stihl home gear is all suffering from battery issues and those batteries are hundreds of dollars a piece. My All-Clad battery kitchen mixer failed over and over again with replacements from the company until I just trashed it. Battery powered items are low tech.. In other words, the biggest computer company in the world, Apple, can't get battery technology right... everyone else will be less capable than Apple. Battery powered items will fail and they will fail quickly.

@@bertraminc9412A battery is not a battery is not a battery, but all batteries experience aging and that can be accelerated or reduced based on how you take care of it. Never run a battery to 0% if you want to use it again. Don’t leave it below ~30% for long periods. Avoid keeping it at 95-100% for long periods. Thankfully the vast majority of batteries in consumer products are relatively easy to replace if the product isn’t glued together. LiPo cells are most common and pretty easy. More advanced cells (e.g. the ones in an iPhone) are going to be harder to do without manufacturer support unfortunately. There are new laws requiring manufacturers to allow end users to repair/replace parts that are helping with that, but it’s not a magic bullet. As for EVs, the batteries that the good ones use are much more robust and capable of being charged and discharged (cycled) thousands of times while still maintaining good capacity. The software (BMS) and a little consideration from the owner does the rest.

Tempest in their current form are complete junk. After only 3 years I'm throwing that $300+ in the garbage solely because it's ONLY powered by solar, with NO other way to charge it. After only 3 years the solar panel no longer produces enough charge unless the sun is shining, making this station worthless in overcast and nighttime. Agree the rain sensor is horrible. Going with the Ambient Weather WS-5000 now

Living on the outskirts of Mojave Desert in SoCal I've been on the fence on which unit to purchase. Rain, wind, and temp accuracy IS important to me and you mentioning your choice being the Davis, I'm leaning in that direction as well. Thanks!

The band seem to have scottish dress not irish.
@ivanoday463510 ай бұрын
Most pipe bands, in Ireland as elsewhere, wear Scottish or Scottish-looking garb. It doesn't mean they're Scottish; it's just the way pipe bands dress. The plain orange kilts the Irish Army wears - in order not to look Scottish, I suppose - are hideous and stupid. Scotland is the Holy Land of piping, True North, even though the piping tradition in Ireland might actually be older. I don't know if anyone knows for sure (there are lots of arguments about it), but the vast repertoire and piping culture in Scotland dwarf their Irish counterparts. (Cautionary note: I'm only talking about the Highland Pipes, not the Uilleann Pipes native to Ireland which featured so prominently in the movie, Braveheart.) Irish pipers, competitive ones anyway, devote their lives to playing "Scottish" tunes in Scottish societies for Scottish prizes too sacred to say out loud until you're holding them in your hand. And the same goes for everyone else. Scotland is Mecca. The snowy City on a Hill. God is there in Glasgow every summer, and He is unforgiving. It's worth noting however that for the last two years Irish bands have won the World's. Anyway, that's why you see the clothes you see. The Irish have their own traditions, of course, with Emerald Societies in every city. Fire brigades, police, and military. Parades, weddings and funerals. Even colleges - the University of Chicago has its own pipe band and a tartan registered in Edinburgh! But when it comes to the music (and there may actually be many times more "Irish" pipers in the world than "Scottish"), the Irish have no choice but to fall in behind their Gaelic first cousins and try to keep up.

Hey Tom, I’m over in North Abington. Great video! For what it is, I’ve enjoyed mine. It has been my first experience with a weather station and a Davis wasn’t in the cards, $$$ wise. My Barometric pressure sensor went in mine, Tempest sent me another one at no cost and extremely quick so I can’t be unhappy about the customer service. I will agree with the rain sensor. It gives you an idea. Hard to beat an actual gauge. Take care!

Nice review and thankful for comparisons to other data sources (at least for rainfall). I've seen many reviews claiming how accurate the Tempest is but without any comparative evidence. I also suspect that many Tempest users have the the WF 'Raincast' enabled where the Tempest apps reports rain data for the "neighborhood scale" not your individual Tempest. I found this "RC" to be fairly accurate, often suspiciously identical to the rain data from my co-located AW WS-2902 (which tracks fairly well with my co-located Stratus rain gauge). With this RC enabled, it often leaves a telltale sign on the WxUg charts where there is "negative" rainfall periods during the data (ie, rainfall graph being non-monotonic). Like others, I've had 2 Tempest fail in 28 months and I decided to not move forward with a third.

This is genuinely good, so I want to critique the heck out of it. - Scripting could be a little tighter (you said "the last thing you're probably going to do," but you meant "the last thing you would probably do"; "built-in safety feature built" is awkward; you handled the minor flub "triving--trying" like a pro, but things like that would be worth a re-take if you aim to make more polished, edited content for a broad audience in the future) - Background audio could be a bit quieter; your voice is more important than the crickets and music - When first panning across the grooves, it looked like they were parallel with the runway, because they were running "down camera"; showing them horizontal on the screen and panning in the direction of the expected movement of the plane would communicate the physicality of the idea more clearly - When you showed the NASA "Safety Grooving" quote, the top of the top line was cut off, and the highlight did not cover the full height of the letters; the highlight could also have come a split second sooner, so that the audience isn't left struggling to parse an entire paragraph for a moment while you're still speaking If this format was a one-time school project and not a thing you want to do a lot of, then I recommend that you ignore me and go be happy. But if you really enjoy making stuff like this, please take to heart that you have a real shot at becoming a legend. The cinematography is solid, the content is interesting, the presentation is professional, and the vibe is just right.

I have a Tempest as well, and the rainfall readings have been quite inaccurate compared to the tipping-bucket rain gauge on my Ambient Weather WS-5000 station. However, I think the Tempest’s haptic rain gauge does a really good job at detecting rainfall onset and when that rainfall ends. Tipping-bucket rain gauges have an onset delay because that bucket has to fill up first before it tips over and registers as rainfall.

I’ve been researching the PWS market and am considering the WS-5000 and the Tempest. Frankly I’m put off by the non replaceable battery in the Tempest. OTOH, the WS-5000 solar panels don’t charge the batteries so they have to be routinely replaced. I know my planned site will be a compromise with my 2 story house about 25 feet away and tall trees about the same. I plan to mount on a fence post in my backyard which is on the north side of the house. While the WS-5000 sounds like the better device, I hear support sucks in comparison to Tempest. I don’t know what to think. Guess I’ll just keep researching. The Davis system is more expensive than I care to spend (maybe $500 max).

Loved my Tempest, But after replacement number 3 broke down due to sensor failure, I gave up on them. So 3 units broke in 3 years...this is absurd.
@cpufrost Жыл бұрын
I've had 7 of them, 3 of those were barometer failures. They claim the one they sent me (as of July 2023) has a new "improved" design with less internal connections. But the wind and rain measurements are completely inaccurate and cannot be trusted. Ultrasonic sensor technology has limits and there are research grade sensors that can provide accurate readings but you're looking at 10X the price just for the sensor too!
@markcarlson1696 Жыл бұрын
My experience was the same. Had it for 3 years and liked it. Didnt trust the rain values and tried recalibration but was never satisfied. 3 Years in the battery failed. Replaced the battery by soldering a new one but couldn't get it working. Battery failures are very frequent with this unit after searching online for how to replace the battery. My latest station is an an ambient WS2000 which I love so far. My wind gauge did stop working in the snow though which made we wish for the WS5000 which is similar to the tempest for wind measurements.
